Am I nuts?Do you save your bags because you're afraid to carry them everyday?

I used to be like this when I was still buying and obessing over bags over two years ago. I would have at least half of my collection still unused or barely used and just sitting in my closet for me to admire in the safety of my bedroom. These days, I have a new mentality and use almost everything that I buy and have bought as soon as I can. There are still a few used/unused bags in my closet but not nearly as many as before, but I do have a lot of bags- like a couple dozen or so. Currently, I am focused on using my most expensive bags that are sturdy and the cheap ones that take the most space. I am looking far ahead and thinking how I'm going to have to move in the next couple years and would need to make good use of my purses as much as I can so that I'll have a bit fewer to carry, lol. I usually carry two at a time since I live in a metro area, so that helps.

Agreed! I used to have so many bags, and I would avoid using my favorites because I didn't want to get them dirty.

I don't have the bags that I used to (sold off everything, minus one that holds sentimental value...but it's just so heavy to carry!!) and I have one that I use every. single. day. Since I purchased it in January, it has gone everywhere with me. It is very much broken in, and the more I use it, the more I love it!

Nothing beats a broken in, well-loved bag.

It's not dirty or torn, just that the handles are much softer, the bag puddles a bit more.

What's the sense of paying $$$$ if they're going to sit in your closet, wasting space and money?

Bags are just a means of transporting our daily essentials around. I'm a longstanding tPF'er and I love both high-end and no-name brands but in the grand scheme of things, they'll burn away when we die.

Life is too short - use and enjoy!

Well said!!!

Reading this post reminded me of my grandmother. When she died we found she had TONS of clothes, shoes, and bags that she had literally never, ever used. My father was so upset when he saw that. It just seemed so sad to him that she had all these things for a lifestyle that she was afraid to live.

USE YOUR BAGS!

Yes, they may get worn, or old, but that's what happens to stuff. Life is not about everything being perfect and pristine forever. Everything changes. We do, the seasons do, the world does. It's the way it was intended to be.

If you really find you can't use them, you should sell them and only buy things that you don't have to worry about from now on. Honestly that's pretty much my philosophy about bags. I never buy anything that I wouldn't be able to easily replace if something happened to it. That's how I determine what my price ceiling is.

Good words to live by. I saw a photo of an older woman and her Hermes birkin was very floppy and very well used. It is the sign of a life that has been LIVED!!

And so true about clothes too that are kept w/o wearing.... I, too, have some nice clothes that I buy and "save." Keep thinking I should just wear my old tops and jeans and save the nice stuff for special days but in fact, those nice clothes are actually travel knits and perfect for wearing every day!

I'm the opposite. I guess I should be more gentle with my bags, but I love using them everyday :D

I found a solution though: instead of buying bags that require gentle use, I try to go for bags that look good when beaten up (I don't have hermes or ysl bags, but I hear those look better when beaten up a little!).

Then, it's a win-win! You can wear it every day and be a little tough on them, but they'll still look good.

I can so identify with this. Last February I bought a Marc Jacobs, it was not the most I have ever spent on a bag - but it was expensive. I brought it home and it sat in my closet in it's white felt bag. On March 21st, I had a heart attack and as I lay in the hospital recovering I had a thought...what if I had died and I never got to wear the Marc Jacobs? And what about all the other bags in the closet I worry about as being too expensive to wear? I can tell you, I have worn every expensive bag in my closet since then and have added a Balenciaga and a new LV since then and worn them the day after I brought them home and loved every minute of it.

I am totally agree with you... bags are bags and I bought them to use them.

Totally agree^!! Nothing beats a broken in much loved bag. I have just purchased a coach tote that will be this, I'm hoping :) I have 7 bags and I can't deal with more than that.:cray: I have 3 coach, 2 fossil, 1 mk, and 1 lv.

That's good advice! I just bought my first Chanel bag and I've been too afraid to use it because I didn't want anything to happen to it. I have just been staring at it in my closet. It's now been sitting in my closet for 6 months!! I'm going to get it out right now!! Thanks!

Haha! I go look at mine in the closet too. I'm getting out my black Work tomorrow though. I'm even going to use one of my fabulous Bal wallets ! Not cured, but getting better...

I do that often...there will always be a few favourites that you pick up without thinking and then "ouch, did I take this bag last time I went to this shop?" and then there's " I am gonna take this with that outfit" and it never happen. i.e. My poor Dior pink butterfly bag.. I will get to you someday..

O.k. As part of my "bag therapy" I got out my Twiggy today, and one of my Bal wallets and switched out of the MJ. . I was going to use my black Work out but I decided it was still sunny and warm and I wanted some color. However this decision was based on a style choice, not fear or guilt so I feel really good! Not only did I do that but I also put my two "bridge bags", bags that I use that are lower priced and I don't worry about, on eBay! Woot! I have made a resolution that I will not buy any more " bridge bags". This way I will only have my fabulous bags to carry, and I feel really good about that. I dug out my LePliage to use to put my bags in when it rains. I'm being pro-active! Now let's see how it goes. I'm going to live in the moment! Ya! Ssssccccaaarrrrreeeeeyyy though.

Nah you're not nuts at all! Some of my primo bags (Prada Fairy, Prada Cavalino (fur)) I only carry for a few days and then switch to something else so they don't get messed up! Further, if I am going to a concert, flying someplace, going to the park - I take some beater type bag like a Prada nylon!

Good on you mate! I fall into trap of bridge bag often myself.."wow, it's so pretty and soooo cheap!" and then it sit next to my good bag for a year or so before its sent away to someone else's closet! Live the moment! ( it's so catchy that we should have a billboard with this)
