I think it depends on how your lifestyle is, my boyfriend asked me once this question why you spend so much on a bag? its just a Bag! well I replied to him why you spend so much on a car its just a CAR you will sit on it, drive it, who cares if you got a shiny sports car? :roflmfao: and that's where he stays silent and we never talked about it again. For me if its your money then you can spend it wisely theirs nothing wrong in splurging a bit, it keeps you sane.

You are soo right, People spend money on what they love car, house's, sports, vaca etc so it's just what people do to make their self happy:D!

I work hard, it makes me happy and I tend to keep/use them for quite a long time. I have tried to move away from too-trendy items to justify some of the cost. ☺

I would say the reason I paid over 1k for my past two bags (Gucci) was due to my father's education. He would love shopping in the finest retail stores so I followed suit. I went into Gucci and fell in love with their thick fine leathers. One of my bags, a grey one has taken on a gorgeous "aged" look and I love it more than the day I bought it. I recently wore it on a trip with my kids. The bag is now going on two years? I haven't received a compliment on it from strangers but another Gucci customer would recognize it in a nano second. It's a classic and the fact that it does not attract any attention, increases my love for it!

I really feel people must buy within their limits and try and not be swayed by what others are buying but what they can afford. This bag became affordable to me when it was reduced 30% at the boutique and I knew I would enjoy wearing it for many years.

I guess the bottom line answer to your question should be because one can afford it or has saved up for it. My definition of affording it is having the cash to just buy the bag on the spot. Whether it's a $1k+ bag or a $300+ bag it should be something the wearer loves and enjoys!

Quite interesting thread. I am relatively new to tPF and to be honest I don't recall how I came across it. I like nice things. Did not grow up monetarily lucrative but I was never in need or want of anything..well, that's not true. When you're a kid there's usually the influence of the latest thing that you see others with or on the Telly and your unknown senses are suddenly interested in something you've never seen before. Suddenly, you want that 'it' thing whatever it is.

I always had a fashion sense and my mum was great because she knows her way around a sewing machine. I have other siblings so things were handed down to me. I know how to be cheap and how to spend. I take no issue with preloved items, within reason, whether high end handbags or clothing. We used to call them used. The modern day term now is, vintage. Works for me. Consignment shops, great. That works too. Some people scorn preloved and that's their business. I am not of that caliber.

For me it comes down to this...I know what I like when I see it. As I said, I know how to spend and how to be cheap. I know how to put a high end piece with a low one and still look good and feel good. We can't take it with us. We can only leave it for others to use, enjoy and sometimes destroy if they're ungrateful and destructive. There's nothing wrong with looking good and spending your money on what you want. Life is a runway and you might as well work it!

I used to see that I earned it after working so hard but now as I grow older, it does seems a bit ridiculous. I still LOVE bags but now I try to source for great deals rather buy direct from shops. Also, I am more choosy for the brands. I used to just buy because it is branded etc. Now I am much more willing to buy an ex one only if it lasted me a lifetime.

So right, handbags make me happy and I change them weekly depending on how I look and feel. My husband never knows which one I'm carrying but I spend my money on nothing else so I think I'm entitled to a new or gently used handbag and I can switch them whenever I want!!

In the end, whatever we choose to buy, these rewards are little helps. And we tend to look for the best because it's like saying "you deserve the best, my dear" to ourselves.

I think this is important. We should use material goods (and not let them own us) to make ourselves feel BETTER. Sometimes buying a bag can be a reward form ourselves to ourselves or it can be a reminder that we are worthy of good quality things in our life.

I'm sure there are forums for guys who are into cars, electronics, knives, guns, girls, etc. I'd betcha a Balenciaga that they do not beat themselves up about their hobbies. And that's what they call them. Hobbies. They do not get all angst-ridden and beat themselves up. They do not see themselves as 'addicted' and 'crazy' or sick.

I"m not saying to be irresponsible, but I am saying that a lot of us are too hard on ourselves. There is a balance to all this, but seriously ladies, go easy on yourselves. Life is short.

Very true. It is no coincidence that fashion and beauty, something that is deemed feminine or suitable for women, is also considered to be frivolous and irrelevant in our society. Let's not forget that we live in a patriarchal and capitalistic society. We are made to crave and obsess over bags because of advertisements, made to feel guilty and then try to fix the guilt by buying more.

I live in a very status conscious area. I have concluded expensive bags will communicate success. An image of success perpetuates and furthers additional success. People want to work with winners. Luxury goods are a code to those who speak the language, but do not offend those who don't because they don't recognize them. I consider bags an investment in my brand.

....
The right bag is an expression of art. I love the sculptural and textural aspect of bags. I can look at them. I don't really see what I am wearing on my body other than hand bags. I am visually oriented and looking at beautiful things is the primary joy in my life.

I can really relate with this. At first I bought a bag to fit in and be treated better. I guess I accomplished this but then I realized the biggest reward was that I felt more confident, no matter who noticed my bag, when I walked down the street. I just loved looking down at my bag!

For me it's because I work my butt off, and I like nice things. I also really appreciate quality and workmanship. I look at a $300 bag and think, "Hmm...spending that $300 sets me back on getting a $1000 bag that I'm madly in love with."
I know it's ridiculous, and I know I need help, but I can't resist. There should be support groups for these kinds of things!

I can really relate to this right now! I just returned my $2k bag because it wasn't the right time to spend money. But now, as I'm trying to find a replacement bag, I'm having a hard time spending over $300 because that money could be going into saving for the bag I really want to [re]buy.

And also, I don't care what anyone says. I shop on sites where I don't even see the price of the bag (and don't read the designer name) and I can tell a difference between bags less than $200 and ones that are over $800. But the bags I find in the middle, Tory Burch or MJ bags, I can't allow myself to spend "so much" on a contemporary designer when a premium designer, whose bags look much better to me quality wise and design wise, cost "only" $1,200-$1,500 more and, I believe, will last me longer.
