JUNE “SHOPPING YOUR CLOSET” CHALLENGES

  • Dressing Diversity: Wear bags that differ along a spectrum of style such as four different colors, four different shapes, four different brands, etc.
  • Forgotten Favorites: Wear one of your least used bags at least twice this month
  • Locked Line Up: Enjoy a month of no ins. Refrain from buying any bags or SLG’s.
  • Negate the Neutrals: Help your bag rotation and ability to restyle your bags by focusing your wear on lesser used colors. Resolve not to wear bags in one of your staple colors such as black, brown or taupe for one month.

I don't know if it's as much that I want them gone, as that I'm realistic about how much time and energy and space I have these days. Mind you, I'm not selling flaps and kellys at those prices - seasonal bags and retired styles mostly. Of course, 90% of my bags are retired styles, so :shrugs:

Eight months ago, I went through a dramatic and rapid downsizing in two weeks. (3k sq ft and outbuildings to 1400 apartment with no outside storage) And I'm anticipating moving again in the next four months.

I moved a few totes and suitcases full of stuff that I intended to sell, that was just a little too valuable or sentimental to trash. But I put it off and put it off. And then, in March, a bag that I dearly loved back in '11 showed up on a Japanese resale site. I decided to bribe myself - I could buy it if I sold enough to pay for it. And then I just kept going.

The thing I'd love to get rid of is my and my mother's art collection. We have a few pieces that I still enjoy displaying, but a lot that I'm meh about. And a lot fewer walls too. I consigned the more valuable stuff to an auction house last year. It's the sub-5k stuff that is a challenge to move (both physically and selling-wise)
Getting rid of stuff is not easy. Specially if it was not stuff we bought. I still have piles to go through .

I’m just starting to collect art and have been surprised how expensive of a hobby it is. :wtf: It’s either get diamonds or one art piece. So I HAVE to loooooove it since I’m buying without intention to sell.

I’m going to an art festival this week and hoping to find some great items from little known (and reasonably priced) artists.
The one thing about art that is great is keeps on giving. I buy art and I have never regretted a single purchase. I like to drive out to country to a gallery that has some great artists they work with and buy there. I also purchase friend's pieces that strike me. Have fun and hope you finding a treasure.

Well, I don’t know whether it was PMS hormones, the weather, stress from looking after my Mother on Saturday or What but..
Yesterday (12th), I Finally ended my clothing desert..

I bought 20 pairs of Skins black leggings.
The Only leggings which actually fit me (I have no hips and long legs) are Skins and CW-X, I mainly wear Skins..

They are usually £110- £130, but were reduced(not seconds or faulty) to £9.99, so I stocked up..these will keep me going for a while..

Unfortunately now I’ve started clothes shopping, I may continue..
It is something you will actually use at a great price. Don't stress over it.

I’ve now just received a telephone call with an appointment for the dreaded hysteroscopy -Friday 30th May..
My Dad got confused and thought I was having an actual hysterectomy -the hysteroscopy sounds bad enough..

This has been a very eventful month, parties, a funeral, shopping, now this!
I went to Windsor yesterday with my gf and bought him a beautiful birthday card, with a message which said everything I feel about him-he’s absolutely the best Father/husband ever..
I don’t think my Mum would have expected him to sacrifice absolutely everything for her-he’s one in a million.

Unfortunately, having ordered the 20 pairs of leggings, I now feel like asking my gf to accompany me to Central London to go clothes shopping, but I’m spending my money elsewhere, and also will be shopping when I go on holiday later this year..
Once she recovers from her broken heart we’ll have a day out shopping together somewhere nice.

Make a budget and stick to it. I stress shop but always stay in budget so no guilt afterwards. Also make room in your closets, otherwise you will be stressed from the clutter.

I really like the Prada Galleria, especially the mini size. What colors are you considering for a summer bag? I’ve been eyeing a few Celine bags as well as some top handle satchel style bags for everyday wear but really haven’t actively researched or pursued anything.

You look fabulous, love that outfit (and the bag).
I haven’t been around much what with juggling house guests as well as endless house repairs, but thinking of you and sending wishes for good health and speedy recovery to your DH.

@Cookiefiend, love your tote in champagne!:flowers:
@dcooney4, that’s a perfect summer bag you have there.:heart:
@cecchetti, virtual hugs to you, I know the past few months haven’t been easy for you.:hugs:
@Bag peace, I know I am very behind with this, but hope you’re doing well. Loved the Mulberry bag you posted, and I think it’s lovely that your friend gifted you some goodies. Enjoy them without hesitation, the bags were meant to be yours.
My apologies if I have missed any important updates in this thread, I haven’t been very good at keeping up in the past few months, hope to do better over the summer.
I’m thinking a small Cameo or possibly the Talco for the Prada Galleria. Which functional Celine bags are you considering? I find I really like how the Galleria has zipped compartments, functional slip and zip pockets and handles plus an optional shoulder strap. I’d love to learn of any other bags with similar functionality.

I thought you made it past your ban period successfully. Why would it be unfortunate for you to buy other pretty things that you may need?

It’s sooooo much easier for me to get rid of things I didn’t buy because I didn’t spend the money nor do I have any buyer’s regret. My issue is getting rid of the ridiculous “what if” scenarios I have that make me keep some things. Like “What if I have a party for 12 and need shrimp forks?” I still struggle to stay rooted in post Covid, post brain surgery, post previous career realities. My life is simpler now by design but I still have old habits that are certainly dying hard.

Thanks for the encouragement! I really want to support smaller local artists that don’t have a national stage on which to promote their art. It’s win win as I help them financially and they help me have a unique piece of beauty.

That being said, I discovered an oil painting I would have loved to have but it’s $75,000 dollars. :faint: :panic::tdown: Happily the artist release a limited number of signed and numbered prints for $3000 - so I scooped one up. I’m developing a gallery wall for the main wall in my great room and it will look lovely there.

******

I purchased a preloved handbag that I was excited about - a white Gucci 1970 hobo bag. Unfortunately there was more wear than reported and it just looked tired so I returned it. I feel ok about that because I really don’t need any more bags and definitely didn’t need that one. I’m better off shopping my closet. I feel good that I’m still at only 2 purchases for the year.

You are not alone!

I haven't been acting mindfully at all over the last few days and bought clothes I do not need, but which make me happy.
On Sunday I went to a fleemarket and came home with a dress, a vintage clutch and 2 pairs of shoes. ( One pair was gifted to me, because it needs a small repair.)
Today I treated myself to another visit to the local church charity shop and continued the shopping....

I ' m giddy with joy. They invited me to browse the storage room! Yippeeh!
I think this means I have reached the equivalent of " building a relationship with a luxury SA" .

I was worried about not shopping mindfully in the charity shop and simply asked them If it was OK to shop for fun and not for need. ( I think people in need are given the clothes for free there.)
I do not want to take items away from people in need. They explained they were getting more donations than demand and I am welcome to shop as much as I like. Actually they are happy about every sale.

So far I ' ve been failing to do the challenges for this month.
My every day bag has been the versatile brown vintage tote that isn't much of a typical spring bag.

Today I first moved my things into my painted big kisslock clutch, but left it at home in the end, because it felt impractical to carry for going treasure hunting. Instead I turned to my staple mustard patent New Lock bag. ( Practical and flies under the radar. ) Oops.

Both beautiful Prada colors! Hope you find one soon and wear it this summer.

I’m looking at the Celine box bag in storm, red or dark green. It’s not as functional for me as a top handle satchel but it’s one I’ve wanted for a very long time so it’s just a matter of finding the right one since it’s discontinued.

The other Celine bag is the luggage bag. I don’t want the nano size as I think this bag looks better in the slightly larger size and smooth leather. I’m still not entirely sold on it though because of the absence of a shoulder strap. Additionally I still need to research the sizes and colors.

The following bags are the ones I’ve been considering for daily errands, running around the town functionality. Most of them have two top handles, a zip or snap closure, and are small to medium sized.
Fendi Peekaboo, Fendi mini 3Jours, Antigona soft or regular Antigona mini, Gucci horsebit top handle. Also, some older LV bags but some don’t have an accompanying shoulder strap which is essential: Manhattan pm, Siena, Ribera and Sarria (mini size) and some of these are discontinued older styles. Possibly Sac du jour but only in the right color and size. I’ve probably forgotten something but these are the ones off the top of my head.

So far, all of these bags have only been floating around in my head but I haven’t done anything about trying to research further or acquire them. Obviously it’s a long list and I need to refine it to just two or three bags at some point.

Your purchases sound like so much fun-and make me feel better-I was definitely hormonal (!) when I bought the leggings, although I will definitely wear them..but now I want More new clothes!❤️

Enjoy your new dress and other clothes-and any sewing you may be doing xx!

@Sparkletastic
Yes, I’d long finished my ban, but I was hoping to end it with something more exciting than leggings, and not expecting to want to rush out and buy more clothes!

Your new art hobby sounds very interesting…I became friends with a local artist years ago (he’s passed away now)- I gave him one of my (useless) paintings and he gave me one of his, which I gifted to my parents -I’ve no idea what it’s worth.
The oil painting must have been amazing!

The only reason I stopped buying art is that I ran out of space to display it. I even have an oil painting on the garage wall! I have a few small spaces I could fit something but I don't want it to look too busy.

We used to go to art shows to buy from local artists. When I was very young, a gallery had a special to get people interested in art. I can't remember if it was $500 or $1000 but you could get 3 pieces for it. That was a lot of money back then (it sort of still is.) That was how I got started.

A few of the pieces I have hanging are my own paintings and my mother's. I also inherited some art from my parents.

I love how you’re being thoughtful and considered as you contemplate getting a new bag. I’m sure that will mean you end up with something perfect.

I’d like to learn more about the functionality of the Celine Belt Bag as I’ve always liked the look. I’m also considering getting a Fendi By the Way in a light color. I loved the functionality of mine but the snap on the one I had kept pulling my hair out. I bought one for my daughter and she never had that issue. So I’m willing to take the plunge again if I can find one in great condition sans the tail.

You ended your ban with a practical and desired item. J think that’s better than exciting and perhaps rarely used.

I’m having fun playing at this art hobby. And the oil was truly amazing, I just have no budget for a $75k piece.
The only reason I stopped buying art is that I ran out of space to display it. I even have an oil painting on the garage wall! I have a few small spaces I could fit something but I don't want it to look too busy.

I have two of my son’s works on display. He’s truly talented so it makes me proud that people will ask me about his works even over that of established artists. But his live is IT / technology. So that’s the path he pursues professionally.

I wish my family had collected art. But they were building a business and didn’t have the spare funds to even think about it.

Make a budget and stick to it. I stress shop but always stay in budget so no guilt afterwards. Also make room in your closets, otherwise you will be stressed from the clutter.
The budget I have-I have set an annual clothing budget since I was 19(obviously it has gone up since then!)- although often I go over it.

Making room in my closet atm isn’t so easy, as there’s nothing I want to clear right now-there will be by the end of summer.

Thank you for your advice!❤️

I don't know whether silver says Spring. I think most of my bags are years round bar my Gucci tote or pale Paul Smith pink satchel.

I literally had no time to get ready this morning and I am going from hosting a Webinar (which was already postponed twice) to chairing a conference this evening. With literally no time to get ready I had to find a bag that said fashion jewellery and business all in one.

I don't think the Le City is the best quality bag I have, but it's certainly getting worn a lot. .
