Yes she got a major overhaul.
All hardware are replaced (thus also explains her double hook). Top handle is new. This part that secures the hook (urm not sure of the anatomy name of it :P ). Also ordered a new shoulder strap. This was all done about 2yrs ago.

I just came across your post. Did the bag only come with one hook for the handle? Or did it have a double hook to begin with? I’m looking to send one to the spa and hope they can Change mine to a double loop so I can add a strap.

Yes Hermes can do that (replace the old one ring Kelly hardware with the new double ring), if you want to do it just ask for it to make sure!

That’s great news! I understood that Hermes will only replace to how it originally came in.
Thank you!

I’m not sure they even offer single rings for order anymore...

Oh I should note that I’m not sure if they do the replacement without a handle replacement though (the only cases I know of when it was done). If your handle / bag is otherwise in good shape I would just wait; the single ring really isn’t a big issue even when you want to wear the bag with straps, it will work just fine!

Check out this thread for some more discussion on this so we don’t derail this boxcalf thread: https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/vintage-kelly-bag-single-or-double-rings.689828/

Here's my latest find that I fell in love with because of the box calf and that it was just...entirely different from anything in my closet. I wish I knew more about this folding tote other than the leathers and year, but it's from 2000.

So it's not Chamonix either? I live pretty far away from the store, so I will not be able to bring it until late autum. Is it only barnia and vache natural that has this kind of stamp?
HI can i ask if the H Spa successfully help work on your bag? im thinking of a chamonix but not sure if they can restore it, but i know they can do a good jpb for box

Dear #boxcalfnerds, am so glad l found this page. I have recently fallen hard in love with box leather and am looking at preloved. May l find out more about dried but smooth box leather? I saw a 1987 BBK which on the surface looks preety good but when l gently press on the leather, there seems to be a lot of lines/ it looks dry. Is this reversible with conditioning?
Sorry if this is not the correct place to ask, please let me know and l will move it

study the Docride threads
but I think you will find that she considers dried out leather is best avoided
there will always be other better options

Lines are not an issue necessarily, they are a characteristic feature of Box Calf leather. The issue comes when these lines begin to dry out and crack. Conditioning the leather will not reverse the lines already present on the bag, but it can prevent new lines and cracks from forming. Seeing a picture of the bag may also help. :flowers:

Thanks for the input, @r luvs h! Yes, that is precisely what l am asking. I am actually unsure if the lines mean the underlying leather is dry, or is it a characteristic to be expected in an older Box. I remember reading from the forum (it may have been a docride thread) that sometimes box can look healthy on the surface but the underlying leather is dried out. Hoping to find out more how that actually looks or feel like. Sorry l don’t have a pic, l handled it at a consignment store but decided to pass on it because l was unsure.

Very welcome! I guess it depends on the appearance and texture of the lines.

Hoping to find out more how that actually looks or feel like.
You will be the best judge since you saw and felt the bag in-person. On a well conditioned bag, the striations should have very minimal texture. This is the case for my Box Calf Kelly from 1981. It has those visible striations you described, but they melt into the leather and have no real texture. The drier the leather*, the more textured the leather will feel.

I (begrudgingly) passed on purchasing a very old Kelly from the 1940s once because the Box Calf leather was scaly and really in horrible, irreparable condition. Maybe an analogy would help— if you’ve ever done a charcoal face mask and felt your skin once the mask dried, that is how the leather felt. Of course, this is a worst case scenario, but simply put, if the leather* feels dry, it is probably dry.

*Specifically referring to Box Calf here, as there are some leathers which naturally have a dry hand.
