i actually use iced water as part of the polishing - following docride's method. it keeps the patina that way. not for the faint hearted :D

I've just done my box Kelly and plume- all ready for winter. (Otherwise If I wait for dry days they will never see the light of day.) what is the ice cube method? If you have any instructions would very much appreciate it. :smile1:

hello ladysarah, well done on your box bags! the ice water polishing method is somewhere in docride's thread...if you do a search in the thread it should turn up! she had pictures of the water on the bags too...:smile1:

Hi LS. if you look in Doc's vintage nightmares thread, version 1, and her step by step polishing method shows the ice water trick. I tried it and made a mess, no damage, but had to BR my bag again to remove the polish. I'm sure I messed up, water not cold enough (didn't have ice cubes), or too much water, or just to aggressive, the polish went a bit blotchy. Just my input, but I often never get the polish part quite right either, I can't seem to buff well enough to stabilize the polish. Again, with the proper B&O, I wasn't afraid of water, I don't recommend this to someone who hasn't built up the conditioners in the leather. Good luck, I'm sure you'll make out better than I did... :)

Hi everyone! I was just looking through the thread once again and can't help admire everyone's bags![emoji7]❣

Anyone got a new BBB photo to share compared to a vintage? I know that box leathers are now 1% of total production..anyone know why this is? Is it because not a lot of craftspeople able to do this type of leather anymore?

I missed this post when you first wrote it, but I just read it and was beside myself at your descriptions. Not for the faint of heart indeed! I'm afraid to even ask if they turned out ok I can't read everything!

I heard a year ago from good authority that they have trouble sourcing Box at the standard they require, something more seasoned tPF-H-collectors have lamented. New doesn't hold a candle to vintage. Anyway, they'd rather not produce Box products at all - or 99% of the time - than sell sub-par Box calf.

Thanks for the intel Gixxer! Waiting on for more box leather bags from H :)

I have enjoyed reading your Posts for awhile, but, secretly, I thought this is a little too much.....anyway I won a 1985 Black box Kelly 32 ghw at an auction. Enabled and trained here, of cause. I picked her up yesterday, looked at her for 2 hours on the trainride and took her straight to Hermes for SPA. The SA were very nice and impressed about The very good condition of the bag. The Person who works on the bag said she is early 70s and she will make her look like new. She smiled like she was looking forward to work on the bag. Very sweet. Now the bad part, they said it would take 2-3 month. My DH said this is crazy Hermes should take my number and call me when its my turn. Then I would miss her only for a few days. Men! Too practical and smart. She came without strap. That order takes up to 2 years.

Here are some comparisons - all are K 28's:

1977 Rouge H and 1992 Natural box or chamonix (buttery, no pores):

Black 2002 Sellier (tough and thick but basically indestructible and very smooth mirror-like shine):

2003 Raisin and 2008 BBK retourne - smooth but not soft, sheen and shimmer to the leather, no patina yet:

Sorry for the long post but I just find this so interesting!
