The last summer and cruise collection pants had the same extra wide leg pants, and they’re even more high waisted for cruise’s release in November.

I find high waisted trousers tend to be more flattering and even add a bit of leg length if you are petite. Would prefer a side zip or buttons though as it really helps the elegance of the look (my opinion) - many of Chanel designs still use fastenings at the front. If these are 20k in price that’s pretty shocking - what’s so special here - difficult to tell from the photos!

The floral embroidery uses specialty sequins/beads and is entirely done by hand by Le 19M according to what an SA said.

I made a request for this coat. Thanks to @ari I found out the price before I asked the store to contact me when available. I thought it would be a nice coat to wear for hopefully several years to come. But now I doubt if it's worth the price, part of me is trying to justify another part is saying that Chanel has raised its prices and it has nothing to do with the design, material or any other acceptable reason. Had this coat been made a few seasons ago, the price would probably have been much lower than it is today. Or am I wrong? I asked the store about the material and if any special method is used when it was made but got no helpful answer:no:

I am relatively new to Chanel rtw and I sense I am entering the arena at a time when prices are very high relative to other brands. One question I have is that, in days gone by, was that the sense everyone had about Chanel prices ie that they were much higher than other brands and eye watering at time? I’m hoping that in a few years time I’ll look back and think how “reasonable” the prices were in these current times !!

@PassionChanel, prices have risen enormously in the past few years. when I started buying chanel RTW in 2001-2002, a basic navy boucle jacket was 1400 USD and a simple lesage skirt was 875 (I still have many older chanel pieces) Chanel today is also sometimes triple the price of other premier designers. (My chanel SA insists that chanel prices are comparable to brunello prices, but I disagree. IMO, chanel cashmere coats (and the first ski season puffer) we’re relatively warm, the rest, while beautiful, not really. (My experience is with chanel boucle, cashmere, and puffer coats). Don’t forget other designers do beautiful boucle. J. mendel; Valentino; Akris. etc etc.

@Hanash, I vaguely seem to recall years when chanel prices were not all that far from Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Ungaro, Valentino and a few others, but I could be mistaken. Here is a comparison of some 2020-2021 prices among Chanel/Dior/Brunello/Hermes.

5K Chanel t shirt; 6K velvet joggers (this year); 17K puffer coat coco neige; 6-15K boucle jacket; 4300 cashmere cardigan

Dior: 895 Dior t shirt; 2K Dior pants; 4-6K Dior coat; 2800- 4500K jacket; skirts 2-4,500K, There are some expensive fantasy pieces such as last years embroidered back cashmere coat for 17K which no one bought even at sale. this season, fantasy embellished navy lace long skirt with organza flowers 24K.

Brunello: 1100 simple pullover; 1800 most pants; 12K alpaca cashmere winter coat or metallic hooded car length shearling (I bought both at 50% Sale last year but they’re sturdy classic winter staples that actually can withstand rain or snow); 4K summer dresses; 2K tops

Hermes RTW: 1800 pants; 2000 sweater?; 4-5K last years bomber jacket with leather sleeves

I prefer the chanel boutique buy, but you can compare designers and possibly get better deals at department stores. Happy shopping !

Thank you very much for your informative and very helpful answer. I totally agree.. The difference between the prices of Dior, Valentino and a lot of other great brands is huge. I will try to look into other great designers before I make any decisions.

I think it's the embroideries...
@880 @PassionChanel I'm not wealthy enough to buy my entire wardrobe in high end brands, so I tend to buy basics from everyday brands like Jcrew and occasionally Zara (Zara is great for very trendy but short-lived fashion). Some of the House specialties can't be replaced by others/cheaper brands, such as the Birkin, the Bar jackets and the Chanel tweed jackets. I splurge on these and buy basics elsewhere.

I think Karl over the years has made the tweed jackets much more sophisticated and complicated, so I can see how prices inflate. I'm not rich enough to pay $5k for velvet joggers, so I don't even look at them. If I need joggers I can just go to Alo. I guess I'm just very compartmentalized in these things...

I have been wearing Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, Ralph Lauren Collection etc. for years. These clothes are beautifully made. Some of them are just as well made on the inside as they are on the outside. Especially Oscar de la Renta when Mr. de la Renta was still alive. The fabrics and finishings are luxurious. However, in my opinion , nothing compares to some of the Chanel Métiers collections. The Lesage fabrics, embroideries, buttons etc are sublime. This is what Chanel should be all about. Unfortunately, the logo driven, mass produced items generate bigger margins for Chanel.

nothing compares to some of the Chanel Métiers collections.

Have you ever seen Ch Lacroix? I attended his exhibition In Arles, the place where he was born. Each garment there was a masterpiece.

As for Chanel, I remember the period when I would have bought a jacket priced 1800 euro on sale, a dior dress from a Cruise collection was 1200 euro. 1 chanel bag = 2 YSL bags, 2 Chanel bags= 1 Birkin, it was about 12 years ago

Oscar de la renta , Carolina Herrera, Chanel, are just classically beautiful designs ....Oscar is Fabulous like Karl . Claire Danes wore this beautiful dress made by Carolina Herrera that was marvelous and I saw it in person on the window display...it was fantastically beautiful!
It is indeed beautiful. To be fair though, this tweed is a nice "basic" tweed. A lot of Chanel tweeds are designed specifically for Chanel, sometimes by Lesage. My trip to our fabric store here really helped me to appreciate the Chanel tweed designs - they don't exist even among Lesage's regular tweed offerings priced at $200 per yard. The "couture" tweeds in that fabric store was priced at $400/yard, but many Chanel jackets we crave for lately are even more complicated than the couture tweeds I saw.

So on an apples to apples basis, I think Chanel jackets are definitely expensive, but we're also getting something special. Now, the $5k joggers are a different discussion :P

Around 2008-2010, I went from mainly chanel bags to Hermes (I started by buying B/K preloved and other bags from H boutique) bc I was scandalized at chanel retail prices then lol

I remember when Carolina hererra would do outfits in mixed fabric like pleated silk sewn with sequins; a cashmere top with silk collars and cuffs that coordinated with the silk skirts, and a CH clutch of the same silk, designed by CF but manufactured by Judith Leiber. . .

and, before that when Lesage did work for other houses (before they were bought by chanel. Only at Chanel do the prices go up after the brand acquires the company that did the work lol
