IMPORTANT READ-ME

Please post authenticity questions related to COACH in this thread. No PMs please.
For further information, please refer to the first post on page 1 of this thread.

Please follow the following requests:
  • Before you submit a request for authentication, please search this thread to make sure that the item has not previously been authenticated by searching the seller ID and/or item number. This is not a thread to ask general questions about COACH, please refer to our main Coach forum for such information.
  • Note that authenticators have the right to refuse any requests. This is a free service, but it is imperative that you help our authenticators by using the following format:
  • FOR ITEMS LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Listing number:
    Seller and site where listed
    Link:
    Comments:

  • FOR ITEMS NOT LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Where purchased or how obtained
    Comments:
BASIC PICTURES REQUIRED (but more may be requested): If necessary pictures are in the listing, it's not necessary to upload and duplicate them.
  • Front of item
  • Back of item
  • Full clear and legible creed text and serial number
  • Made in tags (when available)
  • Measurements
  • For bags with turnlock closures, show pictures of back of female side of turnlock
  • For bags with magnetic snaps, show pictures of the male part of the snap so that the numbers and letters on it can be read
  • If applicable, search interior of bag and/or pockets for small white tag with production information and include a picture of that.
Thank you and be safe!

Just to clarify, authenticators (and posters) on TPF get no compensation for their time, advice and expertise. We volunteer our time and expertise as time, jobs, family and real life allow.

And as such, as per post #1 on the first page of this thread, "Authenticators are not required to answer every request and it is their right to ignore a request that is not in the proper format."

And more specifically, in this long thread on the very subject, there are many posts over the 82 pages that state that any member can ignore any request or any member they choose and for any reason or for no reason. The following are just a couple of posts.

Because it's come to our attention that we've been criticized for not authenticating certain sites and/or certain sellers and are (said to be) illegally costing such sellers business, I'm explaining why some posters may be ignored, some posts of some sellers' listings may be ignored and some sites may be recommended against. And there's nothing illegal about it!
Thank you for taking the time to explain that to me. I’m so sorry if I came off as rude or entitled in my previous comment when I mentioned searching for zyanyatreasures. My reason for mentioning your choice not to authenticate items from their listings was to convey that I was aware there were issues with the seller, but that I wasn’t sure if they involved counterfeit goods or not, which was why I went ahead and posted the listing. I didn’t word it right then and I’m probably not doing a much better job now. I’m really grateful that you guys share your expertise with us here for free. Thank you for taking the time out of your lives to provide this service, and again, I’m really sorry if I came off as demanding or dismissive of your choice.

Hi! Could you please look at this one for me when you get a chance?

Aaaand a follow up question - what IS this bag? 9”x6.5”x2” and with that pocket and that strap, I don’t recognize the style. Thanks again

And you all are awesome. When I first joined tPF, I felt like I was doing something illegal. Like I’d snuck in through the back door of the archives and was retrieving messages that couldn’t possibly be free of charge. Like, who pays them to do this??? And why haven’t I had to pay to join? I was baffled. Still am! All of your knowledge and passion and the whole community that I stumbled upon is truly a rare gift. Thank you for everything you do!

Based on the measurements, it's a Capri Bag Small, style 4013 from the Lightweight line, apparently introduced in 1990 and discontued within a year or two. It's in my paper Spring 1990 catalog.

I'll also add my 2 cents about why I choose who I authenticate for. Here are just a few recent comments directed to tPF and to BeenBurned and me specifically by an "unfriendly" site owner who I'll just call "D-D" but who we've previously discussed. The seller of the white Devon is a member and site cheerleader in good standing there:

Hyacinth...you are an idiot!

So I troll TPF for deals and Information? I don't think so! I watch them so they don't get away with $h1tting on me or fellow members. If anyone knows someone that does more for the Vintage coach world than me, speak your piece. Done with rant. TPF and Hycinth are LOSERS.

(and right under copies of the tPF avatars of BeenBurned and me)
A$$holes of the Month...and Cece...glad you found a home you braggart and nosey A**hole!

(edited for obscenities)

He can call me names until he's blue in the face, I've never given a flying feck about that kind of childish behavior. But I see no reason to lift a finger to do anything that in any way promotes that site and any of their sellers who participate in the insults, lies and BS.

So, am I justified in refusing to authenticate her items? You decide.

Obviously you don’t need me to tell you this, but you and BeenBurned are absolutely justified. I had no idea who this seller was, and if I had known, there’s no way I would’ve posted that bag for authentication. I’m not going to support anyone who engages in such vindictive, petty, and immature behavior. Thanks for letting me know about that, and thanks again to BeenBurned for messaging me about the seller. I’m new to the world of vintage Coach and it didn’t even occur to me that fully grown sellers could be so childish. You guys provide an important service and I’m sorry that you sometimes have to deal with such crap for it. Thank you so much for all that you guys do.

Whoah! What the hell? That person is crazy, I am sorry you don't deserve that kind of abuse :(

Oh, I DO ignore their comments. Their Facebook sites are all Private anyway, but the site owner "D-D" made it a very special point to leave the one page with those comments Public so we here at tPF could see exactly what he thought of us. Nice of him, wasn't it?

And yes, without bringing up politics, it seems that there's a strong and growing resemblance between the two individuals. (But the only way that leader of a country would love Coach handbags is if they were filled with thousand-dollar bills and pictures of naked women.)
Oh man, that’s tooooo good. ROFL

I'm sorry for your loss.

The first one is a genuine Metropolitan Briefcase, style number 5180 and made some time between 1988 and 1990. The color is probably British Tan but the outside may have faded a bit from the original color. It's best to just describe it as Tan.

Here's a scan (not the best quality, I apologise) of a page from Coach's 1987 Holiday catalog showing the description and measurements:

5180_Metrpolitan Brief-holiday1987-a.jpg

The news about the blue handbag isn't good. It's counterfeit and worthless since it's illegal and classified as a felony under US law to sell or trade counterfeit name brand items anywhere in the US. The serial number prefix is found only in fakes.

I hope this helps.
