WOW, I thought that the tan bag was original at least.
I will be sure to let the seller know, she does sell huge amount of
vintage Coach bags so she should have known and or disclosed.
These actually went unsold on first listing at $55 starting price and I was
really surprised, but I guess other people knew they were not quite right!
Thanks for allowing me to pick your brain!
I won this one - it hasn't arrived yet - from the same seller and it looks like that strap isn't original either. The seller did confess in a message to me that she was unsure if the straps were original on any of them so she should have mentioned that in the listings. Mind you, she exaggerated the date - '70's - and didn't change that or the name even though I told her the correct style and date after having it authenticated here. (I think they look really cool anyway)

PS Thanks for the catalogue pics Hyacinth, I love seeing them!

At least that strap looks like a Coach replacement. And I agree, none of them are Bonnie Cashin designs, they're at least 10 years too late for that. They ARE neat-looking bags though.

The one thing that you should check on that one when you get it is to make sure the leather has been over-conditioned, it seems pretty shiny for a vintage leather.

Thanks Hyacinth. I'll probably give her a bath anyway.

The same seller had a similar bag listed with a different strap, so I am wondering

The first one, the olive, has had at least the strap clips replaced with the same kind of D-rings used on a Willis Bag. I've never seen those used on the Twin Clutch. Her description also says that "The strap is original and not adjustable but removable HEAVY LOBSTER CLAW CLASP drop is: 22" which is incorrect - maybe the seller re-used part of the template for a similar bag but she should have checked it before finalizing the listing.

The second bag (tan) ALSO seems to have had the strap changed. Wrong kind of clips, and too short according to the measurements. The bag came with a 36-inch strap, about a 17 or 18 inch drop, but they offered a longer 44-inch one as an extra-cost option. Neither strap is described accurately, and AFAIK Coach never used a double strap on that style.

I'm pretty sure Coach called the original type of clip a trigger snap. Below is a picture of the optional strap from the 1983 catalog, and a picture of the Twin Clutch from the 1986 catalog. It's hard to see the trigger snaps but if you look carefully you can. I'm not sure why the seller didn't disclose that neither strap assembly was original, she has enough experience to know what the original strap looked like.

Rather than comment on authenticity (which has already been done, my comment concerns my observations of the seller, azuremerekat. As evidenced by the posts here and on the ebay CAB (and possibly purse) boards, it seems that the seller has a habit of misdescribing her items using style and key words names that aren't correct, describing them as older than they are, not disclosing when parts aren't original to the bags, and listing fakes.

IMO, a seller who buys and sells as much Coach as azuremerekat should educate herself about what she sells. Not only is she (inadvertently) misleading buyers but she opens herself up to possible SNAD disputes. The fact that she admits she was aware that parts possibly weren't original is an admission that she doesn't do her homework.

The seller obviously knows where to ask questions, since she's posted before at Ebay's boards. So I don't understand why she doesn't ask there when she has what are obviously two bags in the same style with totally different straps. Laziness, or just indifference to the facts and to listing them honestly? I'm not sure.

And there are enough references to Bonnie Cashin including links on Google to the Cashin Foundation that a seller should have no trouble at all finding out when Cashin left Coach. The seller's dates are so far off that she obviously doesn't care about researching such a simple subject. It's impossible for me to be sympathetic to a seller who's been warned several times about authenticating her bags and getting her facts correct, who has a source a few mouse clicks away available to answer those questions, and STILL refuses to be bothered. There's just no excuse for that kind of carelessness. She's even been referred in one of the Ebay posts to the Salearea Guides where all that important date information is clearly explained and yet she apparently can't be bothered to refer to them or maybe not even to read them.

Coach conditioner contains silicone and that can deteriorate the bag's stitching over time.

There are probably hundreds of posts in the main Coach forum on conditioners. The two favorite all-purpose brands seem to be Lexol Conditioner (which I personally like to use with classic and vintage glove-tanned leathers) and Apple, which seems to be a bit better on the newer and more delicate leathers. Search the forums for either name and you'll find enough to keep you reading for a week.

The Rescue and Rehab thread also mentions quite a few specialized conditioners that members use on bags with problems that need a deeper or richer conditioner to bring them back to health.
