Hi everyone,

I've been reading the posts in this thread. You guys are truly inspiring. I'm at a point in my collection where I feel like it's difficult to rotate and use all the bags that I love. 2016 was supposed to be the year that I limit myself to just 1 bag purchase. Well, that did not happen... ugh!!! In the last month, I have been telling myself that I really have to be serious about it this time.

Sorry, if this is too long... To give a bit of background, I'm not one that can let go easily of bags. I have bags from 10-13 years ago that I don't want to sell even if I tried. I pull them out and omg, I remember why I fell in love with it. I've decided to keep these bags as long as I have intentions of using them even if rare. I have sold a few contemporary bags that I don't even know why I got; they were either not used or used a couple of times - these were no brainers to sell. In the last 3 years or so, I have purchased bags that I really love. I bought them based on the gaps I saw in my collection. Now, I feel like I've reached a point where there are no gaps to fill but I just want more bags...lol (yes, I recognize that I have a problem).

I'd like to join you guys if that's ok. I'll keep it as simple as possible as it is not easy to attain as it is.

Pre-goal: I have one more item that I'm waiting for arriving within the next few months. I have been looking for this in the last year or so, so I'm giving myself this last item before going into bag hibernation. If it arrives, I'll be happy. If it does not, I'm no longer going to search for it - at least not in 2017

Goal:
1. No bag purchases for the entire 2017 (other than pre-goal)
2. Rotate my bags as much as possible. I'm doing well with this, I think. I'll try for the 15 in 31 and see if I can make it

Stretch Goal: No slg purchases for the entire 2017. (This is truly a stretch goal. It will take me a lot of will power but I will make an attempt.)

Welcome, bh4me! You've definitely come to the right thread! I joined the 2016 thread halfway through the year and it absolutely changed my life. I was able to re-home most of the bags that just didn't work for me in my collection (just a few more to go!) and get a lot better about just generally shopping in my closet for not only bags but all my clothes, shoes, and jewelry.
I love your idea of a pre-goal, a goal, and a stretch goal. It's a good way to break things down.
As you can see, we all have different goals for this year. For me, last year, I found that just writing my goals down in a public thread helped keep me "honest." I hope it works for you, too!
Good luck with your first goal: 15 in 31!

Hi Ladies! I have been speed reading the posts in this thread (tis a fast moving one!) and I want to join in as well. I have already started to mentally list out some of the bags that I want to sell/give away although no concrete action has been taken yet, because I find selling to be such a hassle. I have started with my own clothes though (these are easier), whereby I took out the clothes that I intend to donate soon and pack them together. I already felt better by just doing that.

I would like to try the 3 in 31 challenge although it might end up as 2 in 31 or even 1 in 31 though. Haha. The first bag that I will use in Jan is my small purple Givenchy Pandora. I really like this one and may end up not using other bags except for my MZW backpack for rainy days. This was easy as I was already planning to use it once I switch out my neon blue Mulberry SBS.

However, I cannot put myself on ban island as it is too difficult for me, considering the no. of bags I bought in 2016 (the last bag purchase was made on 30 Dec 2016!) :p But I will at least try to limit to maybe 5 new bags max for 2017. I don't want to set such strict limitations and end up not achieving anything. XD

Good luck to every one else with their resolutions! :flowers:

You can do it! You're the one who inspired us all!! And we're here to support you.

I don't usually do bans but I will say having my specific list of bags I want keeps me from buying the impulse bags. So maybe if you identify what you would buy next year will keep you from buying something else this year.
the only bags I want right now are preloved ones but the condition I've set myself is that I need to let go of more first so I can enjoy these preloved ones that will come in in the future. For now though, I'm enjoying what I own so it's great that I'm not in a rush to find preloved ones.

@eggtartapproved I think that I will need help in sticking to my plan too. Last year when I was tempted to buy a bag I had not planned for, I went into my closet and took my bags out of their dust bags. Looking at them usually made me very happy, and quelled the urge to immediately buy another bag. [emoji3] I also planned to buy the H Picotin Lock; I did, and I knew that other purchases would delay the purchase of the bag that I really wanted.

I did a fair amount of selling the last 2 years, and although overall I did well, I find selling stressful and time consuming. So I would rather make well thought out purchases with the hope being that I won't need to do much selling.
i look at my bags at times and then a smile covers my face haha. Then my dh laughs at me lol. There are several bags I've identified to test and let go of if I decide to let any go, and those will fund my preloved ones that I have my eyes on.

Here are the 2 I wore to church -

My catch-all Baggu I keep the boys things in (in desperate need of a spa day :hiding face:)

And my Coach Ranger in red that I am loving! (Purchased for a song recently and love the straps do shoulder or cross-body)

Don't forget to eat a black-eyed pea today!
These are gorgeous! The coach is so beautiful and I love the shade of red. I've wondered about the leather baggu bags - I just have the reusable ones but have never had the chance to see a leather one irl. Do they wear well? Yours looks great!
For anyone curious on what a Speedy 20 can carry:

These are my essentials.
ZCP, my one actual wallet.
Card case, with the rewards cards in it.
Back up battery, Pokémon and tpf drains my battery haha.
Cles, for my allergy meds.
Mini Pochette, for all my other necessities.

And tucked in a corner is a foldable reusable bag.
thanks for posting this! Good to know how much can fit since I often over pack haha

Hi [emoji112] everyone! I'm looking forward to joining you all in 2017! Here are my goals (baby steps!):

1. no bag or wallet purchases in Q1 2017, with the exception of SO
2. 15/31: actively change bags to wear at least 15 during January

In my head I "need" , but know that I don't really, a classic Chanel jumbo and a classic Chanel mini rectangle.

Here is my bag and wallet #1 for January 1.

gorgeous!

I am officially joining this year. I tried to last year and I lasted all of two minutes.
These sales I have bought 4 bags all of which I'm still tossing up which to keep if any. But I made a pact that once the new year clicked over that was it, bag ban time.
So I made all my purchases before the new year and once they all arrive I'll decide which to keep and which to return then I'm banning myself for the whole year....I feel confident now but I know I'll be tempted. There will always be bags after the year has passed and it gives me time to save for something special. I'm also selling a whole bunch too so by the end of the year I'd like to take my collection from over 30 to 25 or less and add no more.

Good luck everyone!
welcome!!! We're here to help and cheer you on!

My coping strategy is to delete all emails about flash sales BEFORE reading them!
i do that too lol

I have officially started my "3 in 31", even though I didn't carry any bag at all today. DH and I took a long walk by the bay, but he drove, so all I brought with me was my phone, in my jacket pocket.

Anyway, here are the three bags I'll be carrying in the month of January: Mulberry Alexa (for days when I need to carry a lot, and/or when it rains); Marc Jacobs Large Single (for dressy-ish occasions); Fendi By The Way (for days when the weather is nicer and I don't need to carry quite as much).

The MJ single looks larger than the Fendi, but that's just because of the angle of the photograph. Actually, the Fendi is somewhat larger than the MJ bag. But it's a more casual bag, because I carry it cross body, so it isn't really appropriate for dressy occasions. The leather on the MJ bag is lamb and has a bit of a glossy finish to it, which makes it dressier. Plus the color lends a bit of pop in the winter, when I tend to wear either black or navy. The Mulberry Alexa is too well-made to be considered a true "carefree" bag, but I've been in heavy coastal storms while carrying it, and it's absolutely indestructible.

wow these are gorgeous and especially when grouped together. The colours really pop out. I love the fendi!!! Your Alexa is beautiful, it's one of my preloved bags I want to search for, and of course the color on the mj is always beautiful.

Elaine, you really have a gorgeous collection! Where have you been hiding that super special Fendi????

And I have changed my definition of my carefree bags. For me they are (will be) attractive, high quality, well made bags that are sturdy enough and / or that I got at a low enough price that I don't mind carrying them in places where they may get dinged. So I think your Mulberry definitely qualifies! It's great looking and it's sturdy. I have the Chanel tote I just bought that I still need to share because it's at the spa (it had denim transfer on the back) that will be one of my carefree bags because I got it for a song and it's not super delicate. I'm looking for a Prada nylon bag for my carefree category too!
Oooh, can you share a before and after spa pic? I'd love to see how spas are able to deal with transfer.
Here's my 7 in 31 for January

And 5 in 28 for February

And for the rest of the year I'm using 3-4 bags a month! This will get me to my >$10 cost per wear. [emoji4]
awesome line up!

Welcome! Your post reminds me so much of where I was when I first joined tpf. It wasn't until I had the bags I needed for function that I was able to stop buying and I think you're getting there! There will always be temptation but I found if I had the bag already that works, I was much better able to control actually buying it. It also took me a really long time to bring myself to use all my bags, so I took that as a huge win! And I still have bags from years ago that I can't bring myself to sell because I love them every time I see them :) you can do this! We're here for you!

Ooh pls post your pandora if you don't mind - I can already imagine it haha. How do you like the function of the bag getting in and out of it? I've always been so curious about this one!

Thanks ElainePG! I used to have a bigger problem with clothes and shoes :p For some reason, I was able to manage on my own with this just in 2016... yay! I donated so much clothes and cleaned out my closet. With shoes, I no longer buy impulsively and purchases have died down significantly... I'm almost there! My next step with shoes is really clearing up space and donating. I've already had multiple visits to the donation center. I don't know what it is but my 'life change' with shoes and clothes was a very natural progression. It's almost like I just got tired of it one day which I never thought would happen. Bag challenge here I come!

Here you go! The pic was taken when I bought it in Nov 2016. I have only used it for about 2 weeks before I switched to my Mulberry SBS. I'm itching to use it again! It is not a hassle to get in and out of the bag (you don't need to perform special tricks to get into the bag XD It's almost like a top-zip handbag in my opinion), and it is very spacious for its size, since it is really shaped like a box!

I think that cpw is a good way to look at purchases. Don't know if I could ever get mine down to $10 per bag, because I use a bag for a week at a time!

With enough rotation, I'm sure you can!

It helps that I'm doing my ban so I can focus on using what I have.
