Question for everyone: do you still love the same brands that you did when you first joined TPF or has that changed?

I just realized that I'm not interested in buying any of my previous favorite brands. Some of the reasons are my standards for quality has increased, my taste has changed, head designers have changed and I've been exposed to brands / styles I prefer.

The only brand I could see going back to is Prada. But, they need some innovation.

Anyone else find that they've switched brand loyalties? If so, why?

I joined tpf to have better insight into the luxury goods market.

Before tpf i always admired the higher premier brands from afar and saw them as unattainable.

Joining the forum made me realize, you get what you pay for; quality trumps quantity every time. With a little bit of sacrifice and responsible financial engineering nothing is unattainable.

My brands before tpf were anya hindmach (mostly), gucci (canvas line), mulberry.
Don’t get me wrong all are fabulous brands but the only one i may potentially go back to is probably mulberry. Anya is abit too eclectic for me now and gucci hasn’t done anything i like in ages.

For me (personally) i wouldn’t use the term loyalty to a brand; it puts too much pressure on me to consistently buy from that brand alone.

At present my go to brands are chanel, dior, bottega, LV, and if i’m lucky to get a piece from the brand, hermes.

I'm still loyal to the premier brand (LV) that I learned more about on TPF when I first joined. I dabbled in Rebecca Minkoff and Linea Pelle as well as lurked in the Mulberry subforum back then. I was so into hardware, pockets, buckles, etc. But that was the look nine years ago.

I was never interested in Bottega Veneta because I thought its simplicity was boring. Now I am a loyal fan. And, I prefer simple lines and discreet or no branding. I am settled into my personal taste and style, which I'm fairly certain will not change much as time goes on.

I'm somewhat glad I pulled the trigger on the Mulberry bag I have been wanting for some time. If not, I would have bought something from the sales (which will be filler(s)) and then delay purchase of the bag I really want and then eventually buy it.
Congratulations on your new bag! Good job on getting the bag you really want instead of a bag you're just settling for. It took me a couple of tries to learn that hard (and expensive) lesson.

Kisses to @tenKrat who is the loveliest kama’aina + TPF friend in the world and finally succumbed to all my Jedi mind tricks to get her to send this purse back overseas so I could wear it with my dark brown boots with dark gunmetal hardware on the corset details there on the sides, and be all matchy matchy ridiculous. I’m in seventh heaven now. Thank you!!!!!
You're welcome. She looks great with the rest of your outfit.

Great news from Yoogi's on my Fendi bag. When I initially sent them the description and photos, they offered me a buyout price, but it was a range. Even with the range, it was still higher by 30% than Fashionphile, so I decided to take it and I boxed up the bag and shipped it to them.
Yesterday they sent me an email that the bag had arrived, and they had decided to give me the top of their buyout range. Woohoo! :yahoo: They say the $$$ will be coming to me in a day or two. And since I don't have any bag purchases on the horizon, this is pure profit.
Two bags sold this year, and a whole bunch of pouches donated. Also working on a major clothing purge this weekend, with everything going up to my favorite thrift shop on Monday.
Excellent, @ElainePG! You remind me to go through a tote of clothes I recently found, ugh. I suppose I could get rid of all the clothes because obviously, I forgot that the tote even existed.

I have an Anya Hindmarch Ebury from several years ago. Still love that bag. It came with two straps — one black like the bag, one green — way before bag straps became a “thing.” It’s made from goat skin and is one of the best quality Made in China bags I’ve ever seen, lol! I thought of getting another in a different color, but by the time I decided on it, she had redesigned the bag so the handles no longer folded down. Then she started putting stickers on everything and her styles got a little too kitschy for me.

It’s a tough balance, isn’t it? If a brand doesn’t innovate you get bored, but if it does, it’s a 50/50 chance they’ll go in a direction you like ...
It really is. Dior's new designer is "innovating" and I hate it. LOL! But Prada (handbag side) really isn't evolving in a way I can understand. The reliance on saffiano totes / bags has been too much for too long. The Inside Bag isn't as horrible as I first thought but it certainly wasn't a good move. There new bags with the extended flaps aren't great either. I think Miuccia needs to step aside and hire some fresh talent.
Fendi on the other hand seems to do a good job of innovating yet keeping their core customer happy.
I don’t know why I said the occasional ‘rural’ and cocinelle. I meant FURLA and Cocinnelle. I think it was autocorrect.
Autocorrect regularly makes my posts indecipherable. It changes words I typed correctly into something bizarre yet leaves gobbledygook I type untouched. I've reset my phone's dictionary several times. Nothing helps.
I know, everyone says they would be done with the brand after being banned, and of course I was for 6 months but then I just got over it and realized that I didn’t blame the purses for less than gracious behavior from the team that runs the company that sells the purses. I can’t, I like them. I am definitely done ever having any interaction with any humans on the team, but the webshop is just ordering with an online store, so.... that has been fine. But I know if I had any principles I would protest anything to do with Massaccesi. At least new bags. But I dropped the grudge after 6 months and ordered from them. But as part of Ban motivation I should revive that grudge in my mind to keep me honest and committed!~. Yes, on principle, never MM again!!!! If they don’t want me, I don’t want them!! Hey, is that convincing??
I don't know. If you love the bags it's probably best to buy the bags. I think your ability to drop the grudge was a good thing. And I say that being a grudge holder just as @catsinthebag says she is. Lol! It would seem to keep more happy and less stress in your life.

I don’t feel much loyalty to any brand right now, TBH. I’ve definitely gone through phases over the years, but either the brand has changed its aesthetic or my style has changed, and I’ve moved on. Also, some brands I love but I only love one or two styles, like the LV Speedy and Chanel Reissue (actually I do like a lot of Chanel styles, but not enough to invest the $$$ in them!). I was loyal to Hermes for years, but not all their bags work for me (and even the ones that do aren’t perfect). I do love the history, quality and craftsmanship of the brand, but I recently had a bad experience with my SA that has really soured me for the moment.

As I look back to the time before I joined tPF, and the bag journey I’ve been on since, I only see two items that I’ve consistently loved all that time: Hermes scarves and Chanel flaps. But those are things that don’t always fit my everyday life, so I am trying to be picky and find quality things that do fit my everyday life. It’s a process! :panic:
I'd love your input on my continued conundrum. I've spent years thinking about whether I should buy Hermes. I buy for style, quality, function, brand cache and good resale in that order. So buying Hermes resale seems like a great idea as it meets 3 of the 5 criteria (quality, cache, resale).

But, I struggle with the first one - style. I can't "get" myself to love most of the designs. And the ones I like seem to have issues that would be deal breakers (like the Kelly having a difficult opening or the Constance having the limited capacity and the big H on the front or the Birkin being heavy). To spend the extra money, I should be insanely in love with the bags.

And, I can't get a good read on function because I can't see them / try them in store. I've made sooooo many mistakes buying sight unseen that I can't take the leap on a 5 figure bag.

So, I'd like to get your (and other Hermes buyers and non lovers) opinions on why the brand works or doesn't work for you. I feel like I'm not "getting it". Just like several years ago I didn't "get" the brands I buy now. I appreciate all comments. :flowers: Is the quality really that much better than say Gucci? Are the styles more functional than some on TPF have stated? Will I just need to buy one to "get it"?

Hmm, well, this is a tough one since style is so personal and what functions well for one person is terrible for another. The Birkin is a good example of that: ladies who love the B talk about how easy it is to access your stuff. But for me, a bag that can’t be carried on my shoulder is useless. And yes, it’s HEAVY. So you’ll have to take what I say here with the understanding that it’s just my experience with Hermes and just certain bags (although I’ve tried on bunches of them so if there’s a particular style you want input on, let me know).

Re. quality, yes, Hermes really is that good. My bags have held up extremely well, and the vintage ones are even better than the ones I bought at the boutique. If you decide to buy vintage, I’ve heard over and over on the H forum that the bags from the 90s are absolutely the best. I have 3 Kelly’s all from that decade and they are magnificent (if I say so myself!). The only brand I’ve heard H afficionados admit may be as good is BV.

Also, you can always send any leather good to Spa, and while I haven’t yet done that, I’ve heard they can work wonders on a bag.

This, however, is a different question from, “Is the quality worth the difference in price?” That’s for each person to decid for themselves. I don’t have a lot of experience or knowledge about Gucci, but I will say that I consider my Chanel Reissues to be excellent quality. Heck, Longchamp’s quality is excellent for the price, IMO. So, how important is “the best” quality vs. really excellent quality?

Re. function, there are lots of different styles to choose from and they do try to continue to innovate (touching on your previous comment about innovation!). The Halzan, for example, is a big hit because it’s completely unique and has an innovative design. Lots of ladies love the Lindy for function. But I’m with you— I feel like there are a lot of designs that I don’t “get,” or that simply don’t work for me.

Some designs you really do have to try on to “get.” I used to hate (and I do mean hate!) the Evelyne. That perforated H was so annoying! Then I realized I could wear it with the perforated H against my body, and tried one on. It is such a comfortable, easy to wear bag! The strap is the perfect width for comfort, the soft Clemence leather hugs your body, and the quality of the leather stands out even on such a simple design. I would have hated the Evelyne forever if I hadn’t given it a shot in person. So if you can get to a boutique, or a luxury consignment store that carries H, it can be really helpful to hold these bags and try them on in person. You can also always buy from a place like Fashionphile that has a return policy.

Since you mentioned the Kelly: The Kelly and the Chanel Reissue are my two absolute favorite bag styles of all time. Neither one is particularly easy to use, however! With the Kelly, some of it is a matter of finding the right size and type of leather. One of my Ks is a 32 in Box leather. It’s gorgeous, but stiff and not easy to access. My K35 in Barenia leather is a whole different story. It’s larger, and the leather has softened with age — especially the sangles — so strapping the bag up or undoing it is not a really hard thing. Also, you can wear the Kelly with just the turn lock closing the bag and leave the sangles hanging. Not quite as good for the integrity of the bag, but it makes the clasp a lot more similar to a Chanel turnlock and not such an involved production. It will never, ever be as easy as an open tote. But it stands out in a way that no other bag does. I just think that you can’t always use it as an everyday bag, so you need to make sure you know what your expectations are before investing in one.

Wow, I didn’t intend for this post to be so long! Sorry for being so long-winded. Let me know if you have other questions,

p.s. If you can live with small capacity but hate the big H on the Constance, have a look at the Roulis!

Last day with my tea rose before work tomorrow!

Brought this dino to be stamped with a bow too. [emoji4]

Managed to make the weekend with no SLGs or bags! I did buy some other things though, but nothing major.

There’s so many pretty bags that I really liked but weren’t worth breaking the ban for.

I feel like there’s nothing new right now. Kinda not feeling anything available which is kind of a bummer because DBF is asking what I’d like for Christmas. And for the first time I’m at a complete blank.

I’m actually a crazy grudge holder too! It’s one of my worst qualities. Maybe worst.
But if the grudge will hold me between pretty Italian purses at 40% off already reasonable prices, well, we saw last summer that just dissolved it instantaneously and I was back in the fold when the webshop had no grudge against me either.

But I seriously have enough Massaccesis! I do not need more than dozen (plus another half dozen SLGs) bags from a company that told me to get lost! *facepalm* I can tear myself away, I can do it. Time to ban....
Actually I’m getting more and more interested in taking the plunge with a custom bag from Cathy Roels in Belgium. She’s the part time leatherworker who studies from a master at Delvaux these last 7 years in addition to her day job and sells bags on etsy and locally. She only does really high quality details and leather linings and she has learned to use only the exact technique and equipment that they use at Delvaux and none of the construction techniques say, for textiles, or for non-luxury bags, and I do have two of her unlined bags that are amazing so I am tempted to go for a fully lined, fully finished bag from her....! I just get scared about customs after a bad experience where I was sorely disappointed, if I can’t see a photo of something very similar to what I’m going to get, before spending the money and waiting the weeks. So..... I have held off ordering a custom purse from her this last year and just stalked her in stock on etsy. BUT she posts only one bag a month and there have not been really many that jump out at me.
BUT, if Cathy Roels with her really luxe standards and less-than-Massaccesi price point (which is crazy that she charges less than 10 euros for her time, but she does it because it’s her passion, not her dayjob, and she’s ‘no name’ so that’s kind of the deal for now ), and reasonable shipping rates/Times being in the same continent as I am....no customs.... it’s a potential trifecta of perfect for me bag buying. I’m half hoping I’ll hate the third bag I’m waiting for, from her, so I can just write her off and be FULLY UNMOORED, and thus more successful at ban in the coming months.
But of course secretly hoping it’s awesome and I get to buy incredible bags for a few hundred...... *sneaky*
