I know a lot of people that work in retail and I'm not saying all but most people that return without a receipt stole it! but most companies can now pull up your information if you charged it on a card.

Most people ? Maybe some. But most is assuming a lot. Most thefts occur in store by employees. That's why security is ramped up, sure they watch customers but they watch employees more.

Had a friend who worked security and most arrests were by employees thieving.

I would say its about 50/50. I've worked in retail before and I know many other people have and yes, employees did/do steal, but lots of stores it's customers too. I remember one time working at a department store and they showed us the loss prevention office and security cameras, there was literally no way of stealing. but sure, some do still get away, but caught and prosecuted later.

I return very liberally, but never used items and 95% of the time with receipts. I probably keep 70% of what I buy. That said, I'm paranoid that I will be banned from shopping at my Marshall's soon. Has anyone ever been banned from one of those (*** opposed to full price) retail stores?

The stores I mostly go to -- NM, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales -- all put a sticker on the tag that shows you bought it. The SAs don't even want my receipts. It goes right back on my cc.

Lol if so it never happened to my mom. She'd go there for lunch and never have time to try it on so next day back it went.

The returns policy in the UK is so much harsher in comparison to the US - you cannot return makeup (sealed items must have accompanying receipt), jewellery and sales items often have their own policy (eg. exchanges/store credit). It makes me really think whether I definitely want to buy the stuff or not, otherwise I'd have to ebay them or pass it on.

Saying that, I really adore ASOS for the easy return system. I've probably kep 60 or 70% of the stuff I buy from them but did go through a month recently whether I returned everything I ordered (I think 4 separate items?) and this included a cheap accessory which only cost £4 or so. Never actually considered the possibility of being black listed but I dare say erring on the side of caution will be better in the future!

My mom is notorious for returning and she often forgets her receipt (d'oh!!). I think she got banned from returning at JC Penney so she had me do it for her once. She got store credit that was way less than the value of what she paid. Always keep your receipts, people!

I think this is a major generalization. With all the new technology and tracking purchases via cc's etc I only ever keep receipts for very large purchases, electronics or for a select few stores with very strict policies (like lululemon). I never keep my receipts at Nordstrom, for example, since I know they don't need them for a return.

Does anyone know what Ann Taylor's "ban" trigger is? I often order from their online website since my local store never has my size, but since AT clothing is never quite consistently sized, I buy everything in 2 or even 3 sizes to figure out which one fits best. Then I return the pieces that don't fit.

I can't help but think that with more and more people shopping online, companies can expect to have more in-store returns just to avoid a return fee and such.

I think it has more to do with the number of returns without receipts vs an actual dollar figure, but I don't work for the company so I can't be certain.

I hardly ever return anything. I used to work on the returns counter of a department store and we did ban people from returning stuff, but a lot of the time it was because the store thought they were stealing the stuff and then returning it for gift cards.
