Been Burned: How can you tell it is a fake, it looks real to me... and I want to make sure I know what I am buying.

Sloppy stitching, wrong color combination, wrong hardware. (I don't believe the bag was even made in that color pink.)

Bear with me... how is the hardware wrong, and how is it the wrong color (I don't doubt you, I am just trying to become a more informed Coach lover).

This is a style that was fairly "well-faked" and some of the differences are very minor and unless you scrutinize them carefully, they're hard to pick up on.
Compare the layout, font and stitching below:
Compare the hangtags. The fake not only is the wrong type of hangtag but it has an improper font:
See the roundness and spacing on the rivets and the thickness of the o-rings. Also compare the shape of the patch on the front.
The difference in the thickness of the font in "COACH" is not quite as noticable on this one but the spacing and gauge of the letters are off.
As for the color, the fakers will often make something in a color that Coach never used. I don't believe that they ever made this bag is pink and the green lining is disgusting. The color combination is one that wasn't made.

Sometimes a visual is the best way to demonstrate the problems. Note that the listing in question doesn't have the best pictures but the differences are obvious.
This is a style that was fairly "well-faked" and some of the differences are very minor and unless you scrutinize them carefully, they're hard to pick up on.

wow, thank you for the mini-lesson. Your examples and pictures are really good references to me- thank you so much. Given the information above, what do you think about this listing? I'm going to see if I notice differences... It says "op art" but its not, and one photo shows three hang-tags but not the other. Real? Why would a real bag start at .99? Is that suspect?

If you can bear with me for one more question (you have been more than helpful) - here is a photo of a creed of a handbag purchased on eBay (i have a couple pix, hard to photo detail). Here's my question: What is the bullet/bullseye in the upper left corner of the creed?

It's genuine. It has a few condition issues and is definitely NOT from the 1970s! (Unfortunately most sellers don't have a clue about when their Coach items were actually made).
