OMG! I’ve mentioned I evaluate my bags each year in September to decide what I should keep. If I haven’t worn it at least 6 months in the year, I sell it. (unless it’s a special use bag or there is another VERY good reason for me not having used it.)

Well, I was puttering around in the closet and talking out loud fairly randomly to Mr. S about my bags and what I’ve worn (He was watching TV. I really thought he was pleasantly half listening - if that, LOL! - to my chatter.)

All of a sudden he says “About 3/4 of the year is gone. What bags haven’t you worn at least 4ish times?”

I looked at my list and saw that there were 8 bags fitting that criteria which he encouraged me to pull out so he could see which ones they were.

The next 20 minutes are a haze of chaos, mayhem and generalized fashion trauma :whut: as he asked me pointed questions about why I wasn’t wearing the bags, whether I really loved the bags and if there were better bags I could replace them with. :faint: He said he was tired of seeing a few just sit there and dared even tell me one bag is just “homely”.

Soooooo...at the end of this inquisition “we” decided to get rid of 7 of the bags. And, I’ve been given the mission to replace them with a few bags I actually love and will use.

But, er... I don’t have a wish list of bags right now. Which is why I hadn’t bought anything. So I’m down to 22 bags and feeling a little naked. :panic: No idea what I’m gonna do next. LOL!
Spark,

I love and fear Mr. S at the same time. To have spouse that pays attention and helps with bag/wardrobe decisions is ideal. However the questions and forcing to reconcile the wardrobe would drive my crazy.. I would be so scared his reasoning would be so good and force my hand on items I loved.

Which bags are on the chopping block

Does anyone have any thoughts about the Reed Krakoff boxer bag?

I know this question is like 7 years too late. But just wondering if anyone remembers it or had one....
Hi HBG, I remember these bags. I never owned one. I did admire the look of Reed Krackoff Boxer bags. I had a great conversation at a cocktail party with a Boxer owner. She let me try the bag on. I recall it was quite heavy. Hope it helps.

Sorry forgot about the jewellery, not on purpose

This is a reissue necklace of a vintage Amoeba piece by Henning Koppel for Georg Jensen (his 100 Birthday this year had he lived). There is a bracelet too but a bit big on me, could get annoying. The necklace is not cheap and it is heavy but it's pretty amazing too. The pic is of me trying it on.

I bought quite a lot of Georg Jensen in silver and/or yg recently naughty naughty, I'm having a necklace made by Asprey to match some earrings, again an old design. I think I kept buying more and more from GJ because the waiting for Aspey was making me 'hungry'

You have the best accessories! That’s really cool.

Can’t wait to see your Asprey items!

I think we called this Sloane style (Lady Diana (Princess Diana) was a Sloane (Ranger) before she turned to fashion to express herself). They also had a thing for long full skirts, pearls and blouses though.

Basically, what rich people wear for casual?

So Gucci loafers are preppy? Oh dear ha ha. How ca I wear them so they're not preppy?

When I think of polo and tennis shirts we have whole subcultures that use them too. Mods, skinheads and casuals, just with other things. Every man wears them where I am right now, rich or not, young with ultra skinnies and a TAN, older with a huge white new car, flash watch and a TAN, but none of them are preppy (I need to look at their shoes ha ha).

Hahaha, yes, what rich people wear for casual, Lol! But when I was a teenager, it wasn’t just for rich people, it was a real across-the-board trend. I would call that photo of Lady Di preppy as well.

Don’t worry about your Gucci loafers. They are much too stylish and edgy to count as preppy. Anyone remember Bass Weejuns? Again, I did a search to find a photo to make my point, and had an “OMG, they still make these!” moment. :P

When I was on my Tokyo trip last week, 1 of my friends I’m traveling with was looking for Haruta loafers (ladies). I can’t remember very well but she said this was on trend when we were younger. Luckily we found a department store carrying the brand. It’s this kind:
IMG_1529374594.839902.jpg

Me too, always have, but dithered and dithered. About a year ago I noticed my had friends were fellow lovers, aficionados and devotees and and I just realised I had to get on with it and buy all the pieces (one by one) I had admired from afar for so long, a real investment in style.

Anyone else had that had 'I don't care care whether I'm worth it (or think I'm worth it) I'm going for it anyway'?

Seriously, there comes a time where I had to start to act like the person I always wanted to be or just stay wishing forever. It doesn't happen overnight, revolution is a slow process, takes huge effort, vision, planning and is totally dangerous ;) .

Hmmm ... well, I probably have a moment like that every time I spend 4 figures on myself! You’re right, at some
point you have to just do it rather than thinking about it. I think this is true in many areas of life, not just fashion and style. But it’s a process. I’m still figuring out what works for me.

I remember these bags! I never owned one — I remember liking the style but something about the function didn’t work for me. From what I recall, the quality was good. I was disappointed when RK went under.

I’m going back and feeling like I somehow missed a bunch of posts.
I love hearing your thought process and wish I'd thought more before starting adding in lots of bags in the past year. I do love them all, but now I'm learning which I prefer to actually use. When I love a style, I don't mind having multiples in a variety of colors. It just goes with my style, but I do want variety too.
Multiples are so easy. And when I love a bag, I love it. I’m just trying to push myself a little.
Going back home from a weekend getaway. MM Juliet in cobblestone Tuscania on my lap. I Love this bag. It’s so easy and relax. I’m glad I ordered it when they still have this leather.

@vink. I love the texture on your clothes. Very pretty!
Thanks @essiedub and @spark for your input. I think I knew the second I saw this listing that it was something I would adore and something I haven't stopped thinking about and occasionally stalking for almost a decade but in an even better color... But the price was *just* high enough that I thought maybe I could and should be good and stay on ban island even through an upcoming birthday.... But now that it was listed again at a significantly lower price (90% off retail and smack in the price range I prefer to stay in), I don't have any doubts about it. It's definitely going to be my birthday pressie from my mom (who insists every year that I pick something fun for myself and buy it on her card).

And my husband just knows that I'm kind of a shopping addict and is trying to save me from myself! But yeah seriously I need to finish my thesis and graduate and get a salary (and off this ridiculous grad stipend) and then my husband won't care at all about my shopping habits. He only cares nowadays if I suddenly spend about 10 times the normal amount and he can't help but notice, which is what half of April sick as a dog with the flu and entertainment via online shopping did to our budget. You should have seen the sheer volume of purchases in 2015 when I had a whole summer on bedrest! Ha!
Yay! You got it. When will you reveal what it is?????
Ha ha you know me well!!!

I have already bought an H bag this year (though pre-loved) and therefore strictly do not even deserve another bag of any description at all.

I had a need for an H bag to go from casual to formal, something I could use for work. The question was GP or DS and the GP won. However, through my research and the up-close admiration of 2 stylish friends' DSs I have to say it is more like the GP came first but I still love the DS.

The Re(belle) is 'another kettle of fish'. If it wasn't neutral python/suede lining I'm not sure I'd go for it (I don't do micro-fibre lining anything). I am charmed by the mini feline hw which echos both Gucci jewellery and RTW I have already and as someone else said it doesn't look like Gucci of the last 3 'mad' years (in which I have not bought a single Gucci bag).

I feel like a have enough structured bags, I want to go back to that side of me that does Modern vintage more (mid-century modern interior but wearing). My late teens were so stealth (and dark) kinda beatnik but really smart and lots of textures minimal colours and then POP bright. I even want to get back to the weight I was happiest at as a dancer and do yoga again. I need to not only get my life under control but look like I do too.

I'm thinking both the Rebelle or DS would actually fit in with collection, same vibe as say my beautiful python Catherine (looks a bit like a Bolide, but 40cm) and other minimal luxe skin/casual vibe bags. In a way Clemence would be a different skin even though it's bovine, the texture and the way it moves makes it luxe (I have not a single bag in that leather yet but I'm a big fan for the right bag). I know the Clemence is the heaviest leather, Sikkim leather is also very nice but I'd just like a chewy leather this time. Anyway, it's all balls in the air atm because as I said already it's one bag past my quota for 2018. I have some important-to-me (non-Cartier/non-VCA) jewellery coming soon too so leaving the Rebelle too long may mean missing out but similarly the Ambre-Gold DS is seasonal.

Everyone's opinions would be welcome.
I agree with vink’s assessment. The Rebelle fits what I’ve seen of your style and is an amazing bag. The H will be around and can be gotten next year. Go for the Gucci.
ooh thanks for this analysis papertiger. I have thought about the Victoria but never noticed the handles..yes no rolled handle on a carryon:tdown:. Plus everyone has heard about my flat handle tote saga. As far as carry-ons, Last time I traveled, I tried to be cute with a large vintage Gucci carry-on duffel (vs. my trusty rolling Hartmann). Never again. :cursing:Wheels were invented for a reason.
LOL! Yes, wheeled luggage is a god send!!

STUNNING!!! Jewelry always trumps bags! :yahoo:
That’s really surprising about backpacks. I would think in today’s day and age, a backpack would be fine as long as it didn’t look too collegiate or rugged. My DH just got a Tumi backpack that he’s going to use for business travel — please don’t tell me the rules are still different for women on this!

Ditto on the preppy stuff — I can’t go there either! — and the body stuff shifting to places it doesn’t belong! My problem is that after 10 years of chronic pain that was finally properly diagnosed as hip dysplasia and finally having surgery to correct it, there are many forms of exercise that I used to love but now am not allowed to do. Back in my 20s, I did high impact step aerobics 4 times a week, but now my body can’t take the pounding. Ditto ballet, which I am dying to do again, but have been told by my surgeon that I shouldn’t force my leg/hip to turn out. So it’s frustrating. I just started riding our stationary bike recently (which, ironically, we got because DH’s knees can’t do running anymore). It’s boring but at least gets me moving. After I get my knee fixed I hope to try yoga again — my posture, along with other parts of me, are sliding downward and must be stopped!
Oh yes, the double standard definitely still exists in business. It’s a sad reality.

I’m glad you got a good diagnosis and can begin back on the path to pain free living!
OK, so I did a search to find the type of image I was looking for. My definition of “preppy” is heavily based in the 1980s. Izod polo shirts, twin sets as @Sparkletastic mentioned, pink and green together, etc.

Add in blonde hair, and this could have been me in high school. Just swap out the clogs for penny loafers!

View attachment 4103289

Again, add in some penny loafers and a cloth belt with little whales on it, and this was the look.

Lots of pastels, which I now hate with a passion.

Found a couple of guy shots, just for laughs.

Hope this helps explain things a bit!
Yes! This is it. Ack! :whut: I can’t even stand to look at it. And yes, this is why I have a hard time wearing pastels. LOL! @papertiger, I hadn’t heard the phrase Slone style. Interesting.
For jewellery, most things are for everyday and everywhere because things that are left for special occasions can just become just ballast.
I agree. The “ends” of my wardrobe are disappearing. Very casual and very dressy (non formal) just don’t get utilized so I stopped buying them. Even business is so much more casual across the board. My suits even rarely get a work out.

Yup, had it about a decade ago. Since then I treat myself. I’m still thrifty but, I have no problems buying myself what I want / doing for myself since I make sure I don’t waste in other areas.
Here’s what I wore on Sunday. When planning the wardrobe I thought teh blouse matched the bag. It didn’t really, but I didn’t want to change out. [emoji4]

Love your shoes. A
No. I’m worth enough to have the whole world under my feet, but I decide to be humble and keep to my corner. [emoji4]

But some items do intimidate me like classic flaps. I know I have a bit in my collection, but still, they intimidate me. [emoji28]
Love it, @vink!
Quick UK explanation of our school system.
Prep school for us = 8-13 year old boys only. They are only prep(aratory) for public school (private, single-sex school). We have a class system here (society hierarchy). The middle class is very large but no who is middle class ever admits to being middle class. Middle classes champion comprehensives (public schools) but send their boys to public schools (private school) and their daughters to private schools or grammar schools (entry by exam) or even former grammar schools (special comprehensives where entry is by exam and catchment areas).

Comprehensives were brought in the 1970s to replace a 2 tier education system (Grammars for academic achievers and secondary moderns for 'more practically driven') and were supposed to teach across abilities but have steaming (different abilities) and special classes so never have to. We also have 'academies' brought in the 1990s that make their own rules up, these are usually in posh-ish areas and are strictly catchment area based, so if you can't afford to live in small, select area your child will go to the local comp(rehensive) that may actually be further away.
I knew there were differences in structure and nomenclature between UK and US schools. I didn’t know there was this much. :cray: I’m not sure I’m clear just yet. I need to google.

In the US, we have public schools (funded mostly by property taxes) which vary wildly in quality based on geography. Wealthier areas have better schools. Poorer areas have poorer schools. Which is ridiculous. But, society at large doesn’t seem to care as long as they can move into a “good” school district for their own kids. :hrmm:

Private schools are paid for by parents. They can be religious or secular. Typically children from wealthier families go to private schools. However many middle class and lower class families (speaking financial terms here) will make the sacrifice to send their children to a private school. There are some limited academic scholarships and some financial aid opportunities which help fund a few children.

This is all for K - 12 which are the years before college (university). At that point public or private status of universities isn’t overly relevant and it isn’t predictive of quality or type of student who attends. Usually it’s research quality that makes one school “better” than another but this is certainly not the only factor. That being said, public universities are usually far less expensive than private universities - especially for in state students. So there are great bargains to be had.

Middle class people in the US usually have no problems saying they are middle class and instead take pride in being so.

Socially, we do also have other types of groupings - too many to name - old money, blue bloods, middle class, disadvantaged, whatever, etc. I personally find it silly that people like to slice and dice themselves socially. But Dr. Suess’s Star Belly Sneetches lesson still hasn’t sunk in unfortunately.

I know this question is like 7 years too late. But just wondering if anyone remembers it or had one....
I’ve always liked this bag and came within a hair’s breath of buying one. I didn’t because the company went out of business and I worrried about resale.

Its been a little crazy making at times. But, since 1)I always end up getting rid of stuff I probably shouldn’t have bought in the first place  and 2) he had no problems with me replacing / upgrading , it works out. LOL! Remember, I’m not getting rid of anything I love. He’s just nudging (pushing) me to get rid of extra i’m not using and lackluster items that I am using.

We did have a hard convo about my black Prada bauletto. He thinks that it’s not serving me since I don’t wear it as often as I used to. I had to bring out the fire breathing dragons to protect that bag. It’s not going away. I just need to rotate it in better. It’s just big and in non work situations, I usually don’t carry enough to justify a large hand carried bag.
Hahaha, yes, what rich people wear for casual, Lol! But when I was a teenager, it wasn’t just for rich people, it was a real across-the-board trend. I would call that photo of Lady Di preppy as well.

Agree. In the 80’s preppy had nothing to do with wealth. It was just a very widespread style. Lucky for me that by the time I got to college, it was done.

And OMG on the penny loafers. I’m having flashbacks. :faint: LOL!
Shopping my closet too! Today with Prada BN 2423 in Bluette. It has gone cooler now here that the wet season has started. Summer reached a high of 40C (104F), now down to 32C (but feels like 35-37C with humidity.
