Small differences in the hardware are always possible, without being able to see them and to feel the leather in person I really can't give an opinion. Leather differences can just be due to different batches of leather or different dye processes.
The W plant doce seems ok, probably one of the last US plants and apparently was only open for a few years in the early 2000s before production of the remaining leather bags was switched permanently to China. I've seen other leather bags with that code and several of them had outlet stamps, so those are more likely to be genuine.
Thanks, Hyacinth...I gave the brown one a good looking-at after reading your reply and found no outlet stamp...the leather is certainly different, much stiffer and much smoother on the suede side. I think it will remain a mystery!
