Aww, thanks for authenticating it as a real Kensington Brief. Now here's the gulp moment, uh oh, as I would hate to fail this pop quiz. "M4C-5279" means Manufactured in 1994 in US plant C. So if the bag were theoretically made in 2004, it should be M04C? But the M to me is confusing. If the month was designated by the first 12 letters, "M" is actually supposed to be a 13th month, which of course, does not exist. So was one letter skipped and "M" actually means December?

What I also find confusing (or concerning but I guess they're all acceptable) is that some vintage creeds have the "Coach" logo while others have "Coach leatherware". The other is having bags with "This is a Coach bag. It was handcrafted in the United States..", versus "Made in the United States" at the bottom of the creed, but I suppose they are both authentic as long as the serial numbers are legitimate.

Yes, it's from 1994.

The M month code is mentioned in the Guides, Coach usually skipped the letter "i". And the different creed wordings are also mentioned. Coach changes those details often.

And it's not just the serial numbers by themselves that have tio be correct for the item. The fonts, spacing and combination of codes also have to be right for the bag. There are a lot of details that have to be looked at and compared with genuine examples.

That is most interesting. Thank you very much. I also noticed that bag styles may also have different style numbers. For example, this bag that I’ve known as the 5279 (Kensington) is also the 9940. But I don’t know if the attached here is actually genuine. Seems like it is.

No, they're not the same bag. This is why sellers need to put measurements in their listings. The genuine 9940 Dowel Field Bag in that listing isn't a full size briefcase and measures only 13x10x4 inches. The 5279 Kensington is 16x10x4. There are a handful of styles that have 2 style numbers but those don't. But there are also a lot of styles that share the same names, and an increasing number of style numbers that have been re-used for different items. Coach is recycling style numbers and even going back to 3-digit numbers for some accessories since apparently they've finally run out of numbers and are starting over.

Oh my. At first glance, I thought they were the same style but that the 9940 pics were a bit skewed making it look less wide. Now I know so thank you. Yeah I’m not sure why it’s too much to ask some sellers to list dimensions by default
