I don't know of a vintage Penny. I think you are thinking of the pocket purse 9755. It looks almost identical to the Convertible Clutch but is a little smaller, has an open pocket on the back and an open pocket inside (no zipper). It is 9 1/2 by 5 3/4 by 2 so it is bigger than the current Penny. There is a smaller vintage bag called a Dinky bag. Most versions of this don't have a removable strap.

The style numbers for these bags won't help you much because a lot of them were made before 1994 so the style number won't be in the creed.

@Whateve Thank you so much for the awesome explanation, I think the 9755 is what I'm looking for, will keep on searching:cool:

Thanks again for doing the authentication for people like us you guys really make buying used/vintage purse so much easy.:smile1:

Hi... I have this Quincey bag that a customer is concerned about. I bought it with its green and red mates. It's a beauty and I think that most of her concerns are not knowing a lot about the vintage bags...serial numbers, glove tanned leather, dye/ no dye in seams, etc. Would you mind looking at this to help put her mind at ease? I'll give her this link. TIA. I've included a copy of her email and concerns. The creed and serial are very faint and I don't have the original pics any longer. The Seria is J5D-9919. I'll try and get her to send me a clearer pic.

Forgot the email :)

hi Debi,

Sorry to have to write this email, but I am a little unsure about this bag I bought from you. I do have some other vintage coach bags and something about this one felt 'off' to me right away. Granted I am no expert, I did think it was possible that maybe the bag is not fake but just heavily restored and I am may just be not used to the glove tanned cowhide feeling so 'unbroken in.'
However, a friend who does consider herself an expert informed me that I was right in being suspicious of my recent purchase because the seams at the bottom do not come close to lining up. We compared to other quincy bag photo online that is much more even with side and bottom seems. We also were sad to find another quincy bag that was black which had the very same number "j5D 9919" and also we had never seen one with the creed so faint as this. Also I wonder about the underside of the flap being so off color and white-ish?
I am hoping you can take the time to explain to me why I should not be worried or perhaps agree to refund me and accept it back. I do hope not to offend you or make you feel as though I am accusing you of any ill intentions. If the bag turns out to be fake and you agree to refund me I would of course understand that you did not know and therefore would not leave any negative feedback on your page or make any sort of report. Hopefully I am wrong in being skeptical and you don't mind going over my concerns with me through email.

Thankyou,

Your pictures are better than anything I have - hope you don't mind if I save them for my files? Even the catalog photos are small and don't really show the details of those unusual side seams on the Quincey although you can spot them if you know what to look for.

Yours is absolutely genuine, the style originally came out in 1993. Here are the catalog pics that I could find, from the Spring and Fall1993 Coach catalogs. Neither of them show the side and bottom together but from the way the side seams are angled, they're not supposed to line up, the way they're placed is what gives the bag its shape.

I've never seen that style faked and there's nothing that would make me think yours wasn't genuine. Creed stamping could vary and on small bags they tended to wear down more quickly.

Thanks Hyacinth...they are beautiful and people that get them end up getting them in every color! Here are two more pics of the seams.

Today at the Salvation Army store I found a cute wristlet made of black/red plaid wool with black leather trim. It looked good and it had a coach hangtag. I checked inside and there was a small black tag with white stitching, but instead of saying "Made in ...." it said "Made by Coach 100% Wool".

I have never seen a tag like that before in a Coach accessory so I figured it was probably a fake and I left it behind.

I was just wondering if you have ever seen that type of tag and if you agree that it is fake? Or did I miss a great bargain? It was in excellent shape and marked only $5. Thanks!

@Hyacinth thank you so much for your help, for some reason I thought it was the Vintage Penny, trying to find one of those:smile1: Just a quick check, do you know what is the style number for Vintage Penny, thank you so much for your help again!

There's a big difference in size between the one you bid on and the vintage Penny, which is the same size as the Dinky Bag and the Pocket Purse, about 9x5x2 inches. The Pocket Purse is the only one that I know of in that group with an outside back pocket.

There was a vintage 1970s style called a Penny but it was also very small with no back pocket and was almost exactly the same as the Dinky but with a very early style clip-on double strap that was attached right through the leather on the side of the bag, pictures below. I've never found a style number but as Whateve said, very few vintage bags will be listed with accurate style numbers since they're almost impossible to find.

You need to carefully check the details and especially the measurements of the bags you're thinking of bidding on. Ask if they're not listed. You need to figure out what style you're actually looking for.

ETA - here are several genuine vintage Pennys:

@Hyacinth thank you for the information, it is very informative, but I'm little confuse now. The style that I like is actually listed under e Coach classic now on the website, and it is the Coach Classic Leather Shoulder Purse @ $198. Is this the pocket purse you mentioned above and also as Whateve mentioned that the style number is 9755?

Thanks again so much, just got really addicted to Vintage Coach bag now.

For example, what do you think of this is the vintage penny instead of the Pocket bag?

There aren't enough pictures in that listing and the ones that are there can't even be enlarged. I don't recommend buying from anyone who can't be bothered with pictures, descriptions or measurements.

First of all, STOP looking for a bag based just on a name you heard somewhere, because it doesn't sound as if you have a clear idea yet of what you're looking for. The Penny on the website, the original Penny, the Dinky and the Pocket Purse are not the same styles and they all have different details. And they're all very small.

What size do you need - MEASUREMENTS, please! Including how long of a strap you want, whether it should be removeable or adjustable, and how you're going to wear it. And remember, small bags are really SMALL. Better to go a bit too big than a bit too small especially if there are certain things like SmartPhones or tablets or eReaders that you want to carry. Measure one or two bags you have that fit all your gear and go from those measurements. And always remember, Coach bags are NOT the TARDIS! They're smaller on the inside than they look on the outside.

How many pockets do you need, and WHERE? Inside, zip or open? Under-flap? Outside back?

Figure out what you NEED and then find the styles that fit your needs. Then tell us and we can suggest what to look for.

The Classic Leather Shoulder Purse style 17994 is a remake of style 9385, just called a Shoulder Purse. The original had a single strap and a small kisslock coin purse on the inside, the remake doesn't. Origanal and remakes are shown below. I DON'T think the original has an outside back pocket, the catalog doesn't list one.

ETA - It looks like Coach cut the price on the remakes, $198 down from $298
