Bal has a couple leathers. Moutarde (my money wallet) is lambskin (agneau). I've had a couple of pieces of Bal Goat (chevre) and it's a little different. There are tons of threads in the bal forum explaining the difference between the two. Agneau & Chevre are the most popular leathers Bal has.

i called mary a little bit ago to ask some questions because i am soooo torn right now. :(

i am debating the big mouth vs loud mouth. i like the look of the big mouth more with the zipper pockets instead of the "eyebrows", but the loud mouth has less structure and is wider. ugh! i also really like the look of the pushover too, but the lighter colors are harder to manage than the darker ones (at least for me).

any feedback on big vs loud mouth?

Love the French for common everyday things and colors. Mustard, lambskin, goat. Thanks, Lu. I was just wondering about Bal and the $ vs. 49 Sq. Mi., which really seems very similar and more artisanal and unique for the $, but I don't want to start any wars over it (for those of you reading who might take offense) ;)

I have Bals and a 49 sq. mi. bag. I love both, but I can't say that they seem similar at all, either in style or leather. Just my opinion.

Indiaink, I have to thank you for introducing me to 49 sq. mi. bags. I've been reading your posts, and just had to get one! I just got the beachy keen hobo and I'm looking forward to using it this summer.

Sometimes I carry a full sized wallet, but I'm just as happy with a smaller wallet with my cc and money folded in 1/2. One thing I don't carry is change, so the coin part of a wallet isn't a must for me.....I do have lots of cards - insurance, cc, wallet pictures, etc. so whatever I use has to be able to accomodate about an inch in thinkness. Do you know if the needy would work for this? Thx!
