There have been a lot of fakes of the various BCA (breast cancer awareness) keychains but this is one of the closest I've seen although when shown side by side to a genuine style 92030 one, the differences are obvious.

Seller of fake: calliecash18

Kicking myself for not taking a picture, but I just saw some nickel strap rivets with an 'X' stamped in the concave side of the rivet. Have you all ever seen this and is it a red flag? It looked as though the rivet setter were shaped like a Phillips screwdriver, leaving an 'X' imprint.

They were in 2 thrift store bags, a '99 Trail bag and a Legacy Zip (maybe 2000?), if that's relevant. I left without them even though it was half price day!

The first picture is a Trail Bag, style number 9955, is that what you saw? The Trail Bag strap doesn't have any rivets.

And I've never seen any strap rivets with the detail you described, but wait for more opinions. It's a shame you didn't make a note of the bags' serial numbers.

I doubt they made the Trail bag in 1999. That seems too late. Maybe you meant the Legacy small flap 9965?

Do you mean the rivets to hold the leather that holds buckles on? Was it like this? This is from my 1999 "C" plant Rambler's Legacy.

Of course you are both right - I've been mistakenly calling the Legacy small flap a Trail bag :noggin: It was definitely 9965.

Whateve, yes, yours is the rivet I saw and in the same place! The 9965 was from a US plant, too, (I think C) but I couldn't remember the last yr that would've been ok in the utter chaos of the 1/2 price sale. Twice someone reached in my cart to 'look at' my stuff!!!

Thank you, thank you, this is so helpful in learning! I'm amazed you made sense of my messy description and really appreciate both your efforts. I promise to take notes/pics going forward :smile1:

Interesting, I've never noticed that before. Note made, photo saved. Thanks, Whateve! :smile1:

You're welcome! By the way, it is a pet peeve of mine that people confuse the Legacy small duffle with the Trail bag!

You're welcome. Honestly, I've never noticed it either! It's usually covered up by the strap. When I was replacing the rivet in my 1989ish shoulder sac, it was really important to me to find a rivet that closely matched the original, which was concave and even all the way around, unlike this one. They probably only used these for a short time, and possibly only in one or two plants.

The Legacy zip with the X rivet was still there today but the 9965 was gone. I'll post more pics over on the AT but it's G0D-9966, so it's in the same ballpark timeframe as Whateve's rivet.

I am also asking about the possible authenticity of a component, in my case the metal clips that attach the strap to a NYC Basic Bag, Whateve kindly authenticated for me yesterday.

The clips should be brass, but they are not. Some type of metal that it's peeling and looks bad. The possibility of the strap belonging to another bag was brought up as well. To me the color and condition (same patina), match both the bag and strap, so just hoping that for some miracle these clips (they say Japan), were made at the time and used by mistake..? (I know.. hoping for too much).

I took one of the leather covered clamps thinking I would find the strap in two pieces so that's the way to change the clips, but it looked like only one piece (perhaps glued), very old and professionally done, nothing that looked like "fixed" at one point.

I will welcome any input and thank you for your time.

I'm not sure there's a definitive answer to your question. Whateve commented here http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-sh...-before-posting-889527-1015.html#post30282852 when she said: "Wow, how do you change out clips? Maybe the strap came off a fake or another brand? The bag itself is fine."

The strap itself looks exactly like the strap on a basic bag that I had but it's possible that the whole strap may have come from a different bag/brand item.

ETA: I actually wonder whether the strap might be from a different bag. Though the color of the strap and bag are a close match, they aren't identical, as shown in this picture more than the others:

The color is soooo close, definitely from another vintage bag. So there is no possibility at all that the clips had been used by Coach at any point, right?

Thank you for your reply :smile1:

Every catalog or ad from Coach that I've ever seen up until around 1996 (when Coach introduced nickel or nickel-plated hardware for some of their briefcases) always mentions Brass or Brass-Plated hardware. It's a part of Coach's history.

I think those narrow bands that hold down the ends of the strap were replaced somewhere along the line, the color is VERY different from both the bag and the strap. It was probably done by a cobbler, and the brass hardware replaced with some sort of plated mystery metal.

Thank you for your input as well Hyacinth, I really appreciate all the info.
I am so glad that you ladies know your stuff, to my untrained (and glasses assisted) eyes, the color is almost identical and because of the use made it (to me), the same at first.

I am going to return it and with luck if still there, get another "interesting" bag they had but not as old. ;)

I agree the brass hardware was replaced and the leather wrapping was done by a cobbler. It appears they aren't finished the way Coach would have done it, turned under into the fold, like in this picture.
