2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

Likewise. I am very close to my original (pre-pandemic) weight, but not quite there yet. Funnily enough, some of the clothes that I had stored and returned to are not fitting quite the same way they did pre-pandemic. I suppose I could get them tailored but I think I'll just wait. We are having some work done on the house, nothing major, but still disruptive enough that it has taken time and energy away from shopping.

Speaking of fall fashion, I bought a trench coat last season, mostly to see if I will get enough wear out of it (with thoughts of maybe getting a Burberry trench coat down the line if I get enough use out of it). Well, I barely wore it at all, so this season, I will be trying it again but I have a feeling the trench coat is not my favorite in terms of fall outerwear.

Question for everyone -- what is your favorite item of outerwear, when it comes to fall fashion? Mine is definitely a wool blazer or coat. I have enough and more of them to take me through the entire season. In fact, I need to plan more outings in order to give them an airing.
Great question. Coats, boots, cashmere mufflers and gloves! I’m out with the dog in all weathers and I like the feeling of being impregnable against anything the weather can do. My favourite walking coat is waxed cotton lined in thick faux fur, with a big hood also lined in the faux fur. It wasn’t expensive but looks like it should be and it’s extremely warm. Paw prints wipe off and it also has well thought out pockets which I think are often missing on women’s things.
I have lots of mufflers in cashmere and yak wool. The dark green is Mulberry, the green/grey Isabel Marant (cashmere + yak), the black is Denis Colomb (yak) and the Burberry scarf was a present eons ago. It goes in the washing machine on the wool cycle without issue and is a far better quality cashmere than my more recent Burberry scarves.

I love gloves too.

The purple ones are a French brand (I forget which) and the brown are Dents. Dents are great value IMO.
I’m presently hovering over some Trickers boots (reduced in the sales), but I don’t really *need* them. We’ll see how that goes

I love a wool coat too! Especially flared or A line ones. I was just missing this coat I used to have after being reminded of it by an old picture someone sent me. I would like to find another coat like it, if anyone has leads. I got that one from Overstock.

A waxed cotton walking coat sounds like a great wardrobe staple for the transitional seasons. Yours sounds very well made. I love well placed pockets too, and often use them for things like keys or gloves. This is something I could see adding to a fall shopping list, as I don't think I have anything like it.

You have some lovely and cozy cashmere and wool mufflers, and my particular favorite is the Isabel Marant one. Yes, sadly, many items have not quite maintained the quality of earlier years. This is true of not just clothing but also other items like household appliances for instance (I can attest to this after having ended up purchasing a new dishwasher recently even though my older one was just a few years old.)

Your gloves are gorgeous! There is something so luxurious about soft, beautiful, well-made leather gloves. As someone whose hands get perpetually cold in the cooler months, I can say that gloves are the one item of outerwear that I need with me all the time as soon as the weather cools down. Mine are all currently still in storage bins.

I love this coat, gorgeous color, and also love how you've styled this. Do you remember who made this coat? You could search the same brand to see if they've come out with something similar. Sometimes, brands will repeat colors and styles over the years. Are you looking for a similar color as well as style of coat?
My favorite outer wear are my boots.
Good boots are everything in the colder months!

My dishwasher is also on the blink. I keep thinking every wash is going to be its last. But I can’t get excited about buying a new one. I did some measuring and had a quick look a few weeks ago, but ran out of enthusiasm. Meanwhile it limps along. It’s one of those jobs that’ll happen when my hand is forced
Gloves are lovely, what else can you buy that’s hand sewn, made of tactile luxury materials in loads of colours, that doesn’t cost a fortune?!

Yes, I have little enthusiasm when it comes to purchasing appliances, and my dishwasher purchase was quite quick and without any extensive research, but after hand washing my dishes for a bit, I have come to have a renewed appreciation for these appliances. My clothes washing machine conked out right in the middle of the pandemic when numbers were very high. Handwashing clothes was the worst! I ended up getting a handyman in, and luckily, it was a quick repair and not a replacement.

When our dishwasher died several years ago, the repairman said he could get us a new one the next day. As I had a sink full of dirty dishes and didn't want to wait, we agreed. I'm sure we overpaid for the dishwasher he put it and we never got the paperwork so we wouldn't have been able to do a warranty claim. It wasn't a great dishwasher; never failed completely but had issues off and on with grease on the dishes, and I'm glad we finally were able to replace it when we remodeled. I still didn't get my first choice but the one we got works well, and I love that third level.

We were going out of town for a few days so I was doing one final load of laundry. With all the clothes and water in the washing machine, the agitation didn't begin and it kind of smelled like something was burning. The absolute worst is to have a tub full of wet dirty clothing! I turned it off for a little while, then came back and picked a different cycle and thankfully it worked. I've done two loads since then with no problems but I'm so worried that I fill the washer up with water and wait for it to start working before I add the clothes. I guess that is what you are supposed to do anyway but it's not what I'm used to. A few years ago something failed on our washing machine. The repairman couldn't get the part and said if we got the part someplace else, they weren't allowed to install it due to warranty issues but he showed me how to install it. I bought it from ebay for about $6 and installed it myself. That gave me a great sense of accomplishment! The washer is about 20 years old but the dryer is close to 40.

I love wool coats but my favorite outerwear item is a down coat with a hood. It's like being wrapped in a soft warm cloud. It doesn't get super cold or rainy where I live, but you get used to local temperatures so I'm freezing when it drops below 65 F. I have this ridiculous looking down coat that I use as a robe when the house gets too cold.

I had a trench I liked but rarely wore because I'm no good with umbrellas so my rainwear needs a hood.

I also love my cashmere lined leather gloves and my fur lined Uggs.

Not a surprise, but a trench or blazer. My “I keep buying them but never wear them” outerwear piece is a leather jacket. The weather isn’t right half the time and then I reach for something else…

Oh no, so glad you have a new dishwasher. Sounds like your older one was not working efficiently. I never knew you're supposed to clean out the filter at the base of the dishwasher periodically. I just learnt about it recently. All these years of using a dishwasher and never knowing that! I watched some videos online, and henceforth will be cleaning the filter every month or so to keep it working well. But yeah, handymen don't always give you the best advice. Our very first dishwasher (I have changed twice since that one) worked perfectly for several years. Eventually, the edges of the basket -- think they're called tines but not sure -- wore out and my handyman told me to just replace the entire dishwasher! Wish I hadn't listened to him since the dishwasher was running just fine.
Good for you for installing that part in your washer! Hope you continue to enjoy your washer and dryer for many more years!

I actually prefer an umbrella, especially the mid-sized ones because they keep out the rain better than a hood. The only problem is that I keep losing/forgetting them because I'm absent-minded, and have to keep buying new ones. Your down coat sounds so cozy!

I have this issue with leather jackets too! I have a couple of jackets and both of mine are nice brands but not premier designer. At the back of my mind, I have been wanting to get another one, maybe from Gucci, but my weight needs to stop fluctuating before I add any new clothes. I'm getting there, but want to give it several more months before any purchases.

Jackets, coats and blazers are more fun in the fall, but outerwear is not as much fun from a fashion standpoint when it gets really cold in winter, and one is all bundled up. Or maybe I just get tired of the cold. But autumn allows for more fun fashion options as well as layering, so I always hope for a long fall season and a short winter!

Thanks! Unfortunately I don't remember the maker, really should have taken note of it! I am looking for a similar style, in any fun color. Or white. Blue, white, red, pink, yellow, green, but not brown, black or navy. The thing about that coat is that it was great quality. I know it was less than $200 because I was a student when I bought it and didn't have a bunch of money, it was probably less than $150. But it had a good weight to it, and I kept it until basically I was a little too fat for it and also it had gotten dingy after about a decade, lol. But it's hard to find a coat that has such a good weight to it. I was living in Chicago at the time, so I knew the difference between a good coat and a cheap one!

Favorite fall outerware: Leather jackets, or long (Calf/ankle length) sweater jackets.
When I was buying my leather jacket some years ago, I was planning to get a moto jacket, but the SA steered me towards a different style leather jacket with no collar. Perhaps she thought the moto jacket was too edgy a style for me? I have often wondered, and wish I had asked her. Anyway, today, I actually think the style of leather jacket I like the most is one with a collar and more of a blazer style. Do you have a specific style you like? It's interesting how each style of leather jacket has a vibe of its own.
I'm a sucker for chunky sweaters, warm scarves and leather pants.
I'm with you, love a chunky sweater, even though they do occupy a lot of space in the closet. That's a very chic combo -- sleek leather pants and chunky sweater (like a Fisherman sweater).

It does sound like a great find! I would check J Crew as the season progresses. I've bought nice, wool coats that are substantial and warm, and not light weight from them in the past (I still have them and use them). A lot of stores, both online and brick and mortar, are just starting to put out their coats and jackets in anticipation of the fall season, so I would keep on the lookout as the summer winds down, and more options are offered.

I love leather jackets as well!
I have 4 atm, but I do wear them..I had my first one at 16, although my Mum thought it was inappropriate -despite being a blazer rather than a biker.
I’ll wear them until I’m too old to wear one!
