Bags you don't get

I wonder if the lack of a suitable luxury tote is because it is hard to design a sexy tote. (Although the chain links on the coach totes are pretty cute but that isn't really a super functional bag either.) A tote is a work bag so I can see that it is hard to make a really cool looking designer one. There aren't any sexy briefcases either. They should make that a challenge on Project Runway.

I never understood some of the Anya Hindmarch bags in general. I know they are supposed to be whimiscal/funky, but for that price point? I'll pass...
I actually think some of the AH bags are super cute. I just think hey should be priced as novelties. Say $200ish. The I could buy one and give it away the minute I was tired of it even if it was only after one season.
There are many, many (many!!!) bags that I don't like, or that wouldn't work for me, but nevertheless, I still "get" them - like, I see how they would appeal to other people with a different lifestyle or aesthetic.

But. The Lady Dior. :whut:

Girl, I just DON'T GET YOU. I am so confused, because I adore Princess Diana - so lovely, graceful, and classic - and yet this bag named for her looks like a plastic box??? I have so many questions. I don't understand these think puffy handles. I don't understand the large-print quilting that doesn't even look symmetrical to my eye. It's so square. So small. So hard to get into. Too fancy for daily use but not sophisticated enough for night. Where do you fit in, Lady Dior??? Seems like it *could* have a place as a dainty handheld confection, but then why do I see bloggers wearing it crossbody with a strap? It doesn't lay nicely against the body. It's just awkward. And can we talk about the price??? Four or five grand for this strange little box? This is the one bag whose popularity truly has me flummoxed.
LOL! I love the Lady Dior but haven't been able to pull the trigger for some of the reasons you've mentioned.
This is like my #1 dream, to have a luxury tote bag with a zipper that is functional for work. I cannot find anything suitable across all the brands and I'm always looking. I've carried a $40 tote from a department store for 2 years straight now... although considering the daily abuse, that $40 tote has held up far better than much of my luxury stuff. I do not get at all a luxury tote with no zipper closure and not one single pocket inside or out. Now, I have to go buy a purse/bag organizer for this $1500 tote with no zip or pocket?? No. For those prices it better have zippers and pockets and some degree of organization.
ARGH! I just don't get it either. I see cute zip top totes in pleather. Why can't a premier design house get with the program????
And I REFUSE to buy an organizer or otherwise "prop up" a poorly or insufficiently designed handbag. I'm not adding in the security, structure, pockets, straps or anything else that I need for a bag to function WELL. Certainly not when I've spent thousands on the bag. :annoyed:

This I could get behind. That's why I think Kate Spade's novelty/whimsical bags and SLGs do so well, because they are priced for a season or two and then you can donate or sell on the cheap and not feel like you've been raked over the coals. I have a tote from KS in a flamingo print I use in the summer time often. I paid $88 for it. So when I get tired of it, I can get rid of it without feeling guilty.

For me:

--Goyard totes
--Bucket bags (even though I have one, I would never buy another)
--Chanel Gabrielle and Girl bags
--Givenchy Pandora
--Hermes Lindy

I get why other people like them though. I just personally don't like them.

And here the Lindy is literally my favorite of all the Hermes bags! Although at best, I *may* someday be able to convince DH to get me a preloved one.

I remembered something - while I love the slouchy, soft leather Pandora, I don't get the hard box version. It looks like if I open the bag, I'd find a wedge of cheese inside.

[emoji3] I’m on the opposite actually. I like the box version, but not the slouchy one. I see unused space, since when it’s carried, it has a diamond shape.

I don't get phone bags. I mean, I guess they're okay for someone who carries just the phone and maybe a few credit cards, but... I can't see myself spending over $100 on them. And I like to have some extra space for other essentials, too.

Also the micro Fendi bags. I saw them at the Valley Fair Nordstrom and they're super cute, but so impractical for a $1000+. If it doesn't fit my large smartphone I guess it's not for me. But again, it might work well for women who only need to carry just their cash/cc. Or just a lipstick, that's it.

Also hate all kinds of real fur on anything: bags, clothing, scarves... yeck.

  • Anything nano, micro or doll-sized - just looks silly (expensive and silly too)
  • The graffiti trend - because a) I'm no urban warrior and b) nothing's less cool than something trying hard to be cool
  • Cartoon characters, spaceships, googly eyes etc - just awful, and anyway you can't buy quirkiness you have to make your own
  • Pony hair, calf hair - makes me shudder, I can't bear the thought of touching a shedding, balding, bag
  • The Himalayan birkin makes me think of dirty snow
  • Bag charms - I don't want toys or bits of fluff hanging off my bag!

I just remembered another thing after re-reading a few posts here: diamond Birkins, or any designer purses with diamonds in it. I know very few TPF'ers own them but even with all the money in the world I could never see myself owning one at all because that bag will never see the light of day. It will probably be locked up in the bank as a "safety deposit item" or put in some maximum security vault. I also dislike exotic skins.

yes, yes, yes!!

"nothing's less cool than something trying hard to be cool"

"you can't buy quirkiness you have to make your own"

"I don't want toys or bits of fluff hanging off my bag!"

2 main categories of bags for me:

I’m thinking of the Palm Springs Mini, which, IMO which looks just.. odd as a crossbody and holds practically nothing.

I was watching Jerusha on Youtube and I saw this! For some reason, I always assumed the Palm Springs Mini is not that tiny and worn as a small (but not too small) backpack. I was so surprised that it's worn as crossbody and that it looks like a baby girl's backpack!

Hello Antigone again :p
I agree! I would’ve get it a bit more if it actually is a backpack as I was thinking of getting one. Also the bag sits strange on that blogger.
