Why Goldman Sachs Believes Coach's (COH) Turnaround Is Alienating Consumers

My local Macy's just dismantled the Coach counter and moved all the bags over to the side where the Dooney bags were (the Dooney bags are in a corner where all the Fossil and Tignanello bags were). In place of the Coach counter, there is now a Michael Kors shop with fancy lighting and shelves. The SA was gushing about it, and I was like "meh". They didn't have much of a selection of Coach at all. Nothing really caught my eye. Gee whiz...

Same with both my Macy's. I would say they cut back by at least half the amount of bags as well.

Right, he shouldn't be, but is he involved? Because it seems that as soon as he came on board, changes started to be made. It just makes one wonder.

Stuart was last at Loewe. He left Mulberry in 2007. He was very successful at Mulberry and at Loewe.

Mulberry's problems began with the hiring of Bruno Gillon in 2011 from Hermes. He was CEO at Mulberry who made the big changes trying to reposition the brand more upscale. He resigned in this past spring.

Ahhh, okay. Thanks!

Our flagship Hudson's Bay here in dwntwn Vancouver cut their Coach floor space in half. Now it's split with Marc by Marc Jacobs.

Lots of new Coach stock: all Rhyder bags, Crosby but I can tell you...nothing seems to be moving! And I was saddened to see how the Carlyle bags (olive triple turnlock & grommet) got marked down so fast! All the SS 2014 Borough bags got marked down too. I'm worried for Coach - I still like the brand.

Nordstrom at SCP used to carry Coach, now they carry very few.

Bloomingdale's and Macy's at SCP both have dedicated Coach sections.

Plus, the Coach boutique at SCP is a flagship store.

Things keep changing...

I agree, I haven't seen anything "sell-out".

I have a bag I bought a couple of weeks ago that I think I am going to return. I have a bad feeling that it's going to be 40%+ off during the winter clearance.

It's pretty much the same thing here. There are Carlyle bags in the clearance section.

Their turnover is lightening speed - no good. We don't get whopping 40% off up here right away. For Coach, it'll be 25% but there will be times when you can get an extra 15% or 20% off on top. Once in a while, there is 30% extra on sale items and in the old days, only "ugly" bags would make it to such a clearance but now? There are some very nice bags still un-sold but there's so much competition and women are pickier and pickier or fickle you might say.

I am also sad with the direction Coach is taking. I want a soft borough but there is no way in hell I would pay $468 or however much they are. The craftsmanship just does not justify the price. I loved their 65th anniversary bags from '06 and their legacy colored leather from a few years back. The new stuff is just not doing it for me. To be honest, some of their new stuff looks straight out MFF.

THIS! It does look very MFF! I too loved the Legacy leather done about two years or so ago as well as the 2006 to 2008 collections. I hope we see a return to those classics. Its getting very hard to find anything that I'd pay full price for these days, especially when its so easy to find sales...

I think that some of the stuff they had just before the Vevers collection came out looked very MFF, with the exception of the Brooklyn and the things with the studs and grommets. I absolutely hate the signature lining. There were styles from this time I remember seeing in the store but I don't remember anyone on tpf revealing. It almost seemed like they wanted those things to look bad so the Vevers stuff would look even better by comparison.

I think that most of the Vevers designs are nice but I'm hearing complaints about the quality of the leather, especially on the Rhyders. The pebbled leathers of the Dakotahs are getting better reviews, but I'm wondering if you don't need to use a really high quality leather to get a nice pebbled one. It seems like any blemishes would be hidden by the pebbling.

I think that the biggest mistake Coach has made has been raising the prices without improving the quality of the materials and construction. If you look back at the 2006 Legacy collection, and some others, the prices were pretty high but the bags were so detailed and the quality of the leather was so nice that they were worth it. I think they have accountants making too many decisions. They're trying to increase profits without considering any of the implications.

I went into the Coach store today and haven't been there in years. I was shocked to see it empty on a Saturday afternoon. That was in sharp contrast to the factory store at Ontario Mills were its always packed with people with bags all up both arms and a line snaking through the store.

I still like Coach and was happy to see the Rhyder bags and the Crosby bags in the store. They are very nice looking bags. I remember back when the Carly was popular that store was always full. Sad to see it like this these days.
