I do wear my black bags during the summer but less than at other times of the year. This might change this summer as I recently purchased a white and blue Alexander McQueen scarf and tied it to my black BV last week. It definitely seemed to "lighten up" the bag.

I also think a black bag is appropriate for year round use. I wear a lot of bright colors in the summer but I think a black bag can still complement these types of outfits. Black is a classic that can be worn in any season.
The only black bag I have left is a patent leather clutch which I would only wear in the winter. As far as black bags go, I believe they can look great all year round. I just prefer to wear them in the wintery months, so that I can look forward to changing color. For me, saddle and off white are my prefered colors!
I don't feel 100% great with my black leather bags when the sun is out but sometimes there's no getting out of (I'm not taking my hyper-shiny silver Bal bowling to serious work meeting)

I carry my black bag whenever I'm wearing brighter clothes. Typically, if I wear darker clothes, I like a brighter bag. But it all depends on the outfit and my mood.
I use black bags in the summer, but as several posters mention, I do swing towards the brighter ones that I can only carry during the summer months. However, if it looks good with the outfit, you bet I'll bust out my black hobo!
