Worst (racist) bag shaming from a "BFF"

Thanks for your kind comments, regarding either my offended Asian lux habit (haha) or my friendship. It's great to hear other people's experiences and opinions, even from strangers. Makes me feel better again to be fortunate enough to buy bags! It really makes up the joy that slipped away last night about my bag collection. Thank you!

I actually find that most people-non asian- have this opinion, or feeling that all asians have luxury brand accessories, bags, etc. in fact, someone saw me at the mall getting out of my car and they didn't realize it was me and they told me they thought, "here we go, another asian with an expensive purse" they literally said that to me. i wasn't offended, but it did catch me off guard. most times i "forget" about my bags, or don't realize other people notice them. idk why people have this stereotype of asian people having luxury items. furthermore, I'm not sure why they care.

IMO, if she is your friend and you want to move passed this, i would let it go and just move on. but if you don't feel like your friendship can weather this, life is too short to have "friends" you can't be 100% yourself around.

Omg that's such a rude comment! Wtf! Pure stereotyping, minding other's business and and jealousy all in one sentence! Why does that someone even say it to you their stupid thoughts.

Some people don't have a "filter", and hurtful (even racist) things such as this come out of their mouths without a second thought. I've never gotten the "you like luxury goods because you're Asian" comment (I'm of Asian descent myself, just so you know), but after moving to the countryside from Paris, I get odd, intrusive remarks from the locals such as "WHY would you spend THAT much on a bag/wallet/piece of jewellery?" I never know how to answer. Dunno why it's suddenly their business how I spend my money.

In any case, don't let it get you down, it's just one way of seeing the world, and life is too short to obsess on negativity like that. I have plenty of European mates who are luxury enthusiasts, and some Asian friends who don't like luxury goods, so it's most certainly not just an "Asian Thing"!

H If any European ladies care to share with me your bag obsessions, I would be happy to hear if we are after all that different :D

I'm sorry to hear that, unfortunately I know exactly what you're going through.

But if you ever visit Sweden, I'd love to meet up and be your friend! :smile1: (I'm desperate for friends that knows BAGS  )

If you ever visit Switzerland come visit me [emoji173] none of my friends share my bag obsession either. Actually my best friend is the total opposite to me but she loves to look at my collection. It's wrong to have to justify to a bff what you spend your money on. As to the racist remarks I am speechless.

My fiancé is Swedish! He went to Stockholm last week for a business trip and came back to tell me that almost women he saw wore designer bags, unlike in Holland! Hahaha
My friends don't share a passion regarding bags, European or Asian.. My Asian friends always comment on the fact that they notice I've been buying a lot of new luxurious stuff lately, and my friends are mostly students so yeah... Not a lot of bag enthusiasts.
That being said I'm definitely desperate for friends who know BAGS and can afford a few nice ones themselves! No more "I would never spend that much on..."!!

No way, you live in Switzerland? Where? I'm going back in December! I used to live in Luzern and Zurich!! :smile1:

It's kinda sad how we justify our passion to people who don't understand, on top of the sadness that no friends share the hobby!
You're so sweet! I've been to Switzerland in 2010, quite a few cities and the titlis! It was so stunning. But things are so expensive haha

Thanks so much, I don't feel down anymore thanks to kind people like you who share similar experiences or opinions! Moving to the countryside from Paris must have been so different, especially the people around??

And truthfully I've enough of all of the Asian stereotyping (yeah dog eating jokes never get lost) i endure and the notion of recognizing me as a Chinese sometimes too much (why do I have to answer your HK and Tibet issues? Maybe I'm not into politics and don't even know more than you do? You like fengshui? Yeah good for you superstitious). Even my love for bags is labeled as being Asian now? Pffff tiring!

And on top of everything my friend is not even European to have said that European comment. She's Australian [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

What, you live in Holland? I have relatives near Nimwegen and just flew in to Amsterdam last weekend. I live in Berne but I'm American. Switzerland is great but you're right.. It's really expensive! Luckily instead of having to justify myself towards my family I have gotten quite a few people hooked on LV. Everyone thinks it's great that you can sell bags you don't want anymore. I'm sorry you had to experience what you did. It's just wrong. For those ethno who don't understand bags it seems like you spend alot of money but you can turn them back into money almost quicker than anything else. Maybe she was hoping you would give her a bag hahaha

Hahaha I gave her like 5 bags last night. They are not brand bags but very nice looking and great condition (I bought them before I got into designer handbags). I thought I couldn't sell them for more than a bottle of wine each and donating them seems a bit strange (I don't think our local refugees needs my clutches). If she hadn't said all those awful things I would have given her my Michael Kors bags that I know she likes a lot (she has one MK - influenced by me - and she was so happy)!!
Come and we will have a coffee next time you fly to holland :)) my fiancé is gotten into Louis Vuitton after I bought him some SLGs and is thinking about a Keepall DG for business trips - he hates carry-on suitcases!

Hah! I know that feeling a bit too well! I'm not even going to get into what kinds of strangeness I hear all the time from supposedly curious people: "oh, you're Japanese, can you tell me why your people kill dolphins?" "oh, you've lived in the States, do you eat at McDonalds every day?". Erm, wow, thanks guys for the stereotypes. :roflmfao:

I chalk it up to a lack of exposure to multicultural society, sheer ignorance, or a very poor sense of humour. Their loss.

Hahaha and my friends sometimes joke (or are serious?) when they realize that I have Japanese and Korean friends. They say sth like don't you guys all hate each other.... And one girl literally said yeah especially when you're from Nanjing! Pure ignorance or poor choice of humor.

In our global world there will be cultural exchange and people will make connections between cultures and behaviours. Eventually we won't be noticeably different from each other and the idea of 'race' will be largely gone. People will still make observations (true and false) based on what they see of culture though. Race is a false idea based on old ideas of genetics. I am completely European in appearance but I have Asian growth patterns in my teeth.

I am speechless. That is so unbelievably offensive. I do wonder sometimes if people like this have been raised by wolves.

But, there's good news...when we first met, my French boyfriend thought that my bags/clothes/jewellery were ridiculous and wasteful. He also had never had sushi or curry, and didn't have much interest in trying. Now, he's starting up a little collection of SLGs and watches, and drags me out to Japanese and Thai restaurants at any available opportunity. There's hope ;)
