There's an article about Charlie's exit on THR

The studio is reeling over Hunnam's exit less than three weeks before the start of production. Sources say his discomfort with the hoopla around the project had been mounting for at least four weeks before he bailed, which officially was blamed on his Sons schedule not allowing him time to prepare (the FX series wraps production Oct. 21).

In addition, Hunnam, who also is a writer (he penned the gothic horror screenplay Vlad for Brad Pitt's Plan B and Summit Entertainment), is said to have submitted his own very detailed script notes on Kelly Marcel's adaptation of the runaway best-seller. The notes were well received, according to sources, but that only led to Hunnam seeking further script approval, which was denied. "That's Charlie, that's who he is. He's particular," says one source.

According to another source, Hunnam, who was to be paid about $125,000 for the film, began butting heads with the creative team, including Taylor-Johnson. The conflict reached a fever pitch in early October, though everyone involved thought the issues had been resolved.

Only 125K? Really? that is surprising to me. I would definitely see what it didn't matter to walk away from that. They'll end up paying three times that in security to protect whoever they rope in from crazy fans...

^^Yeah it's not a lot. I think he almost gets as much on SoA.
So this can definitely not be the reason why he signed on in the first place. They must've had a better selling strategy then. Or he had an annoying agent.

I'm really surprised by the low amount he was to be paid. By Hollywood standards that's pretty low. By comparison (a dubious one I know given that 50 Shades of Poop started off as a Twilight fanfic) but a much less experienced Robert Pattinson was paid $2 million for the first Twilight film, which was basically an indie.

Charlie has much more cred than Robert had then. Anyhow. I agree. At least it made it easier to walk away from the film - more power to him.

This makes sense to me. He thought he would have a bigger hand in the script/story and direction of the film.

I just can't believe that this wasn't ironed out prior to the announcement and hoopla. Actors drop out of projects all the time but this isn't a regular project.

^^Maybe he was given the impression he'd have some creative control but it wasn't actually in his contract. :shrugs: As for his salary, if he was only getting 125K he probably had a back end deal or his agent just sucks.

I was thinking he'd get a percentage and there might have been an attractive deal for any sequel.

I think Ben Foster was paid 1 million to star in Pandorum a small indie movie while Shia of the Beef was paid about $500 000 for the first Transformers movie.

BTW isn't his agent also Michael Fassbender's agent?

I just find the 125K very hard to believe, as much money as the books have made ( and Amazon best seller list again) and as much as the movie stands to make. It seems unlikely.

Still very disappointed he backed out!

Yes, they have the same agent. But Charlie is the one who's been longer with him. I think something like 12 years. Charlie's really loyal and told a cute story about his agent and him in one interview. He's the reason why he switched from WME to CAA. He wanted to keep him.
