I see the movie is now on HBO and I haven't seen it yet, and now I don't think I want to. I loved the version with Striesand and Kristofferson....they had real chemistry! I was hoping this one would be good too......but now I don't think it will be. I'll probably watch it at some point though......

It was sorta odd how they showed her cheesy pop performance and then just let it go (as if it was OK?)

Did the guy commit suicide in the first 2 movies too?

I just saw A Star is Born recently as well and was not impressed. I thought they made him look bad and older on purpose since his character was supposed to be an aging alcoholic/drug addict.

I actually thought he looked the part. Years of the hard knock life. Heavy drinking, pills, little sleep etc.

Yes! That bothered me too. I liked the movie as well. The music, acting...all of it!

To each his own. I thought Bradley was good in it, but it was really a vehicle for Gaga. I’m also of the age that saw the second version when it first came out, and I just liked that version better. And if you asked someone 20 yrs older than me, they would prefer the original film.

Yes. This version is actually the fourth time A Star is Born has been made. The first movie was in the 30s, then Judy Garland’s version in the 50s and Barbra Streisand’s in the 70s. It has to be one of the most recycled stories ever.

I am trying to remember but I got the impression that the Judy Garland James Mason one was favored. I will see if I can find it. It could also be that I enjoyed that part of the show best too. Who knows? lol

I see that carlpsmom linked it here but it’s readily available and TCM shows it occasionally.

The main difference from the remakes I remember is that there is no musical element in the original movie. Frederic March played an alcoholic movie star whose career is declining and Janet Gaynor played a newly discovered actress.

I liked the movie, shrug.. it was depressing but very entertaining to watch on the laptop.
