Usually when someone compliments my bag, they ask how much I spent on it (especially a family member or a friend) and I don't want to tell them but somehow they get the info out of me and then I get that look. :nono:

"You spent HOW much?"

I need a polite but firm way to say it's none of their business. Sometimes I say that its a gift. I thinks it very rude to ask me how much something is when I know the reason they're asking it is pass judgement on me; unless they're thinking about buying one for their self, or they're the kind of person who doesn't judge. Like you, I appreciate it when someone sincerely appreciates my taste.

Thanks for replying to my post, BTW!

I sooooo agree!! Lots of people pass judgement on the money people invest in purses, so I am so appreciative of a forum like this that allows people with the same interest to share and truly appreciate the same things! So glad that I found this place!

to me it's like my hobby, i look after my designer bags like they are my little babies, it's for my own happiness :D and deffo because they are really good quality, if you buy cheap you will have to buy twice! that's why i prefer a damm good quality bags more than just some flimsy high street ones ( harsh but true! )

I agree. Now only hoping these designers are not getting cheap about that quality now is my only concern. I've noticed some quality decline in bags in some over the years but I will always still purchase my high quality bags but just inspect thoroughly before time. I will stand in the store for an hour to inspect. It's my $ I'm spending :-)

When people ask how much I spent I usually laugh it off and say "too much" or "I don't even remember." It's no one's business what I spent and if a stranger is asking then they're going to get an answer like that.

It's a new hobby for me! It started from real needs but as I earn enough money, this becomes a real hobby - I think designer bags are wearable arts! Perfect combination between wearing it and showcasing it :p

Way too expensive to be a hobby but I'm a big believer in spending more on particular quality items that will last you decades and even a lifetime. I only need a couple more items to complete my small collection and I'll be satisfied. Yes, it is superficial because it's nice when people notice and appreciate my bags. Nothing wrong with that! Not like I need the validation but it's always nice to hear compliments. :)

I know I get judged for buying designer bags as being superficial, frivolous, materialistic, show off, but it is really more of a hobby. I buy not for the status symbols but for the lifestyle.

Thanks for reviving this thread, babysunshine!
I love bags - they ARE works of art - and I carry everything from local craftsmen to Coach to Dior...and I just got a Jimmy Choo that I'm obsessed with. A beautiful bag is a beautiful bag. Yes, I'm judged but I could care less at this point. I used to worry, but life is too short, and if I don't judge what other people spend their money on, they have a problem for judging me.
That said, it's definitely become a hobby (albeit an expensive one). I admit I do love "the hunt" at consignment shops...but I also read books about my favorite designers and become as educated as I can about the workmanship of a particular brand. One friend/SA at Dior laughed when I walked in wearing a baja and jeans but knew details about every line - she joked that SAs may think I'm a "secret shopper"!! (If only! lol)
