Public's perception of Birkin vs Kelly?

Very few B or K ever here. The nearest H store is NYC or Boston, so you have to go to those areas to hope of seeing one.

I sometimes get reactions, but mostly not. I don't think people here know what they are. It is more of a new england thing, I think, to just be restrained in general. When I carried a B in Los Angeles, I had people stopping me and wanting to touch it. Just a different culture.

I live in Columbia, South Carolina and I've only seen one Birkin in real life and it was a cognac ostrich with phw but I don't think anybody else really seemed to know what it was. A girl on my fb feed posted a picture of a gold B and she just called it a 'camel bag' and nobody corrected her. I'm not so sure there are too many people here that know what Birkins and Kellys are.

Birkins usually make people go quiet. Kellys don't.

My B shuts the room. Lol. Well depends where.

Jewelry stores go amaze balls. Some women shoot death stares. And others are mute or don't care.

I personally believe Kellys are gorgeous even though I don't own a classic version. I think the women that rock them are awesome and fierce.

Long live H!

The last comment I got from a stranger was from a lady sitting next to me on a flight. It was my B40 in UVand she asked if that was my laptop bag or purse, I replied "actually both" and she continued that it was beautiful. I doubt she knew it was a B (I was flying in coach in addition), but I like those comments the best because it shows appreciation for the bag itself rather than the brand.

Coming from the public's side.. i do love seeing birkins and kellys!

I am just starting my LV collection and I would also love to have a Birkin one day (hopefully soon!) I dont usually see them though, but when i do i try to be discreet in looking so the owner wont think i'm weird or something. I just get excited whenever i see them! I hope you all wont mind me drooling over your purses

I don't own either yet (hopefully that will soon change!), but from my experience Birkins (especially color ones) get more attention than Kellys where I live. I think this is because of the media's depiction of Birkins as a status bag, whereas Kellys are more under the radar.

Chanels get some attention, too, but that's about it beside the B.

I'm in and near NYC so H bags are more common. I find that I get the most compliment on my bolide and my toolbox because of the color/leather. My toolbox is Bleu Electrique and so many people have complimented me on it without knowing the brand. The same goes for my vache natural bolide which has a gorgeous patina thanks to the lovely tpf'er I got her from. I haven't carried my B as much but it does get attention, mostly from salespeople in other stores who know what it is. I also get compliments on the color. However, no one notices when I carry my bbk. I think because it's black and gets lost in the sea of black bags in NYC, especially in this dreary winter.

Now that I think about it, other than inside the boutique (as in on the display case, etc), I honestly don't recall seeing a Kelly in my city at all. As in all wildlife sighting. Not sure why. I've seen Birkins, bolides, maybe one Lindy and several JPGs but no Kellys. Wierd...

I have neither a Kelly nor a Birkin but I hope it’s ok that I make some reflections. I think the media has a lot to do with what gets popular.
I live in a smaller town in Sweden where not so many people own designer bags. I don’t think most people would recognize a B or K here in this town. LV is a different subject with the logo showing off and they became popular after those Paris Hilton programs a few years ago. I also think that the Real housewives franchise has affected the general population’s knowledge on designer goods. I did not know about Jimmy Choo until I saw it on that program a number of years ago.
When I go to our capital and the areas where the designer boutiques are located, it gets much more frequent to see designer bags and I have a great time looking at people and admiring their bags. I feel I get treated nicer in the stores when I wear my designer bags (or it is just all in my head and I behave differently when I dress up ).
I also think that those with a colorful bag (regardless if it is B or K) will draw the attention from people just for being colorful since most people buy neutral colors.
I love beautiful bags and when I do see one I take a proper look since it is so rare. Personally I’ve thought why I do buy so expensive bags, why not go into the leather shop and buy something that is functional and much less expensive. There are a number of reasons:
1. I love a beautiful craftsmanship and many times you can see that they have put a lot of thought into the design of the bag.
2. Quality, I’ve bought so many leather handbags where handles and metal parts have come off after 6 months.
3. They are made by skilled craftsmen that hopefully work in good environments and get decent salaries.

But if I ransack my heart, there is also another reason. Yes, part of me does like to show off a beautiful bag. I work two jobs to pay for these luxuries and I am proud that I can purchase them. I am sure I’m not the only one.
I have read here in this thread that a B is quite large and heavy. I am curious to the reasons why do you buy it and carry it around? Why is there such a long bag queue at FSH in Paris, people desperately searching for a B and subjecting to rude SAs day after day to score a B? Can part of it has to do with being a status symbol?

WELL SAID~great point you made & totally agree with "being status symbol"
however, after owning first B i love it so much as it looks beautiful & the quality of leather , colour of the leather is amazing. The weight of the bag....i can compromise as we wear high heals even though its not 100% comfortable ;)

I'm originally from a small city in Germany, called Baden Baden. A city well known in Germany for its Casino and Thermal Spa's. Since I moved to Paris for work last August, I didn't really get a chance to go back home and take some time for myself - so I did last week, and decided on Saturday to go on a shopping day in Frankfurt with my family...

..In the past, I've had several reactions to my Hermès handbags, both positive and negative, but what happened on Saturday made me blush...

...While inside the Hermès boutique on the Goethestrasse, a male SA approached me, because one of his costumers wanted to have a close up look at my Birkin. She wanted apparently the same colour and leather combo but wasn't sure on the size, as she was quite petite compared to me.

All of a sudden my Birkin became the point of attraction inside the store, and I felt slightly uncomfortable but helpful at the same time. There were other women inside the store carrying Birkin's, but all in neutral colours, mine was the only one that stoop out.

On the same day, while shopping at other stores, my bag managed to score even more and more compliments..

I love pop colour and RED is my IT colour. I politely asked SM and SA , do not surprise me with anything mixed with Red as I already have too many RED bags :roflmfao: Doesn't matter how many red/coral/orange/pink i have…i will jump on it.
I wanted to get neutral colour from the start but B is a special one, so I decided to buy few neutral coloured GP instead. Which i don't need to baby them :graucho:
