I purchased this online through ebay and now it is in my possession. Im not sure how to post a link.

Hello my dearest Authenticators! :flowers:

I realize it's highly frowned upon to purchase on eBay without first getting the item cleared here, but I was going against the clock . So, I did what every irrational shopaholic would do--I hit the bid button, and won.

There's no creed photo in the link (trying to get from the UK-based seller), but I'm hoping the other photos can give an indication of whether it's authentic or fake.

The same way as any other bag from that time period. The Salearea Coach Guides have sections on both creeds and serial numbers, including how to interpret the codes of bags made since 1994:
https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/salearea-guides.983575/#post-32252957

Individual physical DETAILS of things like the creed stamping and the fonts used in serial numbers could be different for different plants, but the meanings of the codes stayed the same most of the time, although some stamps had scrambled-up codes and some plant codes were "floaters" and used by different plants as needed.
Right, but I’ve read and re-read the salearea guides. The number on my bag read G 62-xxxx. That’s why I was confused as to the dating and was mentioned it was a 1998 Bag.

It's easy for us to misread or mis-type a digit in a serial number, in this case a 6 was mistaken for an 8. The bag was actually made in 1996.

There just aren't enough - or in this case any - details that can prove a Coach is genuine. The creed and serial number photos are the most dependable and sometimes the only way. I'm not comfortable guessing and that's what I'd be doing without that photo, sorry.

If you can't get a photo and still want the bag, it's Ebay. Buy it and post a photo of the creed and serial number here, if it's fake you should have no problem getting a refund from Ebay.

Since it's Sunday and the listing just ended, it's highly unlikely that the seller has already packaged it.

Request more pictures, possibly explaining that you want the bag but it has to be authenticated and the pictures in the listing weren't adequate.

Hello! I'm new here. Please authenticate this bag:
Item Name: Janice Legacy
I had a hard time getting a good pic of the creed. I'm also still learning how to use my camera so if you need better pics let me know.

Measurements of bag: about 7.5” high, about 9” wide; total length of strap is 52”

thanks!!

To post a link to a listing for which you have the seller's ID and/or the item number, it's easy.

The seller ID, link to listing, item number and all other info related to the transaction is in your email (that ebay sends when you bid, purchase and pay) as well as in your "my ebay."

With the item number, copy and paste it into the search box. Since it's an ended listing, you have to scroll down the page and on the left side, there's "completed" and "sold." Click and it'll take you to the completed page, from which you click on the listing and copy the URL (link). The seller ID is in the listing on the right side near the top.

Dear Hyacinth & BeenBurned,

Thanks so much for your great advice. I've already sent a message to the seller asking for more photos, but because it's past midnight over there in the UK, I might only get a reply tomorrow. Once I get the photo, I'll post it here for your review. Hopefully, it's all good. Thanks again! :flowers:

Am I wasting my time looking for a replacement tag on eBay? Seems like I haven’t come across any authentic ones at all...

There ARE a lot of fakes. But another problem is that often it's hard to tell fake from real. There are no details except the font, and while a bad font can prove something's fake, a fake can have a font close enough to real that we can't tell the difference. We don't even know what kind of bag the hangtag came from so how do we know what to compare it to? The fewer details that we can pin down to a specific style or time period, the harder it usually is to authenticate, and that includes small items like wallets, mini skinnys, etc. They're often harder to authenticate than handbags.

Another problem is that some sellers take the hangtags off genuine (and even fake) bags to sell them separately, hoping to sell 2 items instead of one by forcing the handbag buyer to pay extra for a hangtag that should have been part of the bag. That's cheating the buyer and we don't appreciate sellers who do it.

Keep a few known genuine solid metal tags, brass and silver-color, and use those instead of risking buying a fake leather one.

ETA - If Coach still gives out free hangtags, you may want to look into that.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this, Hyacinth.
I only own vintage bags and so I want to find a genuine tag for my new (to me) green station bag that’s missing one. I can’t find tags on the coach site, which is why I’m looking on eBay. Who knew it’d be so tough...! But, with what you’ve noted above, instead of looking online maybe I’ll try asking at a coach store to see if they will sell me one then.. Thanks so much for your help!!!
