Hi,
I have a Coach purse that was handed down to me by my mother-in-law. I read the 1st post on page 1 of this thread posted by the admin. I tried searching the serial number in the search bar at the top right, however, nothing comes up. I don’t know how to search within this thread specifically, so I hope someone can let me know if this is authentic. If additional pictures are needed, please let me know and I can take some to post. I appreciate any advice, thank you!
-Jenn

It's authentic. It might be a convertible clutch if the measurements are around 11 x 7 x 2. It was made in the late 70s or 80s. Bags with all numeric serial numbers are random unique numbers that have no relation to the style. You shouldn't find a reference to the number since it was only used once.

ETA: with your new pictures, it definitely looks like a convertible clutch. Style #9635.

Wow, thank you so much for your speedy reply! I appreciate your time in explaining the serial number on my bag. Would you say this particular bag (from the time period of when it was made) is rare to find?
thank you!

You're welcome! The style isn't hard to find. It was a very popular style made for many years. However, the color of yours is very nice and hard to find.

That’s very interesting! Thanks again for your help. :)
Hope I’m not taking up too much of your time—would you happen to know where I could find out more information on how much this bag is worth?
Thanks again, my apologies for all the questions.

Authenticators - please authenticate for me. I’m suspicious of the numbers. When I enter the 2nd set a page of Coach bags with some type of Asian script shows up. A friend gave it to me. It’s flawless. The numbers don’t show well. They are F1780-F13884. I know F means factory outlet. Thank you.

You could look on ebay for Coach 9635 to get an idea. Here are some recent sales of that style. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=coach+9635&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1 Of course, color and condition make a difference.

I think the Made in New York City bags may be more sought after but it may just be the impression I have. Others with more experience may have more information on this.

Keep in mind that more than one of those "mid-alphabet" plant codes were "floaters". They were often assigned to various plants as needed. We think of "P" as being for Costa Rica but it's also been used for an unknown plant that used a US creed. "M" bounced around more than a tennis ball at Wimbledon, mostly back and forth between the US and Costa Rica. Remember, quite a few of what we call "Coach plants" weren't permanently owned by Coach. They had their main plants like A, B, C. and D but much of their production was done at plants they rented or leased, often just partially, for various time periods and to fill seasonal or unexpected demand.

That's one reason I'll never make any kind of master list of plant codes, there are just too many changes that some of those letters and numbers have gone through, and it got even crazier once Coach started prepping for the move to China at the end of the 1990s. There are a very few like Italy that could be considered almost permanent, but as you went deeper into the alphabet, the plant locations often changed as needed. That's why keeping records of when those codes were used by which plants is so important.
Thanks for sharing @Hyacinth
This is very informative and kind of you to share it around with us

Comments: I know from here that this seller has a history of fakes.

Apparently she also has a history about stretching the truth about the designer of the bag too.

I just want to remind everyone buying or selling vintage Coach that Bonnie Cashin ended her collaboration with Coach in 1974. (That was a good 15 years before this bag was made).

Please always be extremely cautious about bags being labeled as "Bonnie Cashin" by uneducated or unscrupulous sellers to pump up the perceived value. If Cashin had designed or made all the bags sellers have claimed for her, she would have been chained to her desk at Coach until sometime around 2007. (And since she died in February of 2000 that would have been a little unpleasant). If a Cashin attribution is important to you, please ask us if it's correct.

Never accept a seller's guess about style names, production dates, and especially designers as gospel without asking someone here who knows.
