Very interesting.

I'm not at home right now and so have no comparison pics. My Box bags are from 1951, 1983 and 1988.

The 1951 B. Marine SM is medium thick and fairly shiny (esp after spa) but not mirror. You can imagine someone making a box out of this leather.

My early-1980s Black Lady Clutch is like calexandre's second leather sample pic (fab pics). Slightly textured and also plush. Noticeably more textured than my late-'80s bag.

My late-1980s novelty handbag (don't know what its called) is completely smooth, apart from the side panels, again shiny but not mirror. It's light but that may just be the bag.

My grandmother had a Rouge H K 35 Retourne from the late 1950s. Very, very smooth, glossy and flexible. This is the one you would want to stroke :p

Just want to share with you all my box collection. I don't baby my bags and hence lots of them have a lot of war marks! However, I admit it is time for some at home DIY spa for some of them!

Only the BBK is fr a slightly older generation w in a circle while the others are around 2000.

Raisin Kelly Depeche 38
Black Kelly 40
Indigo Kelly Lakis 40

Rouge H Plume Doc and Rio Clutch GM
Vert Fonce Sac Depeche 41 and clutch (sorry I am not sure about the name of this clutch)

HY now I get to see your box family. The Vert Fonce particularly suit those styles so well. Both will be gorgeous once that high shine patina kicks in.

Paper tiger, you have two 1950s bag in your family - that's so wonderful, as these bags we know now how well they keep of taken care of properly, plus they age beautifully. That they get soft and plush enough to have that sexy texture to stroke is so seductive, that's why I really enjoy the older box bags.

Would love to see your pics.

Yes, I use velvet because I used a lot my twillies, but I find these vintage bags too serious for them. I love them on birkins and on pop color kellys, but not on these. The only fact is that they tend to unwrap if not properly tied (is happening on the cognac one...).

I am looking so much for a green box bag (along with others...).

It looks like the pre-90's and even some early 90's box calfs had that "buttery feel" to it. Is the difference as dramatic between a 1996 and 2007 box calf? I'm buying my first box soon and am debating between them! Would really appreciate any input!

In my opinion, box pre-1980 is more smooth. It can depend also from the use and the age. The red mini kelly which is nearly new, is not patina-ed at all. What effect do you prefer?

My 1980 box calf isn't what I would call buttery - it's luscious and gorgeous but it's stiff and glossy - and oddly enough my 2000 Kelly is soft and sheeny, as close to buttery as any of my box bags. I know that's not helpful :p but box is always beautiful and tactile in its way!
