15 years ago I bought this bag at The Forum Shops At Caesars, in Las Vegas. I'm sure it was in the Coach store, but at that time it might have been a Coach Factory store. I paid about $80 for the bag, which is a top-zipped shoulder strap measuring 12"L x 7"H x 2"D. The zipper pull is stamped "COACH." It is cloth-lined in black, with 1 inside zippered compartment, and the lining has "COACH" (also in black) woven into it. "COACH New York" is stamped into the leather in the front of the bag (see photo).

It was sold to me in a COACH dust protector (which I know means absolutely nothing). Most of the bag is smooth calfskin, except for the bottom, which is a set-in piece that looks sort of "speckled" (see photo).

Until I joined tPF, I had always assumed this was an authentic Coach bag. However, looking at the Creed (see photo), I'm wondering if it is a fake. I would appreciate it if someone could give these pix their expert eye and let me know. I have gotten good use from the bag for 15 years, and I have no intention of selling it... I'd just like to know whether I've got the "real deal." Thank You!

Hey, it may still be genuine, I don't have anything close to a full set of catalogs. And earlier Coaches had a slightly different dogleash clip, or maybe the strap has been replaced.

The stitching did look slightly different but maybe the small size of the bag made it look larger. How do the stitches compare with your other Compact Pouches?

Dear Detective Hyacinth...I'm feeling a bit better about this right now! Check out the comparison of the bag in question, next to my dark brown Compact Pouch...also NYC-made. (You authenticated the dark brown one 5-23-12...old thread request and pics on P 723 #10833 and your reply on P 723 #10845...I also have a black one, USA-made that's slightly bigger.) The last picture is comparing the strap connector with one on a NYC-made Convertible Clutch (on right). I'd say the stitching is comparable, as well as where the piping seam is placed...what do you think?

P.S. The backsides of BOTH PARTS of the turnlocks on brown Compact Pouch and mystery bag are identical!

I think it's a genuine Compact Pouch or similar style, maybe they came with the clip strap for a short time. And the slightly different dogleash clip looks the same as the one on some genuine bags from the 1970s.

No worries. The Coach store sold you an authentic Bridle zip. Your bag was made in 1999.

YAY...YIPPEE...YAHOO...I've been very distressed over this all day...now I'm much happier. Thanks so much for your dedication and help...another mystery solved!

The seller obviously knows where to ask questions, since she's posted before at Ebay's boards. So I don't understand why she doesn't ask there when she has what are obviously two bags in the same style with totally different straps. Laziness, or just indifference to the facts and to listing them honestly? I'm not sure.

And there are enough references to Bonnie Cashin including links on Google to the Cashin Foundation that a seller should have no trouble at all finding out when Cashin left Coach. The seller's dates are so far off that she obviously doesn't care about researching such a simple subject. It's impossible for me to be sympathetic to a seller who's been warned several times about authenticating her bags and getting her facts correct, who has a source a few mouse clicks away available to answer those questions, and STILL refuses to be bothered. There's just no excuse for that kind of carelessness. She's even been referred in one of the Ebay posts to the Salearea Guides where all that important date information is clearly explained and yet she apparently can't be bothered to refer to them or maybe not even to read them.
While we're discussing azuremerekat and his listings (he's a guy and got rather pi$$y on the ebay boards when he made that point), would you please look at these two listings with K3H prefixes? IMO, the fonts looks rather wonky.

This listing ends in about 4-1/2 hours:
Item: 261318511396
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261318511396

And this one that was already sold:

Thanks.

That probably explains why he won't come back and ask a bunch of women for advice. :graucho:

That blasted K3H- serial prefix is a constant question mark, and I've waffled back and forth between fake and genuine for a while now. If they and other bags with that K3H serial prefix ARE fakes, and the evidence seems to indicate that they are, they're some of the most accurate fakes we've ever seen.

The Daypack 9960, listing 261318511396 is just too close to call and I don't have any depemdable photo files for a genuine one yet.

The Legacy Zip at least in the photos looks ok until you look at a few small details:

The backs of the buckle hole grommets look silver instead of brass.

The leather trim around the inside pocket looks too thick and heavy around the edges.

Most obvious - the inside pocket zipper pull doesn't match the one used inside the tan China-made bag I'm showing below. Not only is the leather pull tab in the assumed fake black one REALLY badly sewn, but the brass pull attached to the inside pocket zipper isn't the same style as the China-made bag with the outlet stamp that was supposedly made within a month of the black one even if they were madeon different continents.

The creed patch on the black one also looks like the proportions are wrong. The patch looks a bit too small for the creed stamp and number, the stitches along the edges aren't straight especially on the left side, and the depth of the creed stamping is uneven especially the last word "leather". The black Daypack from the same seller shows the same too-shallow stamping on that last word of the creed.

Small differences maybe but they're differences that shouldn't be there. Compare the pics of the wonky black one to the genuine tan one.

More opinions are always welcome.
