Best way to 'detax' after H in Europe

I think the difference of refund you received was due to using Amex. Anther member posted a thread about this couple years ago. She was upset about getting less and contacted H, who told her they process Amex differently. Something along the line of having Amex purchases/refunds processed in UK instead, hence having to go through currency exchange twice.

They really should warn you about the difference of cards when paying but u know how things are in Europe. Or perhaps the cashiers aren't aware of the fact.

Yes if you look at the global blue site it says that they process Amex refunds differently. This isn't my first time going through this. But in the past if you clicked on the details of the transaction on the Amex site they would tell you the amount in pounds so you could figure out the conversion rate. Now they don't tell you. I can back track from my receipts to the amount in euros. I suspect they are giving an even worse change rate than in the past and that's why they don't want us to be able to figure it out easily. Time t shop around for a new card.

Oh yeah, I myself don't like it when the bank does not post the amount of foreign currency in the statement/activity. You are probably right about getting worse rate. You know how they want to charge you as much as possible, even though they advertise everything as fab with no foreign transaction fee.

Received my refund yesterday from late November (Visa). There was a $12 difference between the original amount and the actual refund amount. A few weeks ago I received my refund from my October shopping (not Hermes) and that one was a few cents higher than the original amount.

I did not receive my refund from a smaller merchant in Nov that appears to be processed using something other than Premier or Global Blue. We'll see what happens with that one.

Yeah for sure! All of the benefits are outlined but the unfavorable aspects are hidden in the terms and conditions that the majority of people dont read. I know I dont read a lot of this kind of thing and on top of that can get card inertia.

I remembered seeing a post about what email to contact to follow up on the hermes VAT refund. I can't find it anymore. Can someone please kindly post the answer here again or direct me to that page? Thanks a lot!

I flew in through DC over the holidays. I declared my H purchases. The system is quite different from the NY area airports. They took my form, placed it in a locked plastic box and told me to proceed to a separate area for tax calculation and payment. The box was orange and I had to follow these signs, which I thought was kind of ironic. IMG_1484925382.682915.jpg

That's too funny. It varies so much from airport to airport.

Yes, Newark and JFK they sort of take you immediately and most of the time, there is no one AT the cashier's desk. One time I signed a thing that basically said "I promise to send a check for $X" which I did. Overall, given the price difference plus strength of the Dollar v. Euro, there is absolutely no reason not to declare.
