Wowza, MAEML, that's steep! Hmmm, I would re-think buying scarves if that was my case. Just sayin'.

Vigee, the other day I was looking at gloves on h.com Canada, and even w tax, it worked out to be about 4% cheaper (than buying in the US). Think it's Bc the USD is getting stronger!

So, maybe check out the prices of silks on H Canada, and do a mock checkout to see whether it ends up cheaper for you?

Yep, Canadian sales tax sucks!! Back in the day, visitors could claim part of the tax back, but the govt scrapped that now :(

I try to avoid buying anything in Canada when i visit now, unless it's something I can't find in the USA or london

Does the store in Canada not collecting any sales tax? How does that work in Canada? Thanks in advance.

Even with the high taxes, I looked the other day, and it worked out that to buy gloves, it was a little cheaper to buy in Canada than in the US. Must be Bc the USD is getting stronger... I looked for gloves so may not be the same for other things.

That's right. With the 12% Canadian sales tax on the Canadian retail price, I am still only paying 95% of US retail price. Plus free shipping. Exchange rate is really good right now.

Ugh! I will be so peeved if 90cm silks really go up by $50. I started collecting two years ago and the price was $385 at the end of 2012. Then it was $410 in 2013, now $435 in 2014 and if it becomes $485 in 2015, in my mind that's a 26% increase since when I started. Not to mention other format scarves, bags, enamels, and jewelry which is the other stuff I buy. I am really starting to just think I will enjoy my purchases and stop buying new things. I think Hermes may have lost me for good in 2015. The prices are out of control and although their products are lovely, I don't think I can justify their price anymore.

Yeah - for some reason paying $500 with tax for a scarf seems jarring to me. That being said, no matter how many times I tell myself I need to stop buying new H things because the price is absurd, I walk into a boutique and all resolution goes out the window. I just have to stop checking tpf and walking into H stores- that's the only way I can stop!!!

THIS. Good idea, MASEML. I will compare before buying ~ at least that's what I tell myself. Once in the clutches of my lovely SA, my resolve dissolves and my wallet flies open. :D

We must stay strong and silently protest these prices! Except of course for the Las Vegas meet. The enabling will be at an all time high. But after that, I'm going to look away.

If you shop in Alberta, we have no provincial sales tax, only GST. Thus any purchases made here only add 5% tax to your purchase. Makes the math super easy for me, lol... Alberta is the only province with no sales tax, I live in Calgary so I know it first hand. Sorry if this is off topic...

Oh wow! That's amazing! Has this always been the case....should make a trip to Edmonton or Calgary in the summer, never been even though I lived in Canada for 2/3 of my life..

Even with the 13% tax, it's still cheaper to buy 90 silk in Ontario today, and especially even cheaper now with the weakening CDN$.

Canada 90 Silk + 13% Ontario sales tax = C$474.60
US 90 silk + 8% NY sales tax = C$557.55 after exchange rate conversion.

After 2 silks, I can still have money left to buy a twilly. :p

I still don't get why prices in the US will have such a high increase or any increase at all. The Euro is cheaper now compared to the US$ so the imported price to bring H goods into the US will be less now if the item price in Euro is still the same. H USA will just make more profits as a result. I just hope the increase won't be too much and turns a lot of people off. I'm curious how much other luxury brands like Chanel and LV will increase relative to H.

MYH - I agree with you.

I understand price increases but as I mentioned before, the price increase at H far exceeds the pace of inflation. And while I personally won't notice paying an extra $30 or $50 on an item, what galls me is what the increase represents on a percentage basis. My other concern is that in Canada, the price of silks did not go up in 2014 so the Canadian pricing is due for a correction. And if one thinks about where the CAD is relative to the USD, I would not be surprised to hear that the price of a silk 90cm will be close to $500 or maybe even more in Canada. I think this gives me more incentive to slow down my shopping at H (I average out to be a monthly shopper) and enjoy what I currently have. I also reflect on the article posted yesterday from AdWeek - which I thought was great - that talked about how an H scarf is sold every 25 seconds ... maybe that might change to an H scarf being sold every minute now that the worldwide price of H silks is going up LOL.
