"Both--I love them and for the first time in my life--to show off. But now I live in LA. It is a practical matter because here people know luxury goods and evaluate you based on superficial stuff. "

I've been living in L.A. County for nearly 50 years and yes, people know luxury goods as there is a lot of money in this city and people spend it on what they like/want. Plus, people have been buying luxury goods in this city, since the beginning of time, so to speak. So, it's really nothing new or such a big deal to a lot of folks.

But, as far as people evaluating one on "superficial stuff", yes, that is likely to happen in "some" groups, as it's just human nature. But overall, people that I know and have dealt with are not evaluating one on such items. I have friends and acquaintances who live all over L.A. County, and from a very wide financial background; from low income to very wealthy.

As far as "some" evaluating one on such items, it's not only an "L.A." thing as we can see from the many comments in the various threads on this forum. And people on this forum come from all over the world.

When I read the various comments, I feel that there are a lot of places that are far more judgemental and self-evaluating than here in L.A. And that there are a lot of people who are new to this whole designer handbag ownership and thus possibly see things in a different light than those who have owned such items forever.

I don't buy my bags just to show off to people. My handbags are an investment. I would much rather spend $1000 on a bag that I know is going to last me forever, then to keep throwing money away on cheeps bags that will break/wear out in six months.

Hobby and passion, but I'm pretty sure it started out from me just being OCD about organization and wanted to find the perfect bag that would fit everything, perfectly. We all know there's no such thing haha.

I grew up dreaming of all these beautiful things and I look at them as something I deserve and have worked hard for. I lived in a town where everyone wore fake coach or Chanel so nobody knew balenciaga or Chloe or Celine so I just wear them for ME! Oh and for my DD who looooves bags too

i think some women do buy bags just for showing off "look,i have fashion sense", " i'm rich" ....etc.

i personally buy bags just for my own interest. most of my friends don't know what designer bags i'm carrying nor what designer clothes i'm wearing, but they did say my fashion items are special for times,Lol~

I love to buy good quality bags which just happen to be expensive. Bags and shoes are my weakness and I find them an investment and I don't have to worry that they are not going to fit next year cos I ate a little too much at Christmas!! Bags and shoes are what makes an outfit in my opinion. Xx

Completely superficial here. If I wanted to carry a bag to work, to school whatever, I have no doubts I could use a green bag, random $20 backpack etc. Fashion is superficial, no matter which way you look at it. It's about being able to afford what you want to express.

I adore ppl that don't care about what ppl think. So many ppl don't choose what's best for them or make the right decision because they put other folks opinions ahead of their own. I say do what makes you happy. Buying bags are a hobby of mine and I love a bag that can last for years to come.

I'm obsessed with bags. None of my friends are. They all think I'm nuts when I buy a new purse because I already have no many... or because I pay more than $40. Obviously, I'm not too concerned with what people think! I buy them for me and I love them. Sure, it's awesome when someone compliments or admires one of my bags, and it feels special to be carrying a premier designer, but I don't carry them for those reasons.

Aw, come on! I can't be the only one on this forum who likes to show off. Yes, I love the quality and elegance of designer bags, but I also get a real kick when someone recognizes that I'm carrying a Fendi or a Prada. Sometimes I don't mind being deeply superficial.

Of course, I admit that is enjoyable! It's just not WHY I buy the bag. It's an added side bonus :)

It's superficial in my case; I could spend a lot less and get a bag that is just as good quality; whereas with muscle cars, you at least get better parts, leather interiors, etc. I think the only real benefit a muscle car and an expensive handbag have in common is history; whereas there are lemons in the car industry the QC in general in designer bags continue to go down while prices go up.

I have no problem admitting it's superficial; it's one of my few superficial addictions.

It's superficial for me on a level - tbh not many ppl I know wld really know what I carry and how much it cost. They prob assume they are fake but I don't care!
