I tried to write a reply to this thread about three times and then kept deleting. There are so many answers to this question, so I'll try to speak only for myself.

The way the economy is now, with investment funds bleeding left and right, I have more confidence that I can put $10K into an Hermes bag and have it still there 10 years from now at possibly the same price. In a divorce, I will get the handbag. In a pinch, I can sell the handbag, and in some cases, what I have purchased at retail can bring a premium.

In my case, I'm parking some funds.

Just my personal answer.

I have read a lot of disparaging remarks here about how people should not consider bags to be investments, which I generally agree with, but I do think Hermes is the exception. Hermes keeps such a strangle hold on supply which keeps their values up.

I think you are smart to think about a rainy day fund in case of divorce. One never knows when their spouse will go crazy on them. And you probably won't have to fight over the bags and what man can really make a case that the bags have appreciated rather than depreciated. Smart lady,

I agree that Hermes maintains its price regardless of time, but Chanel in my eyes are still the better investment, since it's increasing by 12-20% almost annually. Chanel stores do inform you of their price increases if you ask but I have never bought a designer bag that increase on value by more than 20% after one year!

I see my bag collection as a hobby...like collecting art. I know people who have put thousands of dollars into their Star Wars or old magazine collections...why not bags? I pretty much stick to Hermes, their bags are classic, practical, extremely durable, and come in insanely awesome colors. So my collection is not only beautiful, but functional as well.

Also, and this might be a bit creepy to some...I've made arrangements for my bags to be auctioned when I die to benefit a local animal rescue organization I'm involved with. So I figure the more I spend on bags the more $$ they'll raise in the end. Perhaps that eases my concience for spending as much as I do!

Good question - my boyfriend also thinks about the same question. I do not usually purchase handbags often. I also do not sell my handbags once they go out of style (for this reason I do not buy handbags that are too 'in' because I can see that they will be 'out' eventually). However, I see purchasing the quality handbags as adding something to the family's collection. I still use the Hermes folder for documents that my mom was using when she was at college to keep her music sheets. Same for other quality handbags. i just like how they are passed onto the next generations.

The other handbags represent some of my memory. The LV's red Epi was given by my grandma as my 20th birthday. I remember how I felt as a "grown-up" when I first had it in my hand. My mom and aunt bought a Loewe handbag when they went to Europe as a gift for my grandma. Now that my grandma has passed away, they gave it to me - each time I use it, I remember my family connection.

I personally do not think that the handbags need to be expensive, but I think we need to spend a good amount of money if we want the quality item we can passed onto the next generation.

Agree that it like collecting art. Don't think planning is creepy at all. You are obviously one of the many smart women drawn to TPF.

How lovely. Your post makes me feel all warm inside.

1.It's art on a bag.
2. They last a long time.
3. Personally, I seem to find more beautiful bags when they are more expensive. *Not saying that all expensive bags are pretty and all cheap bags are ugly*

Haven't found a reason for myself, vanity maybe.. What's yours? :woohoo:

Agreed. Not thousands on a bag, hundreds okay but I just don't make that much. LOL

I can watch the style change, seasons change and think, gee how much do I really want to spend knowing I will want to update my bag accessories as well in the future. I'm going to get a good bag, not a fake and its going to last. I'll keep it if I love it, sell it and invest in something new if its just so so.

Thoughts?

Thank you, I really appreciate that. It is also so true. I am just at the age where the only smart thing to do is believe in the sun, but keep an umbrella handy. You never know when one day's shiny present will someday be your rent. In fact, statistically, it may well be. I think I am probably at the peak of collecting. I have some health issues. I'd like to think that I have a plan just in case. One would involve giving a bag to either my daughters for graduation or to my son's intended upon his engagement, marriage, etc. For practical purposes these are all gifts purchased at "15 years ago" prices which I still don't think they will complain about. Even a car wouldn't hold up as well if I purchased it today. (And if they wanted to, they could sell a bag for a down payment on a car.)

As for Chanel, I love it !! I just decided that if I were going to go the "collector" route, I would actually choose and collect one designer that I love, and stick with it. So I watch Chanel from afar :)
