Am I nuts?Do you save your bags because you're afraid to carry them everyday?

My DH said to me once" why don't you use that bag you just had to have? We made a special trip to find it. " and I replied, " for the same reason you won't drive our new car on gravel roads and you take the old piece of junk trunk to work." He got it. Ha! But now the car isn't so new we just drive it anywhere we wanna go.

What a great thread. I use my bags, but I am careful with them. I carry an Envirosax in case I get caught in a downpour (that said, Balenciaga leather is tougher than it looks) and if I know I am going to have to leave my bag somewhere (I was at a meeting recently where they made me leave my bag at security), I take one that can hold up to being thrown around.

I'm glad to hear that you think Bal leather is tougher than we may think. This may ease my anxiety some! I too carry a second bag for bad weather days.I just went to the Art Institute in Chicago and had my beautiful Rocco inside the Pliage because it was pouring rain. I didn't want to take the damp Pliage in, so I had to check it, and when I pulled the Rocco out of it, the coat check clerk smiled and said "good idea"! She said a lot of people do this.

yeah...i also put my bags in my closet and lock it hahahaaa....every night i will open my closet's door so that my bag will get the cool air from air conditioner. but i use one of my bag every weekend...only my BV and Balenciaga that i never use it anymore...because i adore the BV leather so much and i'm scared that i will "hurt" the leather...i think i should take that babies out sometimes :D

I think because I got some denim transfer on a couple of my Bal's a few years back it made me nervous to carry my bags. Maybe that is why I don't carry my nicer bags so much. I don't know. Plus Bal's are so delicate, they seemed to fall apart so much faster, the tassels split, the corners scuff quickly, some colors fade, etc.

Luckily, I was able to get the denim transfer pretty much all off with Apple cleaner and conditioner.

I understand totally! I have favorite bags that I keep covered and on a special shelf in my closet and I only carry them when I'm feeling a special kind of way! Lol. But I also have favs that I must carry on a regular basis in order for my universe to be right!

I totally do the same thing. I bought my large MK Astor Weekender bag and love it- but have barely used it because it's so pretty. I definitely haven't traveled with it - heaven forbid that it gets dirty! :D

Hey Chilaz, some time has gone by since you bought your Astor; are you still wary of carrying her or has the fear lessened over time! Just curious. I think I'm doin better. Sounds like a rehab program for "scuffmybagaphobia"!

I think most bags look better with a little age and wear. I definitely wear what I have, and I would not buy anything I didn't feel comfortable using. I only use my vintage skins for special occasions because they ARE more delicate, though.

From a pure economics standpoint, a bag you don't use is more expensive than one used frequently. Let's say I spend $2000 on a bag, and I use it 3 days a week, a total of 156 days a year. My cost per use is $12.82. Now let's say I buy a $400 bag and use it once a month. That's $33.33 per use - more than twice as expensive as the $2000 bag in terms of per-use cost. From a strictly economic perspective, your special ocassion bags should have the lowest initial cost and the bags you use daily can be much more expensive. It is the same principal that says your wardrobe staples should be the highest quality and most expensive, and the trendy items should be less expensive - the cost per use does not justify spending more.

So get that Bal out of the closet - it makes it more affordable!
