2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

What do you do with clothing that is good but doesn't fit your current size? Does it stay in your closet, or do you store it elsewhere?
The only thing I keep is one size up in blue jeans - I think I have 4 pairs in the lower closet (where I keep my formal clothing), everything else I donate.
I feel a lot more disorganised than most of you.

BV and Bals

I only have one Bag bag (more Nicolas Ghesquière RTW though)
It's the mirrored leather silver Bowler/Bowling from a Holiday collection (Madeline (rag doll) is sitting behind it in the pic) This is like a Kering family bag pic, so take no notice of the SLP/YSL or Gucci

Bal notes:
There are no cooler bags out there, most of the Bag bags I see are on fashion insiders - still, even now.
I like the Hourglass, but I don't really like the 'B' dangle.

I have these and another 2 BVs.
Calf Navy Roma, Nero lamb hobo (used to be called a Knot hobo - now basically a non-woven Jodie) Gunmetal cervo hobo and python Poupre tote.
I also have a woven Ebano tote and very vintage hobo in greens/browns (no idea where the pics have gone).

BV notes:
I think BVs are brilliant for the extremities of my life. Perfect for work (totes) and perfect for holiday (hobos). For me, BV make the quintessential sophisticated work tote, not too formal/stuffy, and also the best hobos.
I don't usually like BVs with any hardware, the gunmetal hw on Roma and the python tote are fine, as it the cute look of the hw on the new Adiamo and all the Knot clutches (which I didn't have) but otherwise I like minimal flash on BV.
wow - gorgeous bags!

I love questions like these!

My closet is also arranged by color and type of item.
Skirts - dressy - light to dark, casual - light to dark.
Blouses - each color is arranged light to dark, sleeveless to long sleeve.
Dresses - light to dark (dresses are behind blouses because that part of the closet has the length)
Trousers (anything not blue jeans) - light to dark
Blue jeans - light to dark
Jackets - light to dark
Comfy clothes - light to dark
Shorts - light to dark
Casual shirts - light to dark
Golf clothing - long shirts, sleeveless shirts, skorts

Typing that all out made me think "holy moly - that's a lot!"
That’s exactly how mine is done.LOL

I’m a lot like this, too. I move clothes in and out of my closet two times per year based on season, but items are stored by length (pant, sleeve, you name it), then I go by color (light to dark). One half of my dresser is spring/summer, while the other half is fall/winter. I have a lingerie chest which holds, well, lingerie, in addition to swimwear (sunnies are stored in that drawer, too), running clothes and lululemon shorts that I wear when not working out. (Am I weird for keeping a separate set just for working out?)

ETA: I no longer hang onto clothes that don’t fit, either due to weight gain, or weight loss. As someone whose size and shape have changed every so many years, I’ve found that old styles no longer seem to work for me when I’m back to some old weight. Or styles have changed and things seem dated. If I feel like I must save for a bit (rare), items that don’t currently work for me are moved to a bin in the basement so ans to be out of my usable space. That said, I do have a pair of Citizens of Humanity jeans (do they even exist anymore?) that I can’t seem to part with. They’re over 10 years old at this point and I first gained, then lost, weight since I bought them, so they’re not a perfect fit. But still they stay… There was an article in WaPo today about loose pants on women (think 90s boxers peeking out of pants for men), so maybe I’ll finally be on trend?

Good point, good reminder.

I still have Summer break to get through and so it's hard to think about Sep yet . However, that's when I'll have a little more time to look through things.

Wardrobe: Mostly, I just keep mine the way it is for fear I'll forget where something is.

I'm determined to make more of my more expensive jackets next reason. I've separated them (taken them out from under bigger coat and jackets) and put them into a separate wardrobe. So far that's my only nod to 'good intentions going forward'.

The only changes I always make are changing my bag and scarf rotation. I don't put my scarves away until they're all washed, bags don't get put away until cleaned and reconditioned (or spa'd if that's an option).

Yes, I've been thinking about fall as well. I took a look at my wardrobe. There's definitely some spots I'd like to fill.

I'd love to find an oversized kitshy vintage sweater but only in cotton, ramie or rayon. Something fall related. While I love silk blends I find that mine get dirty so easily.

I'd also love to find a denim stretch waist midi ~ maxi skirt with contrast stitching. I prefer a darker wash. I wouldn't mind black denim either.

I have more ideas but I have to get to work!!

Congratulations !
I’d like to find a new tailored suit-except I’m on a short self imposed clothing ban!
I’ve got a trip to Harrods booked in early October and May crack, I don’t know…there’s only so much bedding I can buy…

Wear them in good health!xx

I am holding off any major closet renewal until I feel like my size has stabilized. I have lost 5 pounds so far. I am moving very slowly in the right direction. Just going to grab a few classic pieces to tide me over. I need to find a good blazer/ jacket that fits my shoulders and is long enough for my torso.
Likewise. I am very close to my original (pre-pandemic) weight, but not quite there yet. Funnily enough, some of the clothes that I had stored and returned to are not fitting quite the same way they did pre-pandemic. I suppose I could get them tailored but I think I'll just wait. We are having some work done on the house, nothing major, but still disruptive enough that it has taken time and energy away from shopping.

Speaking of fall fashion, I bought a trench coat last season, mostly to see if I will get enough wear out of it (with thoughts of maybe getting a Burberry trench coat down the line if I get enough use out of it). Well, I barely wore it at all, so this season, I will be trying it again but I have a feeling the trench coat is not my favorite in terms of fall outerwear.

Question for everyone -- what is your favorite item of outerwear, when it comes to fall fashion? Mine is definitely a wool blazer or coat. I have enough and more of them to take me through the entire season. In fact, I need to plan more outings in order to give them an airing.

I don’t drive, and love walking, and the U.K. winters can be cold and wet, so my favourite winter outerwear is a shearling coat -next winter I’m planning a new bespoke one.
I have a full length curly one, and a Sandro navy jacket which is very warm in shearling, but neither have a hood..I’ve seen one in Florence with a hood and saved the picture, which I’ll get copied to fit me.

They last for years and are super warm-great for being outside in the winter.
Inside I like wool blazers.

Outerwear. I love coats. It used to be mainly pea coats (those all had to be navy blue) . But really all coats. Some years trench coats (leather, denim, twill, Jersey, silk). Some years puffy (leather, nylon, wool). car length, long, knee length dusters, cashmere, vicuna etc. . . .plaid, window pane, leopard, camo, abstract, plus tie dye (one of my favorites)

a sportsjacket isn’t exactly outerwear to me. But, I love them too. Leather, fur, boucle, flat hard finish, silk taffeta, denim. . . I collected navy, midnight blue, and black for years, until DH said enough, if you continue, perhaps branch out (so now I have shades of charcoal gray and other things). I also adored denim jackets, safari jackets, hunting style jackets, camp jackets.

I don’t really do polka dots (unless they are tonal) or synthetic fur, and currently my fur is vintage deadstock, re tailored, or from my family.

next to coats, I love charcoal gray trousers. Bc if most of your jackets and pea coats are navy, and you spend half your life unable to fit into your stash of skinny denim jeans, then charcoal pants are the next horizon.

my least favorite item are white button down shirts. . . Bc they can look really cheap (unless they are not).
Ans if you happen to be on the chunky side of slim, the standard white button down is not your friend.

I love pea coats! And I share your love for navy blue. I have short wool coats in a few different colors -- moss green, burgundy (supposed to be big this fall, along with red), navy and red, but I will admit dark blue is my go to color. It just seems right for almost any occasion.
Tie dye sounds interesting -- I don't think I have seen a coat in tie dye. Off to search for one.

Sports jackets are on the lighter side, and like cardigans, I am not sure if they would count as outerwear unless one lived in a place that was hot all year, with just a month or two of cooler "sweater" weather.

Charcoal gray trousers sound fab. I think I need a pair of charcoal gray trousers -- can't believe I don't have any.
I have happily put away all my skinny jeans and have fully embraced the straight leg and other flare style jeans for the season!

As for white button down shirts, I never understood why every fashion blogger recommends them because they are not always the easiest items to style. I actually prefer wearing them in the summer over jeans or trousers, especially in a nice eyelet fabric, or with some little details that set them apart a bit. I have one or two, and must admit they're probably the least worn items in my closet.

The winters here can be cold and wet too, and good footwear is another important requirement in the colder months. Your shearling coat sounds lovely and warm. I have a puffer coat with a hood for the really cold, wintry and wet days, but I must admit I am often running around without wearing the hood unless it is really pouring.
