I think its really important to be comfortable in your clothes and, ultimately, your own skin, says the actress Zoë Kravitz, who has gamely played dress-up for a special festive Farfetch shoot. Theres nothing less sexy than a girl in a pair of pumps that she cant walk in.
So whats her own sartorial comfort zone? A good white T-shirt. You can dress it up or dress it down. Just a white T-shirt with jeans is such a cool, timeless look. Or you wear it with a black pencil skirt and costume jewellery for the evening, and its transformed completely. I have so many I buy every cool vintage white T-shirt that crosses my path.
Zoë likes to mix things up, zipping from the retro elegance of her favourite shoot look high-waisted circle skirt and big earrings (It has an old-school, Audrey Hepburn vibe to it) to the downtown-cool aesthetic of her friend Alexander Wang (His first collection for Balenciaga was so great it actually brought tears to my eyes).
Its the same when it comes to her film roles, which veer between action blockbusters (X-Men: First Class) to heartfelt indies (Its Kind Of A Funny Story). There are characters that Im nothing like, but there are aspects of my personality that I can explore in every character I play, she explains. Even if theyre a really awful person, I can draw on parts of myself I dont like so that I can try to understand them and give depth to that character. You can find similarities and identify with almost anyone if you try.
As the daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, a career in the performing arts was perhaps inevitable for the 25-year-old: Acting felt the natural choice. As a kid I would put on shows for my family, and had so much fun playing different characters and coming up with stories. In 2014 Zoë will appear in some of the years most high-profile films, proving that it was a path well taken.
But dont take our word for it. Heres what Zoë has to say on the world of film the ones she loves and those that look set to shoot her star into serious ascent.
The future blockbuster: Divergent
The movie takes place in a future where, in order for society to survive, people must join different factions, the social groups that theyre best equipped for. My character, Christina, is originally from the honesty faction, Candor, so she has no filter and says whatever she wants. I say what I think, so I definitely identified with her strength and independence. I really like seeing young, strong women in film. I think its really important to show women in this light right now.
The beloved franchise: Mad Max
I actually didnt think I was going to get the Mad Max role. The audition was really vague and everyone I knew was reading for it my agent had to talk me into auditioning. Id heard of the original trilogy, but hadnt ever seen them. Now I have, and I understand why theyre films that people always reference, because with the landscapes and the costumes they look amazing, ahead of their time. The new film is an extension of that. I go to Burning Man festival every year and theres always a lot of Mad Max stuff going on but I didnt really understand it before. So when we started making the film it was nice to make that connection.
The indie darling: The Road Within
Its an independent film I made this summer with Dev Patel and Robbie Sheehan, a remake of a German film from a few years ago about an anorexic, a kid with Tourettes and one with OCD who steal a doctors car from a clinic and go on a road trip together.
Favourite films
The Party: Peter Sellers is a genius.
Midnight Cowboy: Dustin Hoffman is amazing in this, such authenticity and soul. It inspires me to keep working and hopefully one day I can bring that kind of strength to a role.
Reality Bites: Its just so enjoyable to watch, with so many classic lines.
Paris Is Burning: A fascinating documentary.
Anchorman: This always brings a smile to my face.
Cinematic wardrobe inspiration
Chicago: my favourite era for vintage clothing is definitely the Thirties. The understated glamour is super inspiring and the fringing and beading on all the costumes in this film is awesome. I love the sultry vibe of silk slip dresses worn beneath fur coats so sexy and casual at the same time. I love things that look worn and faded, items that have a story. I love to find out where amazing old pieces were from and who might have worn them.
Most loved Christmas films
I love watching Christmas films over the holidays. Theres something really comforting about going back to your family favourites each year. Mine are Its A Wonderful Life, Home Alone, A Christmas Story, Trading Places and the cartoon version of The Grinch.
