Buying expensive handbags superficial or more of a hobby?

Hobby! Expensive hobby!! I love my handbags the same as any man (or woman) loves the things that they collect, be it cars, coins, cameras, artwork, etc. I truly consider myself to be a handbag collector and try very hard to buy a wide variety of designers, styles and colors so that I have a diverse collection. I can obsess over the tiniest detail on a bag, like a buckle or the stitching. Those details are what will draw me to a designer. I may discover a bag I didn't know about because it's the new "it" bag, but if I buy it, it's because I love it, not because everyone else loves it.

I hope to someday have at least one bag from every designer who's bags I like. I just recently bought my first Dior and my first Hermes and was so excited to add those to my collection. I display all of my bags behind glass doors, just as many collectors do and it's such a joy to see them everytime I enter my closet.

That said, I guess that there is a little bit of a superficial quality to my collecting since I only collect high-end designer bags. For me, it's not about what other people think of my bags since many of them would only be recognizable to the small percentage of people I come in contact with who are also handbag obsessed. I guess I'm a bit of a bag snob and just feel like the high-end ones are more special and collection worthy. :p

An expensive hobby, but also an investment. I my friends who my life heap bags always need a new one, but me in the other hand is always trying to figure out which one to carry. I if you look at how much they spend in replacements then they should have bought a quality product. Yes, I do like it when people notice my designer handbags. My motto is "who cares what you have on as long as you are carrying a flawless handbag."

Odd question - why would buying expensive handbags have to be either superficial -or- a hobby?

Is there not some in-between in your mind? And I supposed we'd have to consider your definition of 'expensive'.

:D

I show off for myself. :)

Most of the high-end accessories I have are not widely recognized and don't have monograms or logos everywhere - how many people can actually recognize the BV intrecciato, Dior cannage, or the rich color on an Hermes scarf?

I honestly couldn't care less if I'm the only one in the room to know what brand I'm carrying. I think they're gorgeous and they help brighten my day.

Love your collection, but loving the closet too.

Defenetly a hobby! The way my mind goes off at baghunt, repairing old bags or just watching bags for fun is absolutely invaluable form of activity. Other thing that got to my mind in comparison was sex, but that allways brings men involved and has more stressvalues than just bags.

Showing my bags is fun, but honestly must say, that often people are more negative about showy looks than positive...So showing is just fun for myself and my friend!

Where I currently live, Coach is about as designer as it gets, so not many people recognize my bags as designer. I buy them for me. I enjoy the way they feel and most importantly, how long they last. Or, as long as I continue to take care of them.

I collect bags as a hobby, just have always loved them from the moment I was old enough to carry my own. That said, I also enjoy the "show-off" aspect a little bit, too. But I don't really buy any premium designer ones, so I can only show-off so much, I guess. I get my most pleasure out of finding really great, well-made bags, at really great prices. I'm not so much into designer as design.

If you don't mind me asking. Where do you currently live?

I love design more so as well. I love different colors and lasting material. Nice soft leather. Etc
