Comments: I believe I recognize the fake lining now.
You are correct.

And the serial number, although it can be on authentic bags is common on fakes.

ETA: dashcounter also sold another fake with the same wrong style number:

Hello ladies!

Could you please let me know if this Ashley is authentic before I sell it?
I got it about 2 yrs ago from a coworker, and she has many designer purses, I didn't doubt then, but as I said I want to sell it to buy a new one ;), and of course I have to be sure.

If you need more pictures let me know. TIA!

Hi everyone! It's been awhile! :smile1:
I think this is a duffle sac. It has a talon zipper, the buckle is different than other bags I've seen, and it looks like a piece of berkley suede was used on the creed pocket. (The rest of the bag is smooth leather.) I used the eyeshadow trick to make it readable and it reads fine. The serial number is: 331-3705. The dimensions are: 9'' x 13'' x 9'', 15.5'' at the top.
Any idea on the year or timeframe for this one?
TIA :smile1:

Hello to all the pros:D
I am having a hard time with this bag, the creed is really hard to read but I can see
K9S-99_ _
can't make out the last 2 digits, everyway I look they look different sometimes like a 5 and something and then like a 3 and something
my biggest concern is the S plant code with United States on the creed.
everything else about the bag points to a murphy but the creed bothers me.
I even used some powder to try and read it.:thinkin:
any thoughts on this one
Thanks RC

From everything I've seen, the term "New" when you find it in a catalog or on a Wayback archive of an old website page, doesn't mean that something is a new version of an existing style. It just means that it's a new, recently introduced style.

I think Whateve is right, you managed to get a Pilot Bag long before Coach ever started marking them as such. Note the "FS" stamp on the creed, it's not uncommon to see that in bags that had some kind of oddball mistake or for some reason weren't sold through the same channels as the boutique styles.

And yes, Coach made mistakes when stamping serial numbers. As long as the rest of the bag is right, it doesn't mean anything, it just might make it a bit harder to sell and should always be disclosed in the listing.
I reached out to the person I bought these from (31 bags)...she is for sure a collector and bought all her bags directly through Coach and not second hand. I also asked her about the "Frankenstein" Berkely bag (love that name Whateve!)
She said the strap was original to the bag. and this was less than half of her collection (I'd like to see the ones she kept! LOL) I know everyone can say that but you can see all the bags have been well taken care of, etc.
I think it is probably a prototype or experimental bag.
Its very strange, the front flap has no closure on it; the strap is an odd length...good for shoulder only...and the inside pocket is very shallow - though it is deep enough to carry a phone thank goodness!
PS - Here is a better photo of the creed so you can see the white FS stamp and the bullseye up top.

Definitely fake. The back of the turnlock has indentations, the font of the serial number doesn't match ANY other plant's, the Murphy's style number is 9930 and I'm seeing K9S-9958 in the one you're asking about. The dowel is also too short and doesn't fit the bag.

And you're correct about the S plant code - in 1999 the S was being used ONLY by a Chinese plant that was making travel and business items, like briefcases and garment bags. I've found at least 4 GENUINE S-code China creeds from 1999, all the fonts match and they all have different month codes.

I am a new user and recent fanatic of all things Coach. I have been building my collection and prefer the odd, unique, and vintage so far. This was my first Coach purchase and of course it was from a top seller on Ebay. I can not find any info on the serial number and notice a few strap sewing flaws that could be a shortening technique but alas I must remember I am a newbie.......Please tell me I really have a new or little used authentic vintage Coach. If not I will be OK It is in perfect shape and beautiful leather so @ 20$ either way I win. HELP!!!

Creed # No 501-5506 Stamped on inner zipper pocket
Hardware is Brass and strap is removable
Measurements are W- 10 inch
H 10 1/4inch
open depth 3 inch
Base depth 4 inch
Strap end to end is 36 inches
Thanks all, any help is appreciated. Authenticate and Identify if possible.
Or bust it. :)

It is bone color, 1 inner zip pocket and 1 outer pocket, no lining.

Welcome to tPF!

I don't see any strap problems. If you mean the overlap near the end where two lengths of piping or edging was sewn together, that's normal on vintage and older Coaches.

The bag is genuine and vintage and could be a Classic Shoulder Bag, style number 9170, probably from the early to middle 1980s.

Here's a better photo for you to look at

better photo!
Thank you! I agree with Hyacinth that the creed looks correct.
I reached out to the person I bought these from (31 bags)...she is for sure a collector and bought all her bags directly through Coach and not second hand. I also asked her about the "Frankenstein" Berkely bag (love that name Whateve!)

Having the strap attached to the back must make the bag tip forward. I love the cute turnlocks but I imagine it would be a pain if you had to undo them every time you wanted to get inside the bag.

You have fantastically made my day!!
Thank you for your time.

I will honor it as my first and genuine Coach bag.
Congratulations! Not only did you get a bargain, but to find a bag that is over 30 years old and still in new condition, especially in a light color, is amazing!
