Please authenticate this Coach Leatherware bag...
Bought it at Goodwill today for only a few bucks.
Approx. 11.5"w x 8"h x 3.5"d Strap drop 24"
No. 1074-924 - a little hard to read.
Do you know her name, style number and approximate age...I'm clueless on this one!
As always, thanks in advance!

I can't tell from the pictures if it tapers toward the top but if it does it's a Swagger #9820, late 1980s

Item: Small Periwinkle Flap Bag (USA, circa 1989)
Seller: Garage sale $2.50
Dimensions: 7” high, 7.5” wide, 3” deep

Comments: Inside the bag is a bright blue but the outside is more of a slate gray. I hope that it is just dirty and a bit faded because the blue color is gorgeous! Please identify and give an opinion about authenticity, thank you!

It's a Casey Bag, style 9923, from around 1993.

Item: Black Janice’s Legacy 9950 (USA, 1996)
Seller: Garage sale $2.50
Dimensions: 8” high (center), 10” high (ends), 8” wide, 4.5” deep

Comments: This looks like pictures of the Janice’s Legacy bag but I’ve never seen one in real life. I thought it would be larger – around the same size as a Patricia’s legacy - but it is closer in size to a Rambler. Please give an opinion about authenticity, thank you!

No, the Janice's Legacy is smaller. A search for "9950" at Coach.com will bring up the description and measurements - and Coach's measurements are never the same as anyone else's.

The information I collect on plant codes changes constantly, and this is being added to my files. Some of the China plant codes might have been used very briefly in US plants that were only open for a short time and this may be one of them. The FS stamp to the right of the creed isn't something you'd find in a fake, so it's almost certain there WAS a J plant open in the US or one of its terretories at one time. Other possibilities are that a fake was returned to a Coach store or outlet and ended up being marked down as a Final Sale item, or the bag just didn't meet production standards and was reduced for final sale, or even that Coach may actually have been making some test bags in a Chinese plant but marked them with a Made in US creed.

The big problem with the Court Bag you mentioned from a previous post is that the year code is for 2002, and by that time the J plant was already producing bags in China. J codes are pretty common in styles from the early 2000s so a J code marked as US-made from April 2002 would have been strange. But as always, something could turn up later to make me change my thinking. A pic of that creed is below. Remember, NONE of this information comes from Coach since they've never released any of it publicly. EVERYTHING on plant codes has to be figured out from the bags themselves, and maybe not all of those are genuine either.

The overlarge zipper pull is unusual, I've seen similar designs on genuine bags though. It probably wasn't on the bag originally since silver hardware wasn't even used in 1997 with the possible exception of one very early Chinese plant that I've only seen on one other bag that I'm still not completely sure about. It also looks like the grommets around the buckle holes in the strap are silver-tone instead of brass but that could just be a trick of the light.

There aren't any easy answers and what went on behind the scenes is something we'll never know. Trying to figure it out is mostly a matter of guesswork. On your Janice's Legacy the creed stamp itself seems ok, the serial number font is a bit large but that could just be a quirk of that particular plant, the strap grommets are a question mark, and the zipper pull may be a plant mistake or a later repair. So in this case, you're guess is as good as mine, because all I can do is guess.

WOW and WOW and WOW! you really are a wealth of information Hyacinth. geez, thank goodness i overcame my shyness and tried to asked all these questions regarding early coach bags. it feels good to know some of the reasons behind the mysteries surrounding these bags. so much to learn for a newbie like me! =)

Thank You once again Hyacinth for sharing your expertise and time. You truly are a blessing.

Why are you not posting the link to the listing?!?

To be honest, it was because it was listed at a ridiculously low price, and with hundreds of people on the Coach forum, I am not about to list a bag and have someone snatch it up from under me. I saw two other bags exactly like it listed for well over $100, and I got this one for $24. Even if it is a fake, you can't get a leather bag at Target for that price. I have been wanting to start a vintage collection, and wanted to start with something low priced to get my feet wet. I have gotten outbid several times recently, and didn't want that to happen.

Now that the auction is over, I'd be happy to post the listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Coach-Handb...&prg=1006&rk=1&&autorefresh=true#ht_500wt_949

Can I ask, why is the listing even necessary? What if it was a neighbor selling the bag and gave me some photos? If all that is needed is photos and a creed, I don't see the point of asking for the listing. It could potentially set up some members here for people to outbid them in my opinion. People are always lurking on here.

The seller never could get a good photo for me of the creed, but she did provide me with the serial number, after much persuasion. Like I said previously, even if I was duped- it's a $24 leather bag.

Serial number is H1D-9178

It does slightly taper to the top! Yeah! Thanks for all your valuable information and the time you dedicate to me and all our forum members! Now, I'll need all my rehab skills to bring this old gal back to her glory. Thanks again for everything!

We ask so we can:

1-make the listing number and seller's name searchable so other members can know if someone else already asked about the same auction so we authenticators don't have to be answering inquiries about the same item or seller over and over again

2-make it possible for other members to search the seller ID and find our responses in case the item turns out to be fake or the seller turns out to be someone they probably shouldn't deal with

3-check the seller's history and Feedback record at Ebay and Toolhaus

4-check for things like stolen photos and descriptions, possible shill bidding, sellers advertising their own auctions, etc

If you found what you think is a deal and don't want to be outbid, SAY SO. Normally that's not a problem as long as it isn't a regular thing. Don't give us a story about why you can't post links or other information. We don't have a great deal of patience - at least I don't - nor are we stupid. If you want to risk not finding out that the item you're looking at is fake or questionable, or the seller you're thinking of dealing with shouldn't be trusted to sell you a newspaper, that's your decision. But stretching the authenticators' patience is never a good idea since we/I don't have much to begin with.

Those are the Forum Rules, there are good reasons for them and they're for everyone's benefit, not just the posters asking about auctions.

Post photos of the creed when you get the bag, 9178 isn't in my files. It may be the seller mixed up the numbers.

It was never my intention to annoy, test anyone's patience, or imply anyone was stupid. My true apologies if that was construed.
