Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

it should be embarrassing. . . I mean, how many people would buy a Hyundai and stick a Mercedes emblem on it? It's posing.

I know... which is why the people that carry fakes, but can afford the real thing, baffle me. I understand why people without the money want to pretend they're richer, even if I don't agree with it. But I was taken aback when my wealthy aunt said some of her friends carry fakes. Do they feel like they're getting a "deal" by buying a fake? How is slapping a pricey name on a PVC monstrosity a "deal?!" I mean come on!

That said, I'll be perfectly honest... I have a fake montblanc pen on my desk right this moment. My fiancee and I bought matching ones in Pisa from a street seller. We thought it was hilarious as the seller haggled like nuts and then gave us little figurines as thank you gifts.

They make fake Montblanc pens? I guess I'm not surprised but I never thought of it before. I guess if you make it and charge enough for it they will fake it.

Fakes are copying someone elses work, and thats wrong. I dont think anyone could argue that. Even before i was big on bags I would never buy a fake bag, I never saw the point..if I couldnt afford it then I would buy a nice guess purse or something. I also know that theres a lot of people who could never imagine spending more than $50 on a bag, yet they like louis vuitton so they buy a fake. There is always going to be people who want a designer bag but cant or wont spend the money on it, so they buy a fake, and their fine with that. I'd rather spend my time enjoying my bags and whatever else i happen to be doing , that to worry about every person i see with a fake bag (and thats just about everyone where i live)

When I was younger, I carried fakes. I guess I didn't know any better, and thought a 'name' made me better. Once I grew older and became educated and frugal, I realized a purse that I liked with or without a 'designer name' was good for ME. That said, I am not going to beat somebody up or belittle them because they carry a fake. Maybe when they learn better..they will do better or maybe not. I won't carry a fake, because I know I can go to TJ Maxx/Marshall's etc. and get a nice looking leather bag that is perfect for me. As a matter of fact, I have a Bebe bag (no wording because I HATE monograms and nameplates all over my stuff) that I get more compliments on than any pricey designer purse I own. That purse was about $500 (not sure why) regular price. I got it for less than $100. Designer purses or fake purses don't make you better than anybody.....buy what you can afford and what makes you happy!

Oh, and I feel the people on the clothing stuff. I'm a frugal accountant that prides myself on good deals. I have worn a $6.99 pin-striped dress from Ross with Gucci shoes. As long as you are pulled-together for you...doesn't matter what other folks think. Do you really CARE if other people think you are carrying a fake if YOU know better?

Oh, I thought this was a funny story and thought of this forum. My husband's aunt was bragging about her trip to NYC while I was in Florida for Christmas. She had a very cute patchwork purse with big G's all over it. I thought it was a knockoff of Coach (somebody asked me what kind of purse it was....she was in the kitchen), but then thought it was a better knockoff of a Guess purse since the G's were so big. How about she came out of the kitchen and said 'now you know this is a Gucci...'. Funny thing is my real Gucci was on the couch too. Her sister said 'well you got a purse with G's on it...so how come you didn't know her purse was a Gucci'. My husband even laughed about it then and brought it up later. I guess she honestly didn't know...even looking at the obvious differences between my purse and hers.....

True words, sister. I can't imagine why a judgmental stranger's opinion on my outfit or bag authenticity would matter.

I dress not to be naked. And I wear shoes not to be barefoot.
That's how much I care about clothes.
I also wear no makeup, other than lipstick and, sometimes, mascara.
And I do nothing with my hair other clamp it up.
My handbags, however, are authentic.
So there goes the theory about dressed like crap = fake bag.:D
haha that is me exactly !

hey ! I have a BMW and a Hyundai , while I have had numerous problems with my BMW I have had zero problems with my hyundai except I had to replace my front place for the first time in 5 years ! It has never left me stranded anywhere, where my BMW (both bought brand new) battery has died, window has been jammed opened and other problemes. Also my uncle who only buys Mercedes is selling his to buy that new high end hyundai Genesis and there is a huge waiting list for it. Hyundai has come a long way, I am proud to drive my Hyundai

I'll go ahead and chime in on the clothes thing too. I wear mostly inexpensive stuff - lots of basics from Old Navy and the Gap, and sometimes Target. Most of my dressier stuff is either midrange (Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein) or from mainstream chains like Ann Taylor. I almost always wear jeans and a tshirt or sweater with a casual coat, but my shoes and handbags are always designer. I honestly don't care if people judge me or the authenticity of my accessories based on my wardrobe, because to me that's just silly. I don't assume someone's bag is fake just because they're wearing less-expensive clothing.

This is me. I wear mostly stuff like Gap, some Target items, Ann Taylor, Dillard's, Banana Republic, etc. I own a couple of high-end designer clothing items, but for the most part, my clothing is inexpensive to mid-range. I also collect vintage clothing (1930s-1950s) so while the majority of my dressier coats are cashmere, they're also mostly 50 years old. Sunglasses and bags are another story. Sunglasses - I've got Coach & Versace. Bags - Coach, Dooney, Burberry, etc. I wear an expensive watch, have a nice wedding set, and I drive a nice vehicle. But I frequently leave the house wearing t-shirts and jeans. During August in Texas, I might even go out in shorts & flip flops, sans makeup! I think it is kind of silly and rude to assume one knows what another person can or cannot afford based on a 30-second wardrobe appraisal. I don't care what others think of my bags, because I carry them for *me* - not to impress some random stranger who might be behind me in line at Starbucks.

I'll admit I've owned fake bags, but I also purchased them thinking they were real, because I bought on ebay and didn't know any better. Counterfeit bags are wildly popular here (north Texas). Now that I'm older and know more about bags, what is bad about fakes, and how to look for an authentic bag (as well as how to find a good price on one!), I don't own any fakes and wouldn't purchase one. I will admit I have one bag that is basically a copy of a Birkin, but it isn't labeled to be a fake. It doesn't say Hermes or anything else on it, it was a style sold by a very reputable chain store here (Harold's - about equivalent with Banana Republic, I'd say) a couple of years ago. I bought it because I liked the style and I adore Birkins, although I'd never drop that kind of scratch on a bag. I didn't purchase it to make people think I was carrying an actual Birkin, and I'd never pass it off as such.

I think this article sums up a lot of the reasoning as far as why some people may choose to carry a fake bag, or wear a fake designer clothing/sunglass item (those are also hugely popular here):

I didn't say anything negative about Hyundai for the record though. . . and I'm assuming you don't put a BMW plaque on the front of it?
Then there's no posing there! LOL!
Surely my point was made about buying something less expensive and trying to make it something it's not to fool others{?}
