But Spark, maybe you meant that the bag would be designed and custom made from scratch with a leather craftsman with the highest quality methods of construction and materials AND then the bag would be a known 'brand' with marketing machine behind it that will give you cache to be seen carrying it? Then I don't know of any option. But there are people who have a passion for this and have set up a shop on etsy to pursue that passion part time without quitting their day jobs and because they are not a brand, they do not command prices worth the time they spend but they do it because they love the process. Just because they are small time doesn't mean the quality is not up there with the most expensive brands. Cathy from iadoremybag on etsy is really passionate about learning the methods that the most exclusive labels use to make luxury handbags and has spent six years studying how to do so and now has expanded beyond making bags for herself and loved ones since she enjoys the process so much as her passion, she puts up her creations on etsy, but is available for a totally custom bag basically at cost of materials (at their cost in Europe, she lives in an expensive part of the world). She has never been able to quit her day job and may never be able to, because a marketing machine is necessary to command prices that would allow her to do so, and maybe she doesn't want to do it full time. Maybe it is more fun as a hobby. But anyways, it is neat to design a bag and not worry about the production process exploiting anyone because it's just her and everything is happening within the first world.

I'm a little slow...I didn't know what controversy @bakeacookie was talking about. I agree with all that @vink said. No worries, bakeacookie. Good discussion all around.
I was confused also because I didn't see controversy either. Felt we had good discussion regarding pros and cons on preloved vs New and contemporary vs premiere.

Nope. I never said anything about marketing machines and cache. I also didn't offer any equations for relating size of the operation to quality. Did you get my post confused with something else?

I spoke about my two requirements if I were to be able go the route of a bespoke bag 1) truly custom - not a modification of existing designs and 2) elite (not good, not very good) quality in craftsmanship and materials. Simple as. If / when I come across that combo one day, I'll be thrilled to explore it.

Enjoy your work with Cathy! It seems you are very excited and passionate about what you're creating with her.

Sorry I made inaccurate assumptions. I am excited about Cathy because her passion for making luxury bags really shows in the messages. But I will cut my losses real quick if the instock bags I bought that are on the way are not perfection. I have been disappointed from etsy before, and have indeed never stumbled upon elite level luxury bags custom designed available on etsy before. There are a few I have seen but not bought for that seem awfully nice but I don't know if you can design a totally custom bag. For example this company in Budapest. https://www.etsy.com/shop/GIONbag
The user photos in the reviews look really impeccable but I have yet to take the plunge.

Etsy is nice but I haven't heard of / seen anyone there who does true bespoke at a level of the top brands. The ones I've seen have nice enough product but nothing that could rival say, Hermes. And how amazing would it be to explore and own that level of quality and materials in a truly one of a kind custom bag.

It's like custom clothes. My local tailor could whip up a great looking custom men's shirt. But it won't have the level of design, materials or finishing that a shirt from Astor & Black or something made from one of the best shops on Savile Row will have.

Again, I'm happy to be educated. So, if I'm wrong, please share.

@vink - yep, I need to do a search on TPF. I'll report back if I find anything.

I'm sure the thread exists. I read it some time ago. I'm sorry I can't be anymore help. Typing on my mobile isn't that convenient in the end. [emoji20]

This is so interesting! What a great discussion Spark, Vink and Hopeless. I have never looked at etsy or any custom bag makers before. I didn't realise the level of craftsmanship and training some of these people have. You have opened my eyes!

OMG!! You girls are like queens of Etsy!

I just felt like my posts are not well received here anymore, and that discussing my dilemma was not welcome.

I guess because I am thinking of less popular bags, it's not exciting.
I really respect your viewpoint Bake, and I enjoy the discussions you spark and I think others here do as well. Personally I am just as excited by preloved bags as new (and as Spark and others mentioned sometimes that hunt can be more exciting than buying new) and I'm very happy to discuss bags at any perceived ' level '.

Although I don't always have a chance to participate (as by the time I catch up on reading the subject had been exhausted), the discussions in this thread is part of what makes it such a great thread to be a part of. It keeps me coming back to TPF more than any other threads.

So please don't feel your input is not well received, I really don't think that was the case. We are just lively debaters!

HBG,

I know lots of people love etsy for unique one of a kind items. I also believe that everyone's definition of what's quality greatly differs. I simply don't believe that a bespoke bag made by individual for few hundred dollars is the same quality and craftsmanship as say Hermes, LV or Chanel. These luxury brands are able to source the finest raw materials and the craft people are masters at this. Many spend their entire lives perfecting their craft not merely working on weekends.

My lack of involvement and connection to tpf seems to help my wallet at least.

Bake, I think you're reading too much into it. My purchases recently are not popular at all. [emoji6] I think perhaps you're just bored and tired. Everything has its own toll. Even shopping. I dare to say this coz I've been there. Stressed too much that I thought buying something would help brighten up my mood. It did. Only for a while. And it did leave me with a fed up, empty feeling later. Not to mention a messy house and a bruised wallet. [emoji6] I was so bad there's a phase that I went into a store with an intention to buy whatever I can wear or put on and it'd just only look ok. Not even a selective buying. And it's not fun. (I hope you weren't as bad. [emoji6]) I'm glad to hear you got rid of your unwanted stuff and slim down the baggage. Perhaps it's just a boredom. Perhaps it's just a phase or cycle.

Spend only on what your heart truly desire, be it new or preloved, popular or not. (I bought most of my DD's clothes from discounted overstock market while most of my friends got their kids' from department store or even order them abroad. I don't really care. Kids clothes will get very dirty and she grows up fast. I even adjust many of her dresses into a tunic tops when she outgrow them. Yet, I spend money on Chanel. [emoji16] Oh... she has her own library and I take her traveling abroad at least twice every year. Don't judge me. [emoji16]) and if you don't want to buy anything, you don't have to. Keeping money in your account or grow it via stocks, options, or whatever available for investment there are also a great thing to do. It's your money. No one will judge you for spending or not spending, or even do nothing with it and let it rot in your basement. If they do, look them up and down then walk away. These freaks don't deserve a valuable space in your brain.

Everyone has their own things. Don't worry too much. [emoji4] If you get bored, take sometime off. You'll probably feel better. But I'm sure you're always welcome. [emoji4]

So you're saying that all of those 3 design houses only employs people who have spent decades making bags by hand, and none of those bags are made by machines in a factory? The materials might be amazing but you know, in the end a cow and a sheep of whatever age is just a mammal hide and not a totally different thing. I think an individual in Europe might be able to find a good hide, even from as nice a leather source as the big brands. And I think marketing is the biggest expense these brands spend on.
That's why my crocodile bag is fun, it really is a totally different thing!

And I don't romanticize handmade vs factory produced. I would prefer a factory assembled car to one made by hand, for example.
But we are talking handbags, not a computer or the cure for cancer. or being the next Mozart composer. It doesn't take a PhD, or decades of full time bag making to learn the techniques to make a top of the line bag. I think it's like any handicraft, several years of practice will do it.
If you think I'm being catty about marketing :
