Hello again, this is a puzzle. The bag appears to be a basic bag, the seller says had a metal tag that fell off? I don't know if there is any way to authenticate without marks? It does look like thick early leather. Would be cool if it was the real deal. Thoughts?
Thanks as always!
I'm not comfortable authenticating it without markings or imprints of any kind. There's no other way to do it since there's NO trademark or other legal protection that prevents a manufacturer from copying another manufacturer's styles or designs as long as they don't copy their trademarks or logos. Anyone can use thick leather or hire competent leatherworkers who can stitch straight seams, and hardware items like Talon or YKK zippers were available to anyone who wanted to buy them.

We can only say that something looks similar to a Coach and that there aren't any obvious red flags, but that wouldn't stand up in a court of law as proof. It's the buyer's decision if they want to take a chance. But I would NEVER advise buying it for resale.

And it's a "Basic Bag" style, not a "Convertible Clutch" style. Even though the measurements don't help much (both styles in their early versions had similar measurements side to side and top to bottom), Convertible Clutches have turnlocks.

More opinions are welcome.
I doubt it was made by Coach. If it was early enough to have a metal tag, it would most likely have a different type of zipper pull. If there had a metal tag, I would expect to find holes where the tag was attached.

Yep, I looked for holes but didn't see any. Zipper pulls on vintage Coaches are definitely one of your areas of expertise. I don't think any of the bags I still have are older than later 1980s, not an NYC bag in the bunch anymore.

There was a type of zipper pull called a "paperclip" used on early bags. You can see they were still using them, at least on some bags, when they started using creeds. I don't remember seeing a pre-creed basic bag. The earliest catalog I have that shows it is 1976. Do you have a date for the style?

Nope, just the same thing as you, that little folding B&W "catalog" from 1976. If any earlier date was ever shown in an ad or other corporate history page, I never saw it or made a note of it.

The seller says "I believe this is a vintage Coach Convertible Clutch that originally had a metal Coach tag that fell off." That's an opinion though, not a statement of fact. If she had the actual tag it would help solidify her belief.

FWIW, I also looked for the holes and didn't see anything.

Just a warning that this isn't the only non-Coach that herroyalshyness has sold as "Coach." (There may have been more than these.)

Translating Coach serial numbers and production codes is covered pretty thoroughly along with a lot of other information in the six Salearea Coach Guides that are Pinned to the top of each Coach Shopping page that has an index. It's best if you read the entire thread to get some background about its history.

The D in the serial prefix is for the fourth month, 4 is for the year, and B is for Coach's 2nd US plant which I think might have been Miami. So made in April 1994 somewhere in the US or one of their US Possessions. Some Coach plant codes still haven't been pinned down.
@Hyacinth thank you so much (apologies, I thought I had replied with my thanks earlier). I have downloaded the guides for my education and future reference. Zoe x

"You guys" isn't just Canadian, it's very "Chicago" too, we were using that in grade school and still do. I think in the New York-New Joisey area it's officially "youse guys" but I'm basing that on tv shows.

"Hello all! I always appreciated your help. Why would someone say that to you guys?"

Long long story, much too long for here, and since I'm not a clinical psychologist I'm not even going to try and get into someone's head or motives or the games people play.

But that's just one of the posts that have survived. You should read the ones that Ebay removed.
I'm not Canadian and I've used that expression (you guys) all my life. I'm not from the south so 'you all' or 'y'all' isn't something I normally say.

Thank you both for reassuring me that I am not saying anything incorrect. Youse guys...:biggrin: The movie 'My cousin Vinny' just popped in my head!

It's authentic and looks like a Chrystie bag, style 9892.

ETA: The pictures shown don't appear to have been taken in a Goodwill store. In case the pictures show a different item, you should be aware that it's not a good idea to use pictures of a similar item to verify authenticity of another. They may not be the same.
