Goodness, it's an absolute miracle I haven't been banned from making too many returns (knock on wood). Often I buy things for my husband and he is so picky I would return the item, even if I got it for 80% off retail. I don't have any store cc's because I would rather count on my Chase and accrue points that way, also easier to keep track of my purchases and anything returned goes straight back into cash, not store cc credit.

I would say that in the US it is fantastic we are even able to make returns (even if it is 3 days like Dillards), having been in other countries I do know that everything is basically final sale, especially the mom and pop shops.

For me personally, more than half of my purchases are returns. I could even venture a guess maybe 3 out of 4, sometimes 100%! I don't know, it really depends. Online purchases more so since you can't try it on beforehand.

Speaking of Anthropologie, my gosh their stuff is overpriced to the Himalayas! And the quality is ok, not really any better than something at Macys. Really bizarre how popular that store is.

I think a lot of ebay sellers buy a ton of items at the discount shops like Nordstrom rack and try to sell them online. If they don't sell, about a week before the 90 day return cutoff they return them. I saw a lady doing that once at Rack, I KNOW she is a big reseller on ebay. It was like "here's my leftovers that didn't sell" to the SA. Just sort of unethical is all.

I feel this increased when NR extended their return window. At least with the 30 days the return has to be sooner and they can't sit on an item for 3 months.

That would be incredibly pathetic.

+1.

That would be incredibly pathetic.

+1 but it does happen.

A good friend of mine work as a SA at Saks. She told me she had this customer that buys a lot of goodies, then she would almost always return them within the exchange/return period. She had no idea what was going on until she stumbled across a few reveal threads here on tPF and recognized a lot of those purchases, so..

That is true but I work at a 'high-end' grocery store. LOL Most things people return we have to throw out. For example, many people find lots of things very expensive at the store I work at so if they buy a giant bag of mixed nuts from the bulk department and they don't like the price they say they don't want it. We don't put that back on the shelf, it goes straight to the garbage. Other examples include anything taken fresh from the deli, they don't like the price after the cold cut or cheese has been sliced for them they say they don't want it. We can't keep that so we throw it out. Same with olives, hot foods anything from bakery.

And for Haloween candy, or Christmas/Valentines day stuff, we don't keep it until next year, it goes back to the manufacturer so we lose money on it.

Then you have the people who get away with all the returns. And it is a problem because a lot of these people DO NOT have receipts and many of them steal. And like another poster said, what is the point of a return policy if managers don't even abide by it? So people will steal meat products and say they lost the receipt and try to get money for it. The managers get called and they just say yes 'this one time.' But these people come back and do it again. I have so many more examples and it is just frustrating when you see people do this CONSTANTLY. And I am sure at some big retailers SA's see it all the time and they must think it is a little OTT and frustrating when people return things after three years. I know I would never do that!! lol

And the profit for my bonus does come from my individual stores sales. We are the only store in the company that gets it as per our union agreement.

Anywase, that is my opinion and experience. :flowers:
With high end stores, likes whole food, I find that prepackaged items might be a problem, especially take out food. Sushi, that are 3 days old and have no date it was made, just the expiration date.
Don't even start me on a bad lettuce, i returned plenty of this, and eventually stopped bying it.
Nuts could be very bad, especially in a big bag that stays on the shelf forever. And nuts are very expensive generally.
Meat. I've never seen worst meat that Safeway sells. They color it, and it always stink. Oranges that become drab.
Costco notoriously sells fruits, that is rotten inside their packaging, or goes bad within 1-2 days after buying it, after it is removed from the giant freezer of their wearhouse.
I earn my money hard, if the store wants to get away with selling crap, they are going to get a return.

Wow my post was VERY old. I agree with the selling "crap" part. But my argument was that people did not like the price so they don't want it and were scamming my former place of employment.

Anyhow, as a working professional who now has her career I understand both sides when I do my grocery shopping. I don't pick something off the shelf if I do not intend to purchase it and I will return whatever goes bad way before the labeled expiry date (I find this happens to chicken ALL the freaking time, no matter where I buy it).

I am a fairly new customer to Saks-about 6 months. I bought three $$$$ bag and a few SLG's along with some expensive makeup. I returned the two bags I had purchased to exchange for another as I realized one wasn't functional and the other I'd been sold was very old and I wan't happy to pay full price for it. I was flagged and got a letter about too many returns which really made ma mad. I called and spoke to the customer service mgr and I gave her my thoughts to which they did apologize. But I am not impressed as their policy seems to be you buy it, you keep it. They are outdated in my opinion and one of the few that still charges for shipping and returns. I have no confidence buying with them now that I know I have to keep it all. Ridiculous.
Nordstrom has set the bar high for other dept stores-who needs it.

Topic was still on top. :smile1:
I can justify something pricey at times, but if it does not perform well, I don't feel guilty returning it. We buy big bag of nuts from Costco and not all of them are great, sometimes nuts are bad inside this package. I don't know, as you, I see both sides here.
It is not a story where people return empty pie plates because they did not like the pie and want their money back. If the bag is pretty full, I would assume quality issue more than anything else.

I should be banned from returning at JCrew and Nordstrom but I'm not :). I think I bought every single thing that was on anniversary sale.... I'm still making returns :covers eyes:

I have 2 small kids and going to the mall is a nightmare. Plus my size is weird post pregnancy so Sometimes I order multiple sizes. Glad for this thread so I know not to order too much from Saks or NM!

I order a lot from Yoox - and I return a lot too. Usually, I'm on target in terms of sizing, but especially when trying out new designers, you just never know. Some of them are way off. Thankfully, Yoox is good about returns. Although I will be more cautious in the future - you never know if/when a store policy could change!

I will say that I make A POINT of returning everything to J Crew that I purchase that ends up being of questionable quality....holes at hem of tees after one month, multiple buttons falling off $98 blouse etc. IMHO the quality has fallen so far (which I find crushing) . I feel the only way they are finally going to get the message is when people say "no more".
