Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

Oh, I thought this was a funny story and thought of this forum. My husband's aunt was bragging about her trip to NYC while I was in Florida for Christmas. She had a very cute patchwork purse with big G's all over it. I thought it was a knockoff of Coach (somebody asked me what kind of purse it was....she was in the kitchen), but then thought it was a better knockoff of a Guess purse since the G's were so big. How about she came out of the kitchen and said 'now you know this is a Gucci...'. Funny thing is my real Gucci was on the couch too. Her sister said 'well you got a purse with G's on it...so how come you didn't know her purse was a Gucci'. My husband even laughed about it then and brought it up later. I guess she honestly didn't know...even looking at the obvious differences between my purse and hers.....
lmao

If people want a nice bag, W/O paying a ton of money, they could get a good, styish, looking bag at Target. And if they really want a designer bag, they could get coach or dooney bag @ Marshalls/ TJ Maxx. I saw one there for $40! That's probibly less than a fake.

It doesn't really matter what kind of bag you have. If I look good and put together, I'm confident.

What bothers me about fake bags, is people don't get them for the style, they get them b/c the logo is marked all over it, and they want people to think they have an authentic purse. They use it as an illusion, and they want people to think they have more than they do.

I'll admit that I bought a fake bag, I was in 5th grade and in love with the LV Cherry blossem; Like beyond in love. :love:I wanted one sooo bad. It was, of course unpractical for a 5th grader to get a real one, so (i even forget how) but we got a fake one for me. I used it a little bit, then got into authentic coach, dooney, and i've really expanded since.

Now, i would not buy a fake bag, but you have to remember in some situations people just do love the style, or it is unpractical for a real one.

I read an article in Harper's Bazaar once that you should only spend lots of money on shoes, bags and coats. Not other clothes because regardless of designer or price tag, they are not made specifically for you and won't always look right. Buy a cheap dress, pay a tailor to fit it to just you, and the $500 CLs will make the dress look like a million dollars. So rock whatever you're wearing

This is really old wisdom recycled for modern times! My Mom and Grandma taught me this when I was really, really young and I never forgot it. In fact I just reminded hubby about this just the other day! I personally add a great piece of jewelry to that list. For me, accessorizing is the only way to go! ;)

I'll never understand why people get so steamed up about fake bags. They'd do better to keep an eye on the morality of their own behaviour, outside of handbags. I'm far more concerned about counterfeit food products, especially after seeing a documentary in France last year about counterfeit food and drugs. A few days ago my husband picked up some 'counterfeit cheese' in a discount grocery store in Ireland. I don't know if people in US know a brand of cheese called 'Laughing Cow'. It's called 'La Vache Qui Rit' in France. Anyway, the packaging was so similar the cheese was obiously a knockoff but he didn't notice till I pointed it out and tasted the cheese (which was of course different from the original). But at least this fake cheese was probably safe as it came from a German supermarket and would have passed EU health and safety legislation. So I wonder how vigilant the EU really is about counterfeit products. This one was blatant.

Just for your information Laughing Cow is produced by the same company as La vache qui rit in the same factories, using the same receipe. Its essentially the same cheese with the name translated into the language of the country its being sold in ( and its being sold in 90 countries).

hmmmm, perhaps because this is a HANDBAG Forum, not a food forum, etc. . . .? LOL!

I get 'steamed' about parent issues on the parent forum I visit, etc. . . .
I am certainly not there trying to disuss handbags:idea:

My husband and I are going out for a New Year's Lunch today, it's also our anniversary. I'll be wearing a pair of jeans, a long-sleeved tshirt, UGGS and a hoodie. No logo. I think we'll drive in his Hyndai, since it's completely reliable and economical.

I will, however, carry my brand new Valentino Historie, which arrived yesterday. It matches the blue of my hoodie. We live in a rural community and this is acceptable attire any day of the week for a casual lunch out.

Paris can giggle all they want. I'll be comfy, warm and I KNOW I'm stylin' bigtime, even if I am a fool. :graucho:

This is my life. I wear uggs and jeans everyday that I am not at work and I love it. In the summer, it's flip flops. I have no shame in what I wear and don't really care what other people think when they see me :) I wear what I want for me not for others anyway! :woohoo:

I don't so much get steamed as don't comprehend why, after realizing it's illegal and theft, that others still think it's okay to buy and sell fakes. It truly puzzles me why folks want to participate in illegal commerce.

^or defend it :confused1:
WTH? LOL!

Yeah, during the course of this thread, several people have stated that even if they don't carry fakes they don't "judge" people who do. But why shouldn't we judge them?! After all, if we knew someone was a thief, we'd think them worthy of condemnation. Buying fakes is just one step removed, because you're buying from the thieves.

That said, as I mentioned when the person is quite young I'm more understanding, since they probably just don't know better.

I've been thinking about this a lot in the last 2 days. I think people who buy fakes (and could afford the real thing) do it because they honestly think they are getting a bargain, not realizing that they are just getting a cheap piece of crap. And they think they are putting something over on the rest of us. The ladies I've seen brag about their fakes seemed almost giddy.

It's ridiculous and egotistical to think that just by looking and judging one's appearance you know if their bag is real or not. It's laughable!

This fool wore a big Roots sweatshirt, Levis, ponytail and clogs today w/ her Louis Vuitton. HORRORS! LOL!

I totally agree with Swanky!

On Wednesday I was in a store and saw an impeccably dressed woman carrying a Louis Vuitton bag. From afar, her bag appeared real. When I got a closer look, it was obviously a fake (the "leather" was peeling, the logo was coming off, and the handles were fraying). On the other hand, I was dressed very casually in my typical mommy clothes (jeans, turtleneck, fleece zip-up sweatshirt, and tennis shoes) and carrying an authentic Prada bag.

I'm sure at first glance someone would assume I had a fake bag and the nicely dressed women had an authentic bag. You just can't judge from someone's appearance.
