Doctors for Amanda Bynes got a 30-day extension on her psychiatric hold ironically because she's doing better -- and surprisingly it involves a cascade of tears ... TMZ has learned.

We previously reported the Rx cocktail doctors have concocted to treat what appears to be her schizophrenia seems to be working. We're told in the last few days, Amanda has had a breakthrough.

Specifically, she's showing emotion -- something many schizophrenics don't show at all. We're told Amanda was crying on Wednesday and Thursday night, saying she was scared about the Friday court date -- which she did not attend. Patients who cry are viewed as improving, because sadness is typically not in the playbook.

And we're told Amanda spent Thursday night confiding in one of the nurses about her future, saying she's fine and did not need confinement in a hospital. We're told the doctors believe her ability to form clear thoughts is progress.

It seems a little inconsistent that she's doing better yet doctors sounded the alarm that they needed to keep her for an additional 30 days because she was "gravely disabled." We're told doctors insist they were honest about her condition and feel they can help her with more time.

I am kind of cynical with this case. Her whole breakdown and treatment are so well documented in the gossip business, I wonder if it staged. Then she will have a big comeback. I think Britney really did have a coomplete breakdown, and she hasn't looked right ever since, but Amandas has been extremely well publicized.

i really don't think this...i think it's been going on for so long and she is being held involuntarily.

This actually would make sense, at least given all of the rumors/blind items there are about her. I'm also guessing this is a better diagnosis, no? She can work through it with intense therapy and perhaps won't need medication for the rest of her life? (someone who knows more feel free to chime in/correct me)

I doubt that. I believe Amanda is genuinely sick and everything that happened
was well publicized because of the twitter age.

Dan Schneider for Nickelodeon. There's talk about him being a pedophile and doing stuff to child actors. there was also a rumor that he got amanda bynes pregnant and paid for an abortion. Noone will do or say anything because of the $$$ the shows he makes brings in, parents turn a blind eye because of $$$. Just google him..it's disgusting.

Really? I do not think that medical professionals would be holding her in a psych ward as part of some big conspiracy inorder for her to make a comeback. Also its obvious Amanda has severe mental problems, this in no way comes off as some kind of ploy for attention.

Brits meltdown was hugely publicized. I would say it was even more so publicized than Amanda's. Britt had 20 or more paps following her every move everywhere she went at the hieght of her meltdown. The night she was taken to the psych ward it was a huge story on the news and every mag cover. As far as her treatment being publicized I think its the facility she is at. Brit was as UCLA which is pretty good at being tight liped but there were leaks just like with Amanda.
