I’ll do that, thanks. I noticed that the dimensions on the picture are given in centimeters and inches so perhaps it was released outside the US.

AFAIK Coach didn't really have any non-US points of sale until around 1988-89 when they opened what I think was a small boutique or sales counter in a major Japanese retailer.

It could be that Coach was planning ahead. The Metric Conversion Act was signed into law in 1975 (remember that?) and had things gone as the overly optimistic US leadership planned, the US would have been "metricated" probably within 10 years. That time period fits perfectly with the style of that advert, which is very similar to the mini-catalogs from the mid to late 1970s that many of us are familiar with. I think Coach was just making sure that their ads were ready for the new system, no matter how quickly it happened. IF it happened.

I do remember the metric period, you are probably right!

I took a quick look through some photos of various dashboard gauges of US-made cars and trucks from the mid 1970s. Most of the ones I found with pre-1975 production dates just had your old basic MPH-only speedometers. Once you get into the later 1970s you start to see the dual readings with combination MPH and KPH dials. IIFC the government required the dual number gauges, maybe also to prepare for the changeover that never happened. The Feds threw all kinds of new regulations at the auto industry in the mid 1970s.

ETA - And remember the "ruff-out" style mini catalog from 1976 that Lake Effect posted 2 months ago in the Vintage Catalog thread? The measurements are given in standard US and Metric.

It looks like by 1978 they'd gone back to just the old US inches measurements

I have a few more bags to authenticate, but I think I'll wait awhile to ask. I feel like Hyacinth is working overtime to keep up with all the requests while the other volunteer authenticators are out and about. We appreciate you, Hyacinth!!

Thanks, but it's not a problem. I'm locked to the TV for the next few hours anyway and the TV is right next to the computer. It might take me a bit longer to answer but I'm not planning on moving far from this seat.

Hi Hyacinth please may I have the following bag authenticated. Thank you so much
Item: crescent
Listing number: 203991572939

Comments: I’ve bought this item. But now starting to think it’s fake because the metal pieces on the strap are a different colour to the brass hardware on the main bag. Just want to check because it’s coming a long way. Thank you

Comments: I purchased a Edie turnlock from the Category: Re-Loved it was restored. I have the receipt and the tag is still on the purse. I’m trying to sell the purse and the Authentication department for Mercari states it is “inconclusive”. Can you please help me with authentication? Thank you

You'll have to wait until one of our authenticators who is familiar with newer styles gets back from their vacations. Meanwhile, when it's convenient, please include copies of the tags and paperwork from Coach's Reloved department, and also look carefully for a small white tag that's probably at the very bottom of one of the inside pockets that includes 2 lines of letters and numbers showing the production codes and try to take a readable photo of the tag and include it in your reply. Thank you.

I'm sorry, but it's fake. The difference in colors between the strap grommets and the strap buckles can be a problem, but the most serious and undeniable proof that the bag is fake is that the font used for the serial number is NOT correct for the year and plant indicated by the production codes in the serial number. The shapes of the letters and numbers is wrong, the genuine D plant serial has some digits that are slightly squared off on the tops and bottoms. The underscore in "No" is also too long in the fake.

Most creed and serial number stamps, which were 2 separate stamps, during the period between about 1990 to the early 2000s when production was being transferred to China and that were assigned to permanent plants had individual characteristics unique to each stamp. The fonts used in the C and D plant serial number stamps are as recognisable to most experienced authenticators as the Coca-Cola logo.

The "SOLID BRASS" stamp on the buckles is another big problem, Coach hasn't used solid brass buckles on their bags since about 1991. Those buckles have been found on numerous fakes, but not on ANY genuine bags from the time period indicated by the production codes (September 1996).

Here's the creed and serial in the fake:
1996_D-plant-FAKE_J6D-9988-Saddle Bag+strap-a.jpg

and the serial number in a genuine Coach with the same production and date codes as the fake. (The small lines ABOVE the numbers occur in some genuine bags from that time period, June 1996)
1996_D-plant-outlet-J6D-9993.jpg

Insist on a full refund, including shipping if the seller wants it back. They shouldn't even ask since the bag is counterfeit and can't be sold in the US or the UK.

I was comfortable when I purchased but feel like I need confirmation now that I’ve received it. I’ve added a pic of the creed here. I think it’s better than the seller provided. Let md know if you need anything else. Thank you!
