People have different comfort levels with their jewelry. I know there is such a thing as insurance, but it cannot replace my wedding ring that I was given at the altar which matches my husbands. Nor can it replace the diamond (albeit of small value now) which he gave me when he asked me to marry him. and I value my anniversary ring and other gifts of jewelry, too. For me, to wear something different when I am on vacation (or even just going to somewhere like the water park for a day) makes me more comfortable than worrying about the real thing getting lost or misplaced or forgotten in a hotel room where there are people I don't know. I like to have a ring on my wedding finger, I have been married for 27 years and I like to LOOK married. Walmart sells plain silver bands for $15 to $20 which will do for this. for other occasions, like for dates while away with my husband and evening stuff, I do like to look as if I am wearing a diamond, even if I have left mine at home. You can get 'diamonds' realistic enough for this purpose cheaply at a lot of places. You can do QVC's diamonique line for around $50, they have a line with silver plated with platinum that looks good (if you stay with the smaller rocks, not the ones big enough for Elizabeth Taylor), they sell CZs set in silver on
amazon.com, evesaddiction.com, overstock.com and a lot of other places that you can get for between $18 and $35. I personally see no point in a fake that costs hundreds of dollars in an expensive setting gold or platinum setting for this purpose for my particular lifestyle, but I do like looking as if I have good jewelry (which I actually do) when out at restaurant at vacation, while not worried every minute about what is happening to my sentimental things when I go down to the beach the next morning.
If anyone has problems with my having used the word 'fake' feel free to switch it in mentally with the words 'diamond simulant' or whatever makes them feel comfortable. Maybe the people who carry fake handbags will come on this board next and request that we refer to them as designer simulants or something like that? But I think this is silly. I can see a lot of reasons to have a diamond that is not real (cost being the first of them, in this economy I can see that a young couple might want to keep that money in their bank account), but I see no reason not to call things what they actually are, when there is no intent to insult or put down a particular person.
