The gold one looks fine.

Although the creeds probably looked similar, they wouldn't be identical because they have different serial numbers, are different types of leather and may have had different text.

Again, the think the Penelope bag is okay but it's the details of the creed that help us authenticate it. By "details," I mean the font, imprint pressure, spacing, text, stitching, etc.

Thank you so much! I think I'll buy it and if it turns out to be a fake I'll just take it back for a store credit (I have 7 days to return it.) There is a new Coach Store close to my home so they should hopefully be able to authenticate it . :)

In any case $50 is REALLY cheap for a leather handbag that is barely used if at all.

From what I've seen so far, serial numbers weren't assigned in order.
You would think they would have to have had some system to keep track of what numbers had already been used. I thought that maybe each station was assigned a range of numbers, and within that range, they would have been used in order. But it doesn't seem to make any sense. I have a NYC glued-in creed that starts with 066-, and a United States creed that starts with 071-; made probably at least a decade later! Maybe part of the creed number is an employee ID.

Finally! I want to see what you do to her to spruce her up!

This one's gonna take some work...I'll keep you all posted!

My basic bag with the cracked strap has the same markings in the same place. Anchors on the side too. If you need pics for reference let me know.

I also noticed that the clips on the burgundy strap are significantly smaller than my other basic bags...anyone else's like this?

Mine also has those markings as well as the anchors on the sides.

She looks great, Joodlz. Can't wait to see her cleaned up.

She's already had a bath...water looked like diluted cherry kool-aid...my hands and nails are red...ooh, what fun...stay tuned!

Since these were unique registration numbers, rather than serial numbers, there must have been some system in place to make sure there weren't duplicates, right? No wonder they eventually implemented the newer system!

My burgundy basic has smaller clips than my black, later one, the anchors are on the other side and the leather bit around the strap is fatter.

My saddle pouch did the same and I had red hands for a day! I thought it was polish. Maybe not after all.

Dear experts, i hope you're having a great weekend. I have three more newbie authentication requests to seek your advice on.

Listing number: 151254262764
Seller: pointpositive
Link: http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/151254262764?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Comments: Is it possible to tell the approximate age of this bag?

Item: COACH Vintage 9976 RED Leather Purse Shoulder City Bag Cross Body USA 1970s
Listing number: 151254245480
Seller: pointpositive
Link: http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/151254245480?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Comments: Is this really a City bag? I thought that had a flap. Also, i was surprised to see it described as from the 70s because i thought letters in the serial numbers only appeared in the mid-90s.

Item: COACH Vintage Flap 9790 Classic Black Leather Purse Shoulder City Bag Cross Body

Seller: pointpositive
Link: http://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/151254168565?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Comments: As with the previous bag, i wonder if this one is actually younger than described.

Thank you for your time. :)

Thank you for your time. :)

1- genuine, made in 2000.

The Salearea Coach Guides on both creeds and serial numbers explain how to "read" a Coach serial number especially on bags from 1994 or newer:
http://search.reviews.ebay.com/members/salearea?uqt=g

2- no, it's not even close to a City Bag. At least half of the sellers on Ebay have NO idea of the correct names of their Coaches, when they were really made, and especially whether or not they had anything at all to do with Bonnie Cashin. There are a few well-educated sellers, but most of them should just stop guessing and post decent pictures so buyers can figure it out for themselves.

This one's an Anderson Zip and it's genuine. It's not quite vintage since it's only 19 years old. And it's absolutely NOT from the mid or late 1970s! The seller is 20 years off. Again, analyzing Coach serial numbers is explained in the Salearea Guides, too bad more sellers don't use them.

3- it's 14 years old and made in 2000, NOT 1990. And if she's calling this one a City Bag, why is she calling the previous one you asked about by the same name?

Thank you, Hyacinth, for explaining that so clearly! I appreciate the time you took with that. The Salearea guides were written by you too? I will be sure to read them. Thanks and have an awesome Sunday!

Fake Fake-ola
Ebay seller: orange-yellow
item: near mint something
oooh..P begins the creed & 9954 style is a prairie bag

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-COA...ssbody-Bag-Hangtag-Near-MINT-/121295140901?pt
This isn't orange-yellow's first listing of a fake.

She sold another fake with J8Y as the prefix:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Coa...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

And this one with J8H:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-COA...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I can't read the creed on this one but it looks to be stamped awfully high up on the pocket:

I don't recommend orange-yellow

In any case $50 is REALLY cheap for a leather handbag that is barely used if at all.

Please don't EVER take a bag to a Coach store for authentication. Coach employees have NO training in telling real from fake, and if it was a bag made for the Factory Stores it probably won't even be in their computer - and according to the serial number you posted, it IS a Factory Store style and was never sold in the full-price stores.

At least 80 percent of posters here and at Ebay's own forum who took their bags to a Coach store got a completely wrong answer from the employees. Ask HERE if it's fake, here's where the experts are. And you don't even have to leave your house to find out.

There's a section about asking Coach for authentication in the Salearea Guide on Authenticity Guides, you really should read it:
